Mirror and Chest Projects

3.17.2010

A lot of you know I have been refreshing my bedroom for spring and summer. Just giving it a lighter feeling with lighter bed linens and accessories. I decided to paint my mirror that goes over my dresser and here are the pictures of that project. I will be linking to The Shabby Chic Cottage for Transformation Thursday and to
The DIY Showoff linky party. This is my first time joining the DIY  party.

This is the way it looked before I started. Just a nice brass colored solid wood frame with flowers on it.
I hope you can't see how messy my garage is.

Close up of the flower detail.

First coat of primer

I used this paint I found at Hobby Lobby for the base coat. Wasn't sure how I would like this, but I knew with glaze it would be toned way down. I put two coats of this color on.

I used renaissance brown glaze to enhance the detail on the mirror.
Did a lot of painting it on and taking it off to create this effect.

Here is a close up of the finished mirror.

Here is a larger view. The color came out just right.

I already had the primer so all this project cost me was fourteen dollars for the paint and glaze and I have plenty left if I have any more projects in the future.

This is the other project I worked on. This is the sideboard before.
and after.

I left the top dark and just painted the rest of it the same green as the chest in the foyer with a brown glaze. The steps to that can be seen HERE.
This sideboard is really old and that bottom drawer doesn't work real good and shows a gap.

Close up of the details.
Project cost for chest: 0 dollars.
I already had everything needed on hand.

I will also be linking to Miss Mustard Seed for Furniture Friday and Beyond the Picket Fence for under $100 linky party. Please be sure and visit each one of these blogs and be inspired as I have with everyone's great projects.

Thanks for all the great comments I have been receiving and please be sure and let me know what you think of these projects.

I will show the completed Springy bedroom very soon so stay tuned!

Y'all come back now,

KIM

  7. Another great job Kim, you sure have been keeping yourself busy!! The mirror turned out great and I love how your sideboard looks painted and how you left the top dark.I'm starting a little project too.I have a wooden clock in my kitchen which was given to me by my mother-in-law when we got married and she's no longer here with us so I don't want to replace it I just want to give it a "facelift". I'm going to paint it a sage green and distress it a little and then use a glaze. If I like how it turns out I'm on to bigger things like the armoire in my daughters room. Talk soon, Martina

  33. How would you feel about trading a massage for some decorative painting lessons? Only problem, one of us has to travel! I love this mirror and the sideboard. You always take a risk painting beautiful wood, but that sideboard looks great, and I love how you kept the top dark. I love the mirror too, and am glad you showed us steps. This is the sort of thing I was looking to gain at RMS, how to info from actual people. Great job, let me know if you want to come to Ohio!! ;)

  39. Kim-Your mirror turned out beautifully! I also love the sideboard--especially leaving the top natural. I understand about the gaps. I love antiques so none of our drawers slide well or shut correctly. I figure it's just "character" :)
