The Look for Less

1.08.2011

Have you seen the new Pottery Barn catalog? Yum. I love getting a new one just for some inspiration. PB is a great source for ideas that you can duplicate on a much cheaper scale or you can wait for a sale. I have a lot of Pottery Barn pillow covers and bed linens, but they were all bought on sale or off ebay. Ebay is another great place to find discounted PB items.

When I received the new catalog I was flipping through it and noticed they are selling this scrumptious chandelier that I could have used in the sitting room, but that's o.k. I like the one I got.

I would have had to pay shipping for this one though. The shipping on the one I got was free.
I love this chandy though. O.k. that is off subject, here.

Pottery Barn is selling these book bundles for the  price of $39 which is absurd! Come on people. Just go to the thrift store and buy some books for fifty cents to a dollar apiece rip the covers off, buy some twine at the craft store or Walmart and tie it around them.

Stick them in a wooden bowl and voila. I did this a couple of months ago and now PB is selling their little bundles and making a whopping profit. Such an easy project for around $5.
The PB book bundles are catalog/internet only so shipping fees apply, too.
If you want to see how I made these click here.

The prices on these found demijohns are a bit over priced, too at $99 to $279. Go to a flea market or antique barn and see if you can find them at a better price. Also check out ebay for these, too. I know some cost more than others. I got my largest one at an antique place in Asheville, NC for $65. Just hunt around if you want these.

The large one on the left was just $65. I only paid $10 for the smaller one.

I saw bottles like these at the thrift store for $5, but didn't need them. On sale for $49 at PB
and catalog/internet only. That means shipping, too.

This bust is $129!

This is mine. A different style bust, but it was only $10.

So look around and see if you can't find the look for less. Enjoy the thrill of the hunt and use your hard earned money for things like groceries and the bills.

Thanks for all the sweet comments regarding my new header.

Enjoy your weekend! We are under a winter storm watch for Sunday to Tuesday. Yay!
I thought I was in the south?

KIM

  2. It is so fun to stumble across things as you hunt around. I love finding "stuff" for great prices. Leaves more $$ to buy more "stuff". I may need to start selling some too.

  4. It is crazy to spend those prices. I can't afford to, and even if I could I would not, look at all the inspiration we can create on our own dimes!

  8. Thanks for the tips Kim...you know I'm all about thrifty ideas...I always love getting ideas from PB and Ballards. Not very happy about this winter storm...looks like it will keep Mr.CC and I from going to Auburn on Monday to watch our TIGERS play...I'm very SAD:( Please say a little prayer that the power will not go out in Auburn and our students (this will include my Mary Claire) from watching the game.

    Blessings,
    Linda

  12. Would you believe I don't have a pottery barn catalog. I think I will go on over there and order one for inspiration now. I must have gotten bumped off the mailing list for not ordering. I've gotten the Ballards ones and the Crate and Barrel ones for years and found much inspiration from them as well. I always look for bargains substitutes too. Great post. Hope you come on over and join my new blog. I love your new header too! It looks great and that was so nice of your friend to do that for you. Don't worry I don't think anyone will be confused whether they are at your blog or not! :))

  15. I definitely agree Kim, this is what I have done for years, cruise the expensive catalogs and then replicate. There was a time that this was not the way to be, you were only in if you could "afford" the "real"? Now however, it is the "new" thing to do again, I am doing the happy dance :) Create, imagine and redo, yeah.

  16. As soon as I saw those books in the new PB catalog the other day, I thought of yours, Kim! I love the eye candy they provide. Their catalog is about as good as a decorating magazine. But I've rarely purchased. I have gone to the one in Dallas and bought some things though.

  26. No Pottery Barn up here, but it looks like they carry beautiful things - but if one can do it without the high price and shipping, then all the better!

  27. I love to look at their catalog, but I havn't ever ordered anything from them. I love going to the thrift store and see what I can find, so much fun. You have some wonderful examples of duplicating their look and yours are even prettier. Stay in and stay warm. Hugs, Marty

  31. I got my catalog today too but haven't gotten a chance to look at it yet. I like how you have made almost the same thing a lot cheaper.

  32. Well, now that you have highlighted a few of the PB finds...I won't have to be so thorough searching through mine...which just came today, by the way. Thanks for spoiling my fun....hahaha.

It is amazing what they can charge for some things, isn't it? AND that there are people out there that will pay $39 for some books with the covers ripped off...lol...wouldn't it be funny if they all came from a closed down adult book store? Just a thought~

Have a great evening...Nice post today- Hugs- Diana

  33. Kim, since you are in my area have you been to the PB Outlet in Dawsonville, Ga. at the Tangier Outlets on Georgia 400? That is where I buy any PB stuff that I own. You are one hundred percent right about those horrid prices. ♥O

  34. One of the main reasons I sign up for catalogs is to get ideas...then I run to the thrift store or hit the estate/yard sales!

We're under the same winter storm warning...praying for a lot of snow...but safety for those that have to be out in it!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love getting PB and Ballard Designs. Both give me tons of ideas. I am with you about shopping on Ebay. Great finds for much less money. We are under that watch, too. Georgia weather........just never know these days, huh? My children are so excited!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh wow! Yes, you are going to get a lot, too. We are about an hour and a half north of Atl. Can't wait to seesome real snow!

  37. Like the new look! I am glad you kept the doggie in the header! I love him! We are slated for snow Monday night and into Tuesday and the weatherman said it was coming from the south. So we'll be getting yours soon. (I am in Va).

  38. Hi Kim, I love your new header! I also love to look at PB for inspiration and then either make it or find it cheaper. I do shop there but normally only when they are having a good sale. I just got two lanterns that were 70% off from PB. Wahoo!
    Hugs,

  39. Thanks for all these wonderful ideas. I liked the book bundles when you did the tutorial on it a few months ago. I think I might be ready to try that. I do have that big empty wooden bowl on my dining room table. Hmmm?

  41. Love the new blog header, Kim! I can't believe they are selling books with covers ripped off for $39.00! You are right ~ you can just go to Goodwill or any thrift store and buy some for much less and do it yourself.

  42. Awesome deals! I just went treasure hunting at my local thrift stores and scored a Waterford crystal clock for $2.49! Unbelievable!

  43. I thought I was in the south too. We might get snow again tomorrow! I told Gary that we could have just stayed in Cincy! LOL!

  45. Hi Kim
We are home from the lake and I am doing some catching up this morning.

When we picked up the mail yesterday, that PB catalog was in the batch. I am seriously considering ordering the chandy for the dining room. I love PB catalogs. Better than a lot of magazines offered.

  47. Great ideas, Kim. It is so smart to get INSPIRATION from catalogs then go and do it for LE$$:):)

  48. I agree that PB is great for ideas but really overpriced. I can only buy something there when it is on clearance...Christine
