French Commode Makeover

7.20.2010

The theme this week at the CSI project is furniture so I am going to show the chest I refinished back in January.  We bought this French commode(chest) at an antique mall for only $200 a few years ago.
Some of you have seen this piece that I posted on when I first started blogging.

This is how it looked before.

I took all the drawers out and lightly sanded the piece. Then I painted on the two coats of
Georgian green paint by Benjamin Moore in a semi gloss finish.

I then sanded some of the edges and places on top down to the original finish to distress it.

I used Valspar Mocha glaze from Lowe's to glaze it.

This is after I started glazing and rubbing some of it back off.

The end of it shows the glazing better.

Then I did the same process on the drawers. I made sure I got the glaze in the crevices so they would be
highlighted. For the last step I used a paste finishing wax instead of a urethane.

This is how it looked in the end. This was my very first time refinishing a piece of furniture and I
love how it turned out. Mr. Savvy was quite impressed.

Now it resides in our bedroom. I just love it here.

  36. It's beautiful, Kim!

Our handmade furniture we ordered was delivered yesterday. The guy who made it brought it out to the condo, so we got to visit with him awhile. Anyhoo....he finished the pieces with a wax also. I like that idea and will used it on our next project.

  43. i cannot believe this was your first time doing this!!! you did an amazing job. it looks like a professional finish! and i always use paste wax- it feels so much nicer and isn't shiny like poly. i only use poly if i want it to be a little shiny, or if it's a dining table or some other high traffic piece.
