Buyer Beware.......

9.19.2011

........or learn from my mistakes. In order to start some fall decorating I wanted some real dried gourds to mix with some real pumpkins and gourds found at a produce stand. I am trying to decorate using some natural elements this year. I don't do a lot of over the top fall decorating anyway. So I went on ebay to see if I could find some good buys on dried gourds.

I found lots of different varieties and came across these golden colored pear gourds. I had never heard of these before. Well, the seller was advertising them as primitive.

Not sure what is supposed to be primitive about them, but I do love the color of them. Well, you know when you look at something on line and it looks big. Read the print carefully. When these arrived they came in a little box. I thought what? This can't possibly be my gourds. Yes indeedy.

See how tiny they actually are? Well, my mistake for not reading the description carefully.

I had seen these plates at Home Goods a few days ago and decided to go back to get them to use for Thanksgiving. As I was browsing around I came across a big bag of, you guessed it, these same exact gourds. A whole bag of them for the same price that I paid for six! See, I thought I was getting this great deal. Six gourds for $7 plus shipping. Not! They also carry these in the purple color that this seller also carries. The whole bag is only $7!  The seller probably bought these supposedly primitive gourds at Home Goods and then split up the package for a wonderful profit. I know that is what the seller is in business for, but I feel ripped off.

On to second bad purchase. Cute pillow, right? I thought so, too when I ordered it. It is cute in pictures and looks like an actual grain sack with the writing added, but this is not well made. I cannot remember exactly how much I gave for it, but more than I should have. This is very flimsy and poorly filled.

See how thin it is. I thought it would be nicely stuffed. I could have made this. So just be careful of what you order sight unseen on line. This was purchased from one of those daily deal sites, but not One Kings Lane or Joss & Main. They only carry quality merchandise.

And here is a little peek at the start of some fall decorating.

And here she comes. Wow, they change so quickly. Now she is pushing this stroller. Still not walking on her own yet though, but she sure can crawl fast. She is home for the night and will be back in the morning.

Whew, I better go rest up!

  1. Oh she is sooooo cute pushing that toy! I can't believe how tall she's getting. I can say tall now that she's standing. Ha! I would be mad too if I found something I just ordered for alot less somewhere else. I would never order from that person again. I actually like the pillow. I agree it's not very full, but it's still cute and old looking. I like the quote on it too.

  3. Sorry you had such a bad experience...and isn't it ironic that an ad for said store is ahem,...close by? ; ) I admit that I haven't been very pleased with some of their items, either. Inferior to OKL and J&M for sure.

Lucky to have such a sweet little grand baby to kiss on, though!

  7. Ebay can be a tricky place to buy from...I feel like ya win some ya loose some when you buy from Ebay. Thanks for the heads up on the other store site...Sorry to hear about your unpleasant purchases :( On a better note your little granddaughter is darling...such a fun age!

  8. Hi Kim,
I ordered that same pillow from the same company and it arrived today. I was so dissappointed. It is almost flat, hardly any filling at all. (bummer)
I like the fabric and the print but I'm with you, it's poorly made.

I'm going to rip it apart and try to salvage it! LOL!

Your little grandbaby is so cute.
I know you enjoy her so much.

    hugs

  9. It's happened to all of us, Kim! I'll bet she's speedy; you might have to get up early just to move furniture and things out of her path!

  10. haha, look at Bailey following along behind her! That is so cute!! And yes, that is a ripoff when people do that...

  11. Bummer Kim on the gourds! Who would think. Funny, on the pillow, I just made one today, mine was the price of the stuffing I bought today at Walmart. More to come on that! I love the saying on your pillow.

  13. Don't you just hate it when you order something and it isn't the quality it should have been? Then you have to decide whether to keep it or send it back...extra expense.
Leila is growing so fast. Look at her go and Bailey right behind her. Sooo cute.
Let me know if you want a green gourd or two. I'll drop them off on the way to the store.

  14. Sorry to hear about the gourds. Lela is such a cutie and she is growing up so fast. Don't you wish you could bottle all that energy.

Just wanted to let you know that your sister's blog is highlighted and linked on my post. If you put the cursor on The Essence of Home you will see it is linked, just click and it does take you to her blog. Also, I guess there was something wrong with my featured button. I corrected it and left you sis a message that she can copy it now. Hugs, Marty

  16. You can't beat HomeGoods for great bargains! I saw the same dishes today and almost bought them! They are really gorgeous, especially the big serving platter and bowl. I just have no place to put them! Hmmm, maybe that means I just need another china cabinet!

  17. Sorry Kim, that is so frustrating! Such an adorable picture of your two babies...bet they are fast friends. :)

  18. She's a doll, Kim!
Sorry that happened to you! I read the review on the products if there are any. It has stopped me from ordering more than once.
    Enjoy that grandbaby!

  19. She is getting so big! I can't get over it! I love HomeGoods and wish there was one near me. Buying things online is always a tricky thing. I have learned to read all the print! I think the little baby gourds are awfully cute though!!!

  20. How disappointing for the gourds and pillow! I've purchased many vinyl wall sayings and images off of ebay, most were great! But I got hold of a bad one! Was a terrible experience, the most expensive I've purchased, and I never did get my money back. You win some and then you unfortunately lose some!

On a more positive note, precious little sweetie you have there!!! :) And I love the plates! Will be so pretty for fall and Thanksgiving!

  21. What a cutie Kim!!

Very good points though! We are so used to the web and maybe trusting others because we are honest in our own dealings.

Your plates will be perfect for Thanksgiving! Love the yellows!

  22. That is such a shame, Kim! It is very nice of you to post about it though and warn potential buyers. Buying online can be tricky. Mu hubby has gotten alot of GREAT deals but also some JUNK. Your granddaughter is so adorable and growing so fast! My son learned to walk behind a toy like that. His was a giraffe:):) XO, Pinky

  23. Oh my goodness...time does go by fast when you have a child! She is already pushing a walker! Adorable.
Glad to read I am not the only one who has felt had when ordering something online.

  24. Kim,

I know what you mean about thinking something is bigger when it's ordered. I recently ordered a "dough bowl" off e-bay. So disappointed when it came. It looked a decent size on line, but it's tiny. And....they didn't have the dimensions listed. So.... lesson learned.

Your grand baby is growing up really fast! It's unreal how fast this happens.

    Have a good week,
    Kathy

  25. Kim,
Thanks for warning us about those disappointing items, but you really scored with those dishes. Can't wait to see a tablescape with them. Leila is just the cutest thing!

  26. I have been ripped off a few times too over the years. I do a lot of online ordering but only order anymore from places that I know and trust!

Your little doll is getting so big. She will be running before you know it. It is good for them to crawl as long as they can because of the deep muscles that they are using. Kids that walk too soon sometimes have problems. xo Diana

  27. That large illusion happened to me once, but with a apothecary jar. It looked like a nice size and it was 6" tall when I got it! Been there, done that! Your grandbaby looks so cute, and will be walking soon!

  31. Leila is too sweet. We have a gourd farm near us in Wrens and I have never bought any, I feel bad. I should go buy some and mail some to you. The dishes are pretty and my best friend has them, she got hers at Marshalls.

  32. She is SOOOOOOOOOO cute! I bet you've had a fun day! Don't you hate to feel 'taken'. So, look on the bright side, you have to shop some more to improve your average of being taken vs. not-taken, to keep that 'taken' side low! ;o)

  43. yEP, ordering on line, especially Ebay, can sure bring some unpleasant surprises. The biggest one for me was MY fault...for not reading the description all the way thru.
This amazing tole tray..beautiful, large...black, just what I wanted. I won the bid, at a fairly low price, but when the tray arrived, it was a DARK GREEN. I thought "what the hey" and when I went back to read, sure 'nuff, there it was, "DARK GREEN IN COLOR".

Looking forward to your fall decos.

I am sorry but I had to laugh at your mini gourds, that has happened to me on ebay too. I made an assumption and ended up as you did with something mini.

I love the plates. Enjoy you grandbaby!

  50. I think I'd leave a bit of a bad comment on ebay if I were you. They are pretty cute...but, getting cheated doesn't feel good. I haven't been in a HomeGoods for a while. We have a bit of a vaca coming up and I'll get my chance soon. That store is dangerous for me!
