Floral, Gingham, and Matelasse

1.13.2011

I still have a few more projects to work on before I can reveal the guest room I'm working on.
I thought I would share how I made this bed up to make it big and fluffy and ready to
snuggle up in while it is cold outside. I have had a couple of readers ask me to share how I
achieve the look of my beds.

This mattress is not a very good one so I have a way of helping that.
With this room being used very little we just didn't put a lot of money into the mattress.

First I added this covered foam pad just for an extra layer of softness.

Then I placed this big fluffy feather bed on top.
Now we are ready to make the bed.

First I used the green gingham fitted sheet.

I put the green gingham top sheet on and then a second top sheet  in this floral pattern.

as you can see I put it on top side down so that when I fold it back the top side shows

then I added the matelasse cover and pulled the top sheet over it.

Next are the euro shams. These are a beige silk/velvet blend from Pottery Barn.
I have had all this bedding for years.

Then two sets of standard pillows in front of the Euro shams in the green gingham and floral
patterns.

Next are the throw pillows. I had this one from Home Goods and it is the perfect color.

I love this needlepoint pillow that matches the floral sheets. This adds some more texture.

Then this wonderful duvet is folded back at the end of the bed.

Now we have a big fluffy begging to be jumped into bed.

My master bedroom was green for many years and I used this floral duvet and sheets.
This is the Grovsenor Square line by Ralph Lauren. This bedding was too expensive in the
department stores so I was lucky to find it on ebay at a much lower price. I bought pieces over
time. The needlepoint pillow sold for $150 in the stores, but I lucked up and got one for $45 and another one for $25. The green gingham sheets were my recent find at Home Goods and they
are Ralph Lauren, too. I have many more pieces that go with the Grovesenor Square line, but I would need a darker bed skirt to use the heavy wool blanket and shams I have. Maybe next year
I will get a dark bed skirt and try that look, too.
I am not saying my way is the right way. This is just how I achieve this look.

Now I have more pieces to finish in this room and then I will share the whole look.

Have a great weekend and stay warm.

KIM

  1. Kim this looks like a bed I would love to take a long winters nap in!! Just so cozy looking. This goes to show that the Demise of the Duvet is not happening in blogland. You can tell by reading the comments on my post as well. I think we all love a comfy and poufy bed to sleep in. Yours is a perfect example of that, xo Kathysue

  6. That big feather bed part of it looks wonderful (and warm). When I worked in hotels we used two top sheets also, but with the blankie wedged between them. They called it triple sheeting the bed. Basically it was so the guests didn't have to touch the blanket at all (since it didn't get washed daily). I think nowdays most of the better hotels wash all the bed stuff every day though (thank you!!!). I'll have to try to find one of those feather beds for my bed.

I'm so glad that I found your blog again...I lost my list of blogs that I was following, it kept saying that I wasn't following any blogs even though I knew I was. I never could figure out how to get it back...so I had to try to remember everyone that was on my list. I'm sure that I'm still missing some. Going to take some time to read posts that I've missed.

I was thinking of getting the feather topper for our bed. Our temperpedic isn't as thick as the sheets now days so I thought that would help keep the sheets tight and also be comfy!!

  54. Kim, I love it! I actually make my bed the same way, and leave my comforter folded at the end. I just love how it looks that way, and my mom showed me how to turn the sheets over so the pretty side shows when folded down. Such pretty colors, my master bedroom is similar, as florals are my very fav. Well done my dear. Beautiful muted vintage looks, with pops of red, my very fave! xoxo tami

  62. Hi Kim~ This is such a beautiful bedroom- the bed looks so cozy and comfortable - I am just wanting to climb in!!! I used to have a feather bed... it was amazing!! I am thinking maybe I ought to find one again!!
As far as the design books go- French Chic is a decorating and lifestyle book- lots of tips, some recipes, etc. and such a beautiful house!!! At Home was a major surprise find. I love this one, as well as Carolyn Westbrook!I usually like to look through books before I order them to make sure I like them enough to buy ~ I actually found French Chic at Home Goods-but it was wrapped up! If you decide to purchase any, hope you love them! Thanks for sharing at my party this week!

  69. Hi Kim! How funny that just yesterday I posted about 'layering' the window treatments and now you're 'layering' the bed! I can't sleep without a layer of foam on my mattress... I can't imagine how heavenly the down featherbed on top of that must be! I might never get out of bed! I love the new look for your header - new year new header!!!

  72. I love the way you put beds together. They really do look so inviting. Those color combos are so great! I'm doing a bit of catch-up here, but had to comment on the wall color. Perfect. I'm a green lovin' person, too. It's kind of one of the new neutrals, because you can take it so many different directions. Stay warm!

  75. This is such a fabulous post...I am always looking at magazines and catalogs, trying to figure out why the bed looks so perfect! I love the patterns that you have mixed and the layering of the pillows. The duvet looks beautiful at the end of the bed and sure beats fighting it to spread it over the whole bed {that is my big problem with duvets...keeping the comforter inside from bunching up. Any tips on that?}.

    Thanks so much, Kim!

  85. Kim, your beds really do look beautiful, and they just beckon a tired person to lie down and get snuggly! Did you know that girls used to be taught to put top sheets on upside down so that the pretty part of the sheet would show when it is folded back? It is a lovely look!

A question for you: where do you get your featherbeds? Do you have one on your master bed?

I'm going to try and replicate your bed. I'll let you know how it goes. :o) It might be a while so don't lose sleep waiting on me! Hope your Sunday is great...by the way~I really love your dining room. I'm going to order some monogrammed pillows for my chairs because I love the look. Thanks so much~Ann
