My Other Kids

1.23.2011

Is it o.k. to be early for a party? I hope so. Debbie is throwing a party for our pets and Bailey
and Rusty are ready to join in the fun.

Some history:
I have always had cats growing up as pets. Had dogs that stayed outside, but were not ever inside. Then my daughter got her yorkie and I kept her for several days when she and her husband went on vacation. Well, I was smitten and wanted my own yorkie and went and got Bailey from a breeder that was more like a puppy mill. This breeder had about six different breeds she was selling and not in the best conditions either. I feel like I rescued Bailey. We are still not sure if she is a yorkie or a silkie, but even her vet believes she is probably a silkie. We love her no matter what breed she is.
Rusty was given to me the year before we built our house and he was always quite over weight and now in his old age he is skin and bones. Not sure how much longer he will be with us since cats have nine lives.

Oh, how sweet. Not! That does not last but for a second. Then they are fighting.

This happened back in the fall and I grabbed my camera since this is rare. This is normally where
Bailey lies and looks out. I was surprised to see Rusty up there, too.

This is when Bailey posed for the header shot.

This is her favorite toy. It is a plastic foot from Pet Smart and eventually she will tear the big
toe off from playing tug of war with it. I have another one ready when this one gets torn up. She has
probably had five of these. They are only two dollars though.

This was her first and last time to play in the pond. It took me over an hour to get all the
crud out of her hair.

This is what I normally see when I am trying to blog.

This is her other favorite spot, but she only gets up there when her daddy is sitting in the chair.

Bailey is ready for spring!

Now she is tired. Say good night, Bailey.

While I have all you pet lovers here I have a question about pet insurance. We have a policy with Pet Plan and they have increased
our premium by $100 a year so I am hunting for a new policy. My mom has VPI and was wondering
if any of you have pet insurance that you have been pleased with? Boy, pets are expensive.

Joining the pet party at Debbiedoos.
Come join in the fun.

KIM

Thanks so much for all the comments about bhg.com using that photo in their holiday series
this year. I will let you know when it goes live. That is a long way off.

  1. I am going to have a ball at this party. Bailey and Rusty, well they are just way too cute. It ought to be interesting because my Mom has a cat too, and her dog is coming tomorrow, hopefully. Long story short, the cat has taken over Beatrice's new crate, so my Mom had to go get another one. I enjoyed every picture, they just are adorable!

  2. Ohh they are such cuties. Don't know anything about pet insurance, but do know pets can be expensive. Lori

  3. Both of them are such cuties! Our Bassets have VPI insurance. I do feel it is totally worth it. It is around $25-30 a month for each but covers annual shots and heartworm. They have two plans to choose from. When filing claims, you just have to have a list of their diagnosis codes. It has not been hard and they send reimbursements within 2 weeks typically. Highly recommend.

  4. Hi Kim,
Bailey and Rusty are such cuties!! I would agree that Bailey looks more like a Silky, but it's really hard to say. In Canada, we have Pet Plan Insurance and Vet Insurance as our two main providers. Vet insurance is very good too. I did a quick search, and you can also get it in the us:
    http://www.vetinsurance.com/
I haven't heard of one person yet who was dissapointed in them. Good luck!

  5. They both are cuties. I have a Yorkie. I really have never figured out the difference between a Yorkie and a Silkie.

  6. Your pets are so cute Kim ~ pets are the greatest and I think, truly make a home complete! I too have always had cats and have two now (BTW, all of my cats have lived to be 15 - 20 years old)! Over Christmas, we rescued a terrier mix from the Humane Society. She is an inside dog and with a little adjusting period, has adapted very well to our life and household. Love her and our other two 4 legged ones! Now, pet insurance, I would sure like to know more about it and am curious to see what people post here. Thanks, great post and pictures! Tammy

  10. Love your Bailey - I'de say she is a Silky. Could be a cross between the two. Our Bailey is a mix from a mill (ugh) -she's a westie poodle mix.

The photo where they are lying together, you can almost feel their emotion- "this is my spot, when are you getting OFF of it".

  12. Hi Kim-

What cute other kids you have. I grew up with cats and never had a dog until I married my husband - they came aa a pair - he and Woody a mutt. Woody is long gone and now we have Schnitzel. My daughter brought a cat home when she graduated from college so he, Trax kind of became ours. Now she is in Africa with the Peace Corps and has a puppy that she will be bringing home in a little over a year. They all make our house a home.
    My best- Diane

  17. Both are so adorable. Such great photos, too.
Does Bailey stay in the crate all night? I want another dog but our current house doesn't have a room we can block off at night. So I was wondering if people crated the smaller breeds at night and if they did well.

  25. Bailey is just gorgeous and I am so glad you rescued him...How cute to capture those rare moments with him and rusty...

We hope to adopted another dog once we have the fencing to do so...Our current "middle child" is Nadia our 11yr old lab/chow (we rescued her when she was about a yr old after she was dumped)Now she is just too old and lazy to wander far...Plus she has lived here for 6yrs with no fences and seems to understand she is required to say with in the confines of the 60 acres..tough life for a doggie huh lol.

What a cutie pie! My daughter has a rescue Yorkie/questionalbe heritage. When Angela and her husband are out of town GaGa (that would be me 'cause I'm GaGa over Ellie) gets to go stay at her house and take care of her.

  45. Hi Kim, Bailey and Rusty are so adorable. Your story sounds alot like mine with Isabella. She just turned a year old in November, so her fur is just now getting past the baby hair, at least that is what the groomer said? I just love Bailey's hair, how much care does that take to keep it that long? Our yorkies alwasy do want our attention though, don't they?
I hope to join your meme soon. I think I am getting the hand of it, slowly.
    Thanks for sharing!

  46. Oh what cuties. Love your photos! Thanks also for your words on Joey, I really appreciate that a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Chrissy, I brush her daily and right now she is getting a bath twice a week with a medicated shampoo from the vet for a skin condition that he thinks may have been caused by fleas. Not so sure on that one. Anyway her skin has cleared up after taking antibiotics for a month plus the shampoo. She gets groomed about every six weeks. Sometimes I want to cut her hair, but I love the way it looks. Thanks so much.

  53. Love the pictures of Bailey. My first "baby" was a Yorkie named Delta. She was so precious. Now we have three furry babies named Bentley, Clarabel, and Presley. They are so much fun and bring such joy!

  54. Bailey with the foot in her mouth is hysterical! That little one definitely has personality ... I love the pic when they are laying beside each other ... if they are anything like my McDuff, every once in a while they are giving each other a little kick trying to get the other one out of "their" spot!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Bailey and Rusty are both just precious! Something about sweet Bailey and that severed foot just don't "go" together, tho! :0) Too funny that that is the favorite toy!

I just love animal shoots, don't you?!?!
