Hard to Say Goodbye

4.10.2011

I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was filled with highs and lows. We were able to go to Gatlinburg, Tennessee to meet my son, daughter in law and the grand girls. We hadn't seen them since Christmas. It was so good to be able to hold those girls again. They are changing so quickly.

My son's in laws are in town from Italy so my son decided to rent a cabin in Pigeon Forge for the weekend so he could show them around.  We decided to drive up and meet them there so we could see the girls and the in laws. We have been with his in laws several times before, including there home in Italy, but it had been a while.

This was the good part of the weekend. The bad part was my cat Rusty passed away. I knew it was going to be anytime, but it certainly did not make it any easier. He has been part of our family for seventeen years.

Here are just a few photos I have of him on my computer. I tried to scan some of his kitten pictures and cannot figure out how to use them in my blog post. They are in my HP photosmart, but I don't have a clue how to get them to a place where I can use them.  So here are just a few that I have. I am sure Bailey is going to miss her friend, too.

Rusty was given to me on Mother's day in May of 1994. I am not positive of his birth date except it was probably in March of 1994 since he was around six weeks old when I got him.

Rusty was such a good cat. He sure put up with a lot from Bailey when she moved in on his territory.
They ended up getting along real good together though. This photo was taken around November 2010. His health had slowly declined since then.

Goodbye sweet boy! You will be missed.

This is certainly the hardest post I have had to write. I have cried on and off all weekend.  It is so hard to say goodbye. I have lost many pets and it just never gets any easier.

Thanks for all the kind comments on my mini home tour post this weekend. You helped to brighten my weekend!

Hope you have a good week and I am sure mine will get better as time heals.

KIM

  11. It is so hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet, believe me I know. At one time I had four delightful cats and through the years they have passed on. I'm down to one little blind kitty now but she is pretty old. Heart felt thoughts go out to you.

  16. So sorry for your loss!I am sending you this special poem to help your time of grief.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

  19. I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your sweet cat. I just bought a circa 1921 book today called "Buff: A Collie." Here is an excerpt: "I wonder if it's heretical to believe that when at my tired feet shall tread the other shore, a madly welcoming swirl of exultant collies will bound forward, circling and barking around me, lead me to Home!" Like the author, I believe we will see our beloved furry friends again. Hugs to you...

  24. Kim- I am so sorry about your kitty. I know the heartache. I have lost cats over the years but for some reason the last one I lost hit me the worst. I was more attached to her than the others maybe? I don't know. My heart is heavy for you and I know that it will be along time before you really heal from the loss. It's amazing, isn't it, what a big part our pets play in our lives. I have not got another cat because I don't think I could go through losing another one. Hugs to you- Diana

  27. So sorry to hear of Rusty's loss. My heart breaks for you because I know how hard it is to lose a pet. I had a cat named Junior (also an orange colored kitty) who lived to be 20 years old! He had six toes on each paw so he always looked like he was wearing fluffy slippers. He was the sweetest kitty and I miss him so much. I think that is part of the reason we don't have any pets right now - it can be so heartbreaking to lose them! But if you look back over the years, you can be grateful for all the happiness you experienced and realize it was all worth it!

  30. Oh, I'm so sorry that you lost Rusty this weekend! I'm sure that was so hard to finally accept. I know you've been sort of expecting it. At least now, you can look back and know what a long good life he had and even a close furry friend was given to him in his final years. It's so unfortunate that our pets don't live as long as we do!

  115. Oh Kim, I am so sorry. Yes it is incredibly hard they are such a big part of your life and leave such an incredibly big hole.
Our Maggie is still hanging in there but she has lost her bounce and spends a lot of time sleeping, the vet says we've already had her 3 months longer than he expected so I guess every day is a bonus for us.
My tears are for you and for me xoxo

  118. I'm a little late in posting but want to give you my sympathy. I had our cat, Sparkle, for 19 years and after that long, they are definitely part of the family. Good memories are what you can focus on and that you have Bailey.

Sounds like a good time with your son's family. Those kids grow up so fast! I'm sure you will have some pictures to share!

  121. Kim, I am so, so sorry to hear about Rusty. I have felt that pain too, and there is just no way to get around it unfortunately. They become our children so to speak. When I lost my Yorkie, Lily, I was beside myself with grief, and she was only 7. I have a beautiful 2-1/2 year old Bichon now, and sometimes I think maybe I shouldn't have gotten another pet, because it will for certain happen again. Their lives are just so short. But then, I love her so much, I can't imagine being without her. She brings me such great joy. I hope your pain is short, and at least you have Bailey to hold and love and hug. Hopefully that will help reduce some of the sorrow.

  126. I am so very sorry that you must endure the loss of your friend, companion and family member. There is no pain like the loss of an innocent. You loved him. He knew that. He is part of you.
You are a good person, my friend. You will be in my prayers.

  127. I am so very sorry. We are preparing for the same thing here and I've already been crying. Our almost 15-year-old beagle has changed drastically in the past couple of weeks. The vet seems to think old age has caught up with her and she is not going to be with us much longer. I think that after our kids leave the nest, the pets take on the "job" of being our children. They are certainly a very loved part of our families and losing them is hard, very hard. Sending a big hug your way.

  133. Oh Kim...I am so sorry I missed this post. I can only sit for a few minutes at a time so my blog reading has been seriously cut down. I know the pain of losing a pet. It is just heartbreaking. Honestly this might sound weird but I almost cried harder when I lost my dog that I did when my Mom passed away. Only because he was with me every day and my Mom lived 5 hours away. It was that emptiness of coming home to a quiet house with no greeting....I hope you are feeling better.
