A Change of Color

Sister's Dining Room Makeover

My sister has decided to lighten things up at her house like I and many others have.

She has had this red dining room for many years and decided to go more neutral.

I love the new colors she chose. She used Benjamin Moore Decatur Buff above the chair rail and Linen White below. Such a beautiful golden glow in here now.

Of course with the new wall color came some changes in the accessories, too. If you will notice in the first picture she had used clear lamp bases and the brown shades had no monogram on them.

She changed the bases to these ivory ones and she added the monogram to the shades.

She went to Joann Fabrics store and purchased these monograms and carefully glued them on.

Now, I want to copy this idea. They really look like they were sewn on.

She added this pretty picture on this wall that you see when you come in her front door.

You can see part of the different painting she had there before. This photo is from Thanksgiving.

These pictures were hanging between the front windows.

Now she has these initial plates instead.

The tab top drapes have been changed, too.

Now she has hung good ole drop cloths.

So now she has this much lighter and brighter room.

She told me yesterday that now she is painting her kitchen. She is going to get rid of the green walls like I did. I think she will love it and be surprised how much bigger it will feel.
Several have asked about the plates. They are from Hobby Lobby.
I will be sharing more changes of hers soon.

Have a super week!

  1. I love the new look. It has a serene quality now, and the color creates a nice backdrop for the other elements in the room. My focus was on the red in the before shots.

  2. Fun!
Both you and your sister have an eye for beauty!
And I have an eye for "snooping" through other's homes.
    Lovin' this!

  3. It really is a great transformation!! I have Decatur Buff in my house (not sure if it's the halls and staircase or the basement (I have two that look a lot alike)..love them both. The other is Shelburne Beige. I just adore all of the historic Ben Moore colors (Ben and I are best buds!) and how they just make your house flow together. I"m thinking of painting our kitchen soon too. It's currently a pumpkin color and I want to do a grey I think.

I love the lightning up of her dining room. Although, I really love the mirror shown when the room was red.

  16. So pretty! I was admiring the curtains and then you said drop cloths - you'd never know! Love how light and airy the space is now. I had a red dining room too.....it's a great color for a party/entertaining/having fun but it does grow weary doesn't it? So pretty....hope your sister enjoys her new color scheme.

  18. I am such a red lover, but the new look is fab! Sometimes you just need a change. The monograms on the lamps are very clever. Drop cloths? Wow, what a clever idea. I am so wanting to paint my living room. No color in there now. Just a cream with tan woodwork. Hoping to do it when the weather changes. Then I'll have more time to work inside.

  25. Just gorgeous! I'm wondering about the drop cloth drapes. Did she just fold them over and then use the clips? I couldn't enlarge the photo enough to get a good peek, everything is so much prettier and pulled together. I'm going to go find some of those initials!! xo

  61. Hi Kim! I really like the color change your Sister did. It does a great job of opening up the room and has a much lighter feel.

A few days ago I was again noticing your dining room color change and remembered your change. I looked for the color you used but was unable to find it. I am ready for a color change in my dining room and am wondering what color did you use?

  64. I love the change. We have an open floorplan and so I can't really have rooms in different colors. I think I'm glad, because I would have had a red room and now I think I like just hints of red better. I love what she did with the shades.
