Bye Bye Birdies

7.08.2011

Bye bye to the birdies on this little chest and hello to a new big bird print. I have been a painting fool for the last couple of weeks. Mr. Savvy comes in and just rolls his eyes. The first piece I painted is in the nautical guest room, but I will share that another time.
I want to share something different today. After changing the colors in my bedroom to mostly brown, cream, white, and pale blue the red hutch sitting in the little hallway outside our bedroom just was not working for me. Yes, it was fine there with all the red in the two rooms on either side of that hall, but from my bedroom it clashed badly.  So changes had to be made. Out came the chalk paint and waxes.

This is an old picture of the victim chest since I didn't take a new one before I started painting. When I get something on my mind to do I just start and don't stop. The birds were fine for a while, but I envisioned something better. This was just a cheap chest from Home Goods to use for towels and toiletries when it was in the bathroom. Now it holds books and toys for the grands.

This is how it looks now. This chest fits better in this hallway and doesn't take up so much room like the hutch did. If this picture looks wompy it is because I had to take it from my bedroom door and the door frame is cutting it off on the right side.

Like my new big bird picture? I got it at a local store that was having a moving sale and I scored this for $35. First I put it in the powder room, but moved it to here when I started moving pieces of furniture around. You know how one thing moves and it starts the domino effect. Always happening here.

Now for some shots of the paint job I did to this piece. I used Annie Sloan chalk paints of course. This stuff goes forever and I can't seem to use it up.

This bird is so ugly that he's cute.

I love how this little hallway looks now with just a few simple changes and the only new piece is the bird picture.

I used Annie Sloan Old White chalk paint all over and then I mixed two tablespoons each of Old White and Old Violet for the insets. Then it was glazed all over with clear and dark waxes, sanded and buffed.

Thanks so much to all of you who have voted for my granddaughter, Leila. We would appreciate every vote we can get daily through July. You can vote by clicking on the pic at the top of my side bar.

Hope you have a great weekend! We will be going to see the other grand girls in Nashville.

  4. It looks very nice in your hallway! You did a great job painting it! How many pieces have you done with the Anne Sloan's and do you do anything that will make it last longer?

  5. Hi Kim,
I posted about my manic paint brush and I see that you are doing the same. I really like the cabinet. I have one with rabbits painted on it and it's getting ready to be renewed!

Love the way you decorated it too. The bird pic is perfect.

  42. I cannot paint birds or trees or anything that remotely looks like the item that is being painted, so I couldn't have painted over the birds on the console, especially if I had painted them and they looked as good as yours! But I do love the new look of the piece, too!
I love that you are adventurous and not scared to try new things!
    That inspires me!
HUGS and blessings--off to vote for Leila again :)
