My Baby

10.13.2011

Today is my baby's fourth birthday. I cannot believe she is four already. It seems like I just brought her home not long ago. I found Bailey by looking on line at breeders and found one that was not too far away. I asked my daughter Brooke to go with me. When we arrived at the house it was a little scary looking. I thought this can't be it. We went to the door and it wasn't even closed all the way. This house was so very run down. It was probably a beautiful Victorian back in the day, but had been very neglected. The lady came out and took us to the back where the puppies were in a little metal shed. I truly think this was more of a puppy mill than a legit breeder. She had several breeds of puppies, but I was only interested in the yorkies. She only had two left and so I picked up the two puppies and chose Bailey. I really feel like I rescued her from sorry conditions. She had diarrhea when we got home and I took her to the vet and she had giardia. She was given a pill to take and that cleared it all up. Bailey's papers say she is a yorkie, but the vet and others believe she is a silky terrier. The breeder did have adult silkies there. She even tried to get me to take one. We love her no matter what breed she is.

Here are some pictures of Bailey who has filled our home with love after becoming empty nesters.

This was the day we brought her home. At first I was putting clothes on her, but not anymore unless it is real cold out then she has a sweater. She is my very first inside dog and I was exhausted through the holidays with getting up with her every night for potty time. So glad those days are over.

The date on this picture is wrong. The old camera was not set right. We brought her home on 12-7-07. I just had to put this hat and coat on her.  She hated being dressed and later learned how to take things off. She was soooooo cute though.

Here she is in her bed with the burlap cover I made. I am not a seamstress, but this was pretty easy except for the mess burlap makes.

This is what I see almost daily. She loves to play tug of war. In a minute, Bailey!

Last year she decided all of a sudden to play in our pond. She was a stinking mess and it took forever to get all that crud out of her hair. We didn't let her in it this year since we have two more snakes in there.

I wish our backyard still had grass like this. It all died out and now she has to play in the weeds.

This is a daily spot you will find her in especially if her daddy is in the chair.

She is so good about having her picture made.

Happy fourth birthday, my girl!!

Mom and Dad love you!

  13. Oh she is adorable!
I have a yorkie-poo who is just as cute (if I do say so myself!) and actually LOVES to wear clothes! It started when we got him, in the dead of winter, and he weighed 1 pound and 1 ounce and was freezing all the time...now he won't let us take off his clothes unless we put something else on him! He will even go and get something and carry it over to us!

    Happy Birthday to Bailey!

  14. How sweet! We have a little yorki-poo who just turned 6. We had never had a dog, let alone an inside dog! We had been married 23 years when we got her. Our breeder's housing sounds like yours, but she was legit and took wonderful care of the puppies she had. She was just a bit strange LOL. I was worried to death about house-breaking but had little to no problems with her. For the first few weeks she stayed in a room with a baby gate and a puppy pad overnight. In no time, she was telling us when she needed to go out. She went with us last week to Charleston - she travels with us and does so well! We do not have children and she is the love of our lives! I cannot imagine not having her. They bring such love and devotion. Bailey is sure a cutie and I can tell she is spoiled like my Abby! LOL I need to get one of those tug-of-war toys.

  19. She is so adorable. We have two dogs right now--my oldest two sons got one for each of their 12th birthdays, so these puppies are getting older. I'm guessing they'll stay with mom and dad even if they are still alive when my boys finish college and move into their own homes. After that, I think it'll be my husband's turn to choose the dog breed he wants. I'm guessing it's going to be a big dog (guess who doesn't have to vacuum the dog hair?). It's hard to imagine life without a canine baby around!

  22. Your Bailey is beautiful. We are almost empty nesters and after our Cocker Spaniel died, I vowed to not have
another pet. Well, I couldn't take it. It is so empty without a pet and not have a tail wagging when you come home. We now have a 10 lb Blenheim Cavalier
King Charles...she our baby now. Total 'get' what you are saying. Too bad you don't live here. We have a 3 Dog Bakery that does adorable Birthday Cakes for doggies!!! Bailey would love going there ;-)

  31. Happy Birthday Sweetie. I have a Yorkie as well. I keep her hair short. Her coloring on her face and head is like yours. But yours has beautiful fur. My little Yorkie has been not up to par. She has a bloated belly and a enlarged liver and some breathing issures. She wil trn 7 this month. SHe is a real sweetie. I posted a picture of her a couple posts back, I think the one about "My week-end...." last photo.
I can't believe the situation of the breeder where you got yours. How sad.

  34. Happy 4th birthday to your sweet Bailey. What a cutie and a very lucky puppy to have such a good home now. We have an almost 14 year old Silky Terrier, Buddy. He's the sweetest little guy, but very fussy and whiny in his old age. His hearing and eye sight aren't so good anymore, but he's still as playful as ever.

  43. Just adorable. What would we do with out them. Time flies. I found my Sissy Girl 2 years ago this Christmas on the highway right out side of town. I know you love your little baby as I love mine. Richard from My Old Historic House.

  44. Kim~ she really is a doll. I'm so glad you rescued her. These type of people that are breeding these poor helpless animals are unfortunately very common. They don't really care about the dogs...just the money. My daughter just rescued two toy poodles. It just makes my heart break for these poor babies. If everyone were like us-we wouldn't have trouble with strays or neglected animals would we?
Thank you for sharing your story and your sweet Bailey with us. Happy Birthday, Bailey.
    Hugs,

  63. Hi Kim-

She is so cute. The first picture of her is precious. My daughter is bringing her African born dog home with her at Thanksgiving. She is not even a year old. We have only seen photos of her. My daughter is going back to Africa to finish her Peace Corps service, but the dog is staying home with mom and dad. I will probably have some interesting posts on how she adapts to living in a house and not a hut.
Our pets truly do make a house a home. Happy Birthday to Bailey - I am sure she had a great day.

    My best- Diane

  69. Bailey is adorable! I have two yorkies at home, so I definitely know how they get your heart :)

Yes, it definitely sounds like Bailey came from a puppy mill... I rescued my male from a bad situation, so I know the feeling of wanting to save them.

I just hope more people become aware of puppy mills and don't support them. If we continue to purchase dogs from them, they will continue to produce puppies.

Adopt from a shelter or buy from a reputable breeder who breeds to the standard, does genetic testing and has a health guarantee. This is the only way we can stop puppy mills!
