What Is It?

2.11.2012

Do you see anything new?

How about now?

I found this copper piece a couple of weeks ago to add to my collection.

The first thing that attracted me besides being copper was the shape and the basket of flowers.

Take a good look at it.

I didn't know what it was until I read the tag.

Do you know what it is?
Do you own one?

Most of y'all are probably smarter than me and know what it is.

  1. My mama had this piece when I was growing up. I went thru all of what she had left back when we were home in November. I don't remember this piece in the stash. She may still have it in the kitchen.

  2. I don't know what it is, however I really do love it. I want to find unusual pieces for my home. By the way, your home is lovely!!!

  3. My grandmother had a decorative cover for her kitchen vent fan when we were growing up. You pulled a metal chain and the cover came up and the fan started. I see the hinge at the top so it reminded me of that or the lid to a bed warmer. So pretty!

  4. Great copper piece.Love the basket of flowers. I don't know, but I'll guess that it's a cake or pie mold?

  7. Could it be a pan to roast nuts, like chestnuts roasting on an open fire? Only it is missing the handle? xo

  8. Yep, I was thinking bed warmer. Whatever it is it's really a great piece. I love copper and the basket of flowers just adds to it's appeal!

  10. It looks like it might've gone on a stove of some sort, because of the hinge thing. Or at least it is a lid that went on a pot. ???? I don't know. Now you've got to spill the beans. Curious minds want to know. Ha!

  11. Is it some kind of cheese mold?

  12. I don't have a clue! The hinge is puzzling, since you said no part is missing. Hummm, I just know it looks gorgeous on your wall!

  13. I have no clue, Kim! I'm guessing a mold for some sort of food though based on the fastenings.

  14. Kim, is it a bed warmer? What ever the original purpose, it is a gorgeous piece. How large is it? I'm envious of the square piece hanging above. What is it? How large is that one? My "chef" is the copper collector here, but needless to say I'm fond of his collection. ;-)

    Pretty though...

  16. I know what it is.... it's..... driving me crazy that's what it is! I even tried to cheat and Google it and I still don't know. So I'll go with what Vicki said some sort of a vent cover. Something for a fireplace, like the damper?

  17. looks like it might be one of those lids to a stove top, like they have for those Agas in England.

  24. I have no idea but lit reminds me of a lid that would have gone on a copper pan with a really long handle that they would have held over a fire in a fireplace. Maybe it was a decorative version not really intended for use....?
My grandma collected copper popcorn popping pans like this but the lids were slightly pierced I thought???

    I give up!
    Tell us, please!

  25. I don't have a clue what it is, unless it's the thing they use to hang over woodstove pipe holes that were left when they changed to another heating method? I do know that it's copper, so it has to be good, whatever it is!

  26. I don't have the faintest idea. It is gorgeous though. I have a bed warmer and the hinges are much smaller than what's on our. Curious. Hugs, Marty

  35. I am not sure what it is, but when I saw the basket of flowers it looked like the floral sprays my grandparents made in their florist when I was a child.

  43. Morning Kim,
I think that is part of a bed warmer! It is really pretty. I enjoy copper too, and used to have a few pcs. in my kitchen for years. a Jello mold and a cannister set to be exact.

Enjoy your pretty new piece....can't wait to find out if I am correct or what it really is if I am not!! lol

Blessings for a delightful Valentines day hon,
    Nellie

  44. At first glance, I too as many thought it was a bed warmer with the handle and lid missing; however, could it be some kind of giant mold?...Whatever the original purpose, it is beautiful as is and looks wonderful on the wall...great find!!

  45. I also so 1/2 of a bed warmer. It looks nice hanging with the rest of your collection.

    ReplyDelete
  46. If the tag doesn't say it's a bed warmer I think they mis-labeeled it. However the alternative is the lid to a bed pan. The hinge with a screw hole means there is something missing.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Kim, I haven't a clue but I sure do like it!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have no idea...but it's very pretty.

  49. Lynn's engineer husband says that there is something missing and if it wann't labled as a bed warmer, either it was mis-labled or it is the lid for a bed pan. After spending a year is Southwest England and touring many National Trust properties, this has to be the lid to a bed warmer.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It is not the lid to a bed warmer. I can't wait till you see what it is!

  51. Driving me nutz! and hubby too...I think it is a chute cover of some sort.

  52. What is it, I don't know :) can't wait to find out, but it's pretty!

  58. Molds (or moulds, as it is also spelled) were popular during the Victorian Era, when dishes such as savory chicken-and-ham raised pie, sherry-infused calf’s-feet jelly, and sweet, palate-cleansing blancmange were all the rage. Copper molds were the preference of well-heeled cooks; tin molds in shapes with names like Solomon’s Temple were found in humbler kitchens.

  59. I have a friend that has one...it is to hang keys inside so no one sees them.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'll agree with Marigene...looks like when you grab the handle at the bottom and lift up it has a solid piece of copper underneath and it was meant to hang on the wall thus the hanging hole above the hinge!

    ReplyDelete
  61. It sure is pretty! It looks like a lid for something to me...but WHAT???
