Painting on the John

1.14.2012

I knew that title would grab your attention. Yes, I have been painting on the john. Fully dressed of course.

Since it is there in my way I just sit on it to paint the lower part of the walls around it. This body of mine is aching from head to toe so if I can sit and paint then that is what I will do.

I thought I would share how the powder room is coming along.
Beadboard wallpaper is up and first coat of paint is on. Walls above are finished.

Still have to paint the second coat. Mr. Savvy still has to add trim to the top of the beadboard. Then I have to paint that. I am soooooo sick of painting.

I am sick of the mess in the house.

I am sick of all the dust.

And I am really sick of my kitchen being the dumping ground for everything.

But most of all I am sick of wearing these paint clothes and looking like a bum. Did I say I was sick of?

The other day I put on real clothes and makeup, since I had to go buy paint, and Mr. Savvy said you look nice today. Poor fella. I have looked awful for days. I told him he forgot what I look like dressed normally.
I am a very messy painter. I don't know how some people can paint without getting it all over them and all over everything else.

If you paint are you the messy type or neat?
Do tell.

Still to do:
Go buy trim and install it at top of beadboard.
Paint second coat of paint.
Finish painting the hanging light and medallion.
Put sink back in.
Install new faucet.
Paint the mirror.
CLEAN!

I better get back at it. This better be the last weekend of this mess!

  1. I'm a messy painter - that's why I don't do it much. I'll bet it felt good to get into some non-painting clothes and get out of the house.

  2. I am such a messy painter! You should have seen my hands just from trying a sample. I am actually painting a bathroom today. Do you need a new seal to put the tank back on? I bought the Paint Zoom and can't wait to try it. I am sick of painting myself, and still have most of the inside to do...... :-(

  3. I am messy, too! Artist are seldom tidy people and you, my dear, are SUCH an artist!!

I have my paint grundgies on today as well. Painting the trim for our bedroom. Hopefully by the time I go to bed tonight the bedroom will be a done deal. (We started redoing it back in MAY!)

  5. Messy painter here too. Everything gets in a mess if I am even working on one tiny space..
just take a few deep breaths this will all be over soon and you'll have a beautiful space you love walking into or just passing by.

  6. I'm the world's messiest painter. all over me...everything! You're making great progress, can't wait to see the before and afters!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Making progress! I am messy unfortunately. Everytime I paint I say to my husband, "Oh I'm not going to change. I won't get it on me." I ruin so many good everyday clothes that my one drawer of paint clothes is turning into two. And I find myself at the store checking out and telling the cashier who is staring at my hands, "Oh I'm painting." Kinda embarrassing!

  10. Your kitchen looks like a home improvement shop that's exploded ... you poor thing. One would think that redoing a powder room would be easy because it's such a small room, but that's exactly why it's so HARD. What you've done so far looks really nice.

I had a nursery customer of mine attend a presentation I did for a rose society last year. She was used to coming to the nursery finding me in work clothes: cargo pants, boots, messy ponytail, etc. For this talk, I was clean, wearing makeup, my hair was fresh out of hot rollers, and I was wearing a suit. She came up to me and told me, "You look a lot different when you're out in public." I took it as a compliment.

  12. Oh Kim I can totally relate to so many things in your post! I paint furniture to sell so I am often dressed like a bum and I hate it too. I always feel better when I make an effort to look nice!

When I am working on any home improvement jobs my house looks like a tip as well, and yes, it does my head in.

In four weeks we are taking possession of the home we have bought here in Australia, and I am very excited! I will be diving straight into painting the bedrooms, bathrooms and hallway. I am giving myself about a week (eek!) then getting brand new carpet installed before we move in. I am telling myself it shouldn't be too bad because all the rooms have some exposed brick internal walls (love them!) and also large mirrored wardrobes, etc. Famous last words eh...it won't take long...hehe...wait till you see me moaning about it in a month's time!

    xx Karen

  13. Hi Kim,
    You are too funny!!
Thanks for the laughter when I read your title of your post!!
I'm with you I am a messy painter the stuff just seems to stick right to me, and of course in the place I didn't mean to paint...
Love the new colour on the walls & the bead board wall paper!!
Keep up the good work, soon it will be all down hill....to the finish line!
    All the Best,

  14. You're in the home stretch, Kim! I am messy, but try to be neat. It doesn't matter how hard I try I always stick an elbow in a wall or get paint in my hair.

  15. That is EXACTLY what my counter looks like when I'm working! THANK YOU! I am not the only one who spreads out in the kitchen! andrea@townandprairie

  16. It is looking great Kim! I am a pretty neat painter, but I do use my jeans to wipe my hands. And sometimes I lean over and get paint in my hair lol!

  17. I absolutely HATE to paint, and I am the messiest painter on earth. On my first stroke I can have paint all over my hand and splatters! AND I TRY to be neat! Imagine if I didn't try. Not only that, this is our 3rd big old house that we have renovated. Each of them with 12 foot ceilings. You would think I'd learn! ha! I feel you pain (literally!!!) Lori L

  18. I am the world's messiest painter. I have tried to be better but it never happens. The beadboard wallpaper looks AMAZING. The finish line is in sight. Hang in there!

  19. I'm such a messy painter that my husband just cringes when he sees me with a paintbrush in hand!
everything is going to look just gorgeous when done!

  20. I'm a mess- A flat out mess! When I have a big job to do (like rehabbing a house) I go to St.VincentDP and pick up a couple of old shirts and a couple pair of old pants and wear them for the project and then just toss them out. That way I can wash one and wear the other.

Can't wait to see your project done-it is going to be beautiful..xo Diana

  21. It looks beautiful so far, and the mess will all be worth it, I'm sure =) I am almost done my guest bathroom reno too, but ordered some towels from PB (and spent way too much on them) that I just had to have....then I can share on the ole blog =)

  22. hi Kim! I am in the hotel catching up for just a minute. I wanted to see what you are up to. I am a pretty neat painter actually! I am good for getting some in my hair though LOL!~ I can't wait to see your projects complete. I am going to be working on my laundry room soon. First picking a color, and then go from there. You always look pretty even messy and in your paint clothes:)!

  23. I want to say I am the world's cleanest painter however I did spill an entire can of paint onto my new hardwood floors when painting the kitchen. Also splattered it onto my floorboards to! I have however progressed my trim skills to the point that I don't need painters tape anymore! Can't wait to see the finished product!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am a painting tape, drop cloth maven because of the inevidable drips and such. So my messy is caught! Cleaning up after is such a pain. I try to avoid it by controlling myself! lol

    ReplyDelete
  25. It is coming along nicely. I agree the mess that painting causes in the rest of the home is the worst part. Just think, in a little while you will be sitting back and arranging things and being so thankful the worst is over.
I am the painter here too (and at my sister's home), and my paint clothes are splattered with paint, but it's a good thing my walls and trim are nice and neat.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I sling paint every where and drip it too but I am a good painter. I tape and drop cloth every inch I can and have wet cloths near me.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am totally messy when I paint...thank goodness my husband ends up taking over. He's a neat freak!
Your powder room is looking fantastic! Love the beadboard wallpaper.
Anyways I switched to google chrome today finally and so far no problems. Your blog is not jumping around anymore either!
I started laughing when you got to the photo of the shoes!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Even though you're sick of the mess now, you'll love the end result. I just moved my claw foot tub from the dining room back into the bathroom so I feel your pain. I'm not a messy painter but that's only because I worked at my dad's decorating company during summers to help pay for college. I learned how to cut straight lines and stuff so I never use painter's tape. Rarely use a drop cloth either but I have painted floors and any small spills clean up easy.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love to paint. For me it is totally relaxing...walls that is...trim is a different matter since I am so picky. Anyway, I am a fairly neat painter. I don't typically use drop cloths...if I use one that is when I trip on it and then make a mess...so I usually don't use one. I do use my paint clothes though to wipe my hands on.

Can't wait to see your completed powder room!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I can't wait to see the results. The bead board looks good already! Hope you'll find time for a hot bath after all your hard work.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It'll be worth all the aches & pains in the end, right? And just for the record, I am a messy painter too.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It looks like it is going to be a pretty bathroom! I like the beadboard paper and the color~working on one room has quite the ripple effect.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Your powder room is coming along nicely Kim. The wallpaper is so pretty and so is the color you used on top. All of my house clothes have paint splatters on them. I can't paint without getting it all over me, face, arms, legs, hair...its a mess lol.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I LOVE the color you chose Kim! It is going to be fantastic! As far as what type of painter I am, it depends. I am probably somewhere in between neat and messy. If it is a piece of furniture usually neat if it is a large room I start out neat and depending on how long it takes or what time of day it is depends on how messy I get oh and how often I get bugged.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm messy too. I painted my entire house 3 times in one years time.
I couldn't make up my mind on the color. I had one shirt that had all 3 colors plus trim color... And painting on the john..hahaha... is better than crawling around on the floor for this 45 year old woman.
I love the how your project is turning out!

  36. Oh, I didn't realize that you posted your bathroom today. Yay! Now I get to see how it's coming along. It's looking good. I love how the beadboard looks in there and I really like that color too. It felt like deja vu looking at your pictures of the unfinished project since that is what my bathroom looked like all day today. I am a very messy painter and have lots of ugly paint clothes to prove it! ha! I use my clothes to wipe my hands on and everything. By the time I'm finished, I usually have it in my hair and on the bottom of my feet! I'm glad that my painting is done and I can start the fun stuff with it now.

  37. I am a VERY messy painter. My husband says he doesn't know how I get so much on me.
I'm about to start on a bathroom...strip off wallpaper, then texture and paint. Not looking forward to it. But, it has to be done.
Yours is coming along very nicely.

  38. Lookin good Kim! That beadboard wallpaper looks fabulous! Love the color your chose for above it too. I am a pretty neat painter, but I still have a pair of old jeans that I save for when I paint just in case.

  40. I am proud to say that I don't make a mess...and the only reason I say that is because I've been painting for so long (about 25 years). Everytime a friend or family member needs painting done, guess who they call? They know I enjoy it. I love to see the difference afterwards. (I don't tape out anything!..guess I've just developed a steady hand over the years) Your bathroom is coming along great!! Can't wait to see the end result.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It is looking so good! I am such a very messy painter!
In my hair, clothes, dog! However, when it is all done, I must say on the wall I do a great job!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Your bathroom is going to be so beautiful and so worth the agony! I thought I'd never hear you say that you were sick of painting. I'm a fairly neat painter. I do use tape, and that's the part I hate the most-taping.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I cannot wait to see it all and hear your thoughts on the wallpaper. I want to do that in my bathroom! I totally get the messy painter, I even have a paint bra! Because I always stick my boob up against some wet paint somewhere!!! Is that TMI?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I truly love this "real" post, Kim! I admire your motivation and energy ... you two make a wonderful team. And, I look forward to seeing the reveals!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh boy do I know how you feel! As for painting well, I love to paint, but I do manage to get it all over me. You can tell every color of paint I have used over the past 5 years just from looking at my paint clothes!

The bathroom is looking good. Can't wait to see it finished.

  46. Kim, it exhausts me to see what you have left to do. Not to mention all that y'all have accomplished. And the dust would put me over the edge. I think you deserve a spa vacation for all this work. I know it will be lovely when it is all done.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm a very tidy painter... except for my clothes! LOL! I can paint with hardly a drip, but somehow I always wipe it on myself or back into a wall while rolling near a corner! LOL! I have some very similar painting clothes. And, it does feel good when it is all over!! blessings ~ Tanna

  50. Let me tell you Kim, you probably look gooooood compared to the way I look when I paint. I get it literally everywhere. I just keep telling myself, "it'll look so good when I finish" that's what keeps me going. Pretty soon this will all seem like a bad dream and you'll have your gorgeous powder room.

  52. OH, it is going to look great, Kim! And I am sick of painting, too...and have looked pretty sloppy and paint covered all week! Just keep telling ourselves how great it will be when its finished...

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm covered in paint the second the lid is lifted! Why is it that decorating any place in the home makes the rest look awful and clutter and dust is everywhere? I love the thought of changing stuff, but the older I get the less I enjoy doing it! Nearly there Kim - and it's looking good :o)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm a very messy painter, Kim. Winds up in my hair and on surfaces that I don't mean to be painting. Sometimes it works in my favor though, because my husband doesn't usually like my mess so he does it. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished product. Knowing you - I'm sure it will be gorgeous!

  55. Here is a tip for the trim...before you nail it above the breadboard wallpaper, go ahead and paint it. Then install and just cover up any holes from the nails. Much much easier...not taping or cutting in. I did this for the baseboard trim I installed at the bottom of my wainscot that I painted and glazed. Had to replace the trim, but painted and glazed it before installing.
There's something about painting that is so alluring until you do it and then as you said, your body is protesting...I think sadly that for me, it's an "age related" issue. Was much easier in my younger days.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ohhh..love the beadboard and wall color. I recognize that mess on the kitchen table..I have the same thing, only it isn't paint cans...it's just stuff I'm trying to decide where to put. I'm a messy painter, by the way. I always have a wet cloth with me to clean up the spills before they dry..either on me or the floor.
Hope you get the powder room done today. I want to see it.
    :)

  57. I get paint all over me. I finally had to start a new "paint" shirt during my last project. The first one was so thick with it was stiff to wear. Your bathroom is looking great though.

  58. Yep, you got me on the title, too funny. I'm definitely messy- my pants are my cleaning rag. Love the paint color, looks like my dining room color, so clean and soft looking. Can't wait to see the final- I'm sure you'll rock it. :)

  59. Kim.....sorry I have been MIA...but I just spent 20 min getting caught up! Love your new look here and boy you have been busy!!! I am not surprised though. Can't wait to see everything finished. You are SO lucky to have Mr Savvy. I hope that we can get together in 2012.

  60. Hi Kim, I make a mess when I paint. Get it all over me ! I do love the colors in the JOHN. Love the bead board. Can't wait to see the final product and the new sunroom color. That's my favorite room in your house! We are in the midst of re-doing our laundry room..and I have a mess too! I know you'll be glad to finally sit(he he he) and enjoy the results!

  61. It's looking really good, Kim! I would be a "neat" painter, but that means I'm slower than molasses. The Man does most of the painting because he is super-fast, but super-messy! Oh, well, what are going to do? It's going to be lovely when you finish!

The bathroom is coming along nicely. I saw in some previous posts that it looks like you have painted the tv cabinet in the sunroom and done some other crafty things in there. Can't wait to see it!

  64. Oh Kim.... I'm so glad to see that someone elses house looks like a bomb dropped on it when they are in the middle of a painting project... and that I am not the only one who ends up covered in paint no matter how careful I try to be. LOL

Good luck with your projects... I can't wait to see the finished powder room. I will soon be tackling my bathroom with beadboard wallpaper, so I'm interested to hear your thoughts on it.

Yes, I am a messy painter. I look like I do a Farah Fawcett thing. You know where she was rolling "natural" on the canvas and selling them for huge prices?
Except no one would purchase anything I rolled on.

Actually ruined my favorite sweatshirt today:( Can't wait to see your bathroom when it's finished!

  75. Love all your projects and messy is OK. My daughter laughs at me since she says I am the only person she knows who could paint in her good clothes and never get a drop on them.
