Casual Family Dinner

11.04.2010

I love when the weather starts getting that chill in the air. Not cold, just a chill. The fall weather has been beautiful here lately and now this week it is getting windy and colder. That makes me want to cook foods that warm you up inside.  I don't like to cook that much, but something about this weather puts me back in the mood to cook and bake.

Nothing better than tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.

So I made a big pot of home made fire roasted tomato and basil soup and some grilled cheese sandwiches.

I was thrilled when I found these plates at Home Goods last week and only $3.99 a piece.
I have been wanting some of these ever since I saw Pat at Back Porch Musings use a set.

I used my yellow bowls that I previously bought at Home Goods set atop my white everyday plates from Mikasa.

The red and white checked place mats were purchased from JCP.com and were on clearance.

The napkins were purchased at Home Goods, too. Squirrel napkin rings from PB.

Have to have big spoons for soup. These are Mikasa Classico Satin.

Crystal goblets from World Imports.

I put together this fall arrangement and put it at one end of the table so conversation would not be blocked.

I used pincones to cover up this side of the mum since it was not growing uniformly and the pot was showing.

Birch candle added to this SLAH lantern that I painted black a while back.

Bread basket used for crackers. I knew Mr. Savvy had to have his crackers with his soup.

I served the soup in my tureen.

I love tomato soup.

I invited my daughter, son in law, and grandbaby Leila over.
 Good food enjoyed with family.

  1. Good Morning! This is so pretty! I was thinking of doing soup last night too for the same reasons, but did'nt. Cold and rainy here also, perfect soup weather, maybe tonight after seeing this. I love everything about this setting. I love your yellow bowls with the black plates. The checked placemats look so good at your table. I also really like your flatware, but your adorable squirrel napkins rings are my favorite. Such an inviting table!

  13. There is so much to love about your casual table Kim. First of all, I love how you mixed the gingham, transferware and yellow bowls together. And that you used real flowers for the centerpiece! And that you served tomato soup and grilled cheese (my fave) and that you had your daughter and family over! They must have appreciated sitting there basking in the love and comfort food. Perfect for a sleepless mom and dad! There is nothing like tomato soup to comfort the soul. We discovered tomato and bread soup in Florence. I can't wait to make it. Maybe I'll copy you and have daughter and family over for dinner! They could use some comfort right now. Their babies don't sleep! xo Delores

I'm making Autumn Bisque soup today. Now, if only I had a soup toureen to serve it in. I think I'll need to add that to my list of wants =)
