Adding More Blue & White

5.29.2012

I always say what goes around comes around and it has been slowly happening in the dining room. When we built this house the dining room was done in blue and white and then I slowly got away from that and now have been bringing it back. Blue and white is so timeless. I had saved my blue and white pottery that I had and added it to the top of the antique armoire in the dining room along with the two pieces I found last weekend on our trip.

The lidded jar on the left and the vintage blue crock are the two pieces I bought last weekend. The other three I already had. The jar was only $15 and the crock was only $20 which I thought were very good prices.

This armoire was one of our first antique purchases over thirty years ago. It was only $90. Sold!

I told you I would share what I did to cover the white cushions that came with the kuboo chairs.

I took two of these old Pottery Barn pillow covers that are 20 x 20 inches and just slipped them on the cushion and zipped it up. Not a perfect fit, but good enough.

Flipped it over and voila we have a burlap look covered cushion.

Add this marvelous vintage grain sack pillow made by my sponsor Ann of Sutton Place Designs and they work perfectly together.

  10. Looks good Kim! I have those same chairs!!!! I found them at World Market in December when I only went initially to buy the Cafe Du Monde beignet mix hahaha I got 4 for my dining area. I was thinking of having slipcovers made for them in either grainsack or toile fabric. Yours look great with your custom "slipcovers"!

  23. Love the touch of blue and white you added to your dining room.....very pretty! What a great deal you got on your first antique piece too! Our first antique was a treadle sewing machine that we bought at an estate sale. I can't remember how much we paid for it but I do remember hauling it up the basement stairs! LOL Love how you recovered your chairs too...

  29. Love your dining room. I used to have blue and white in my kitchen, but it never looked good with the granite that I had installed. You have inspired me to get it out and, perhaps, put it in another room. Thanks!

  31. The blue and white looks great there. Is this the first time I have seen the armoir. How wonderful it is and a great story. Please don't paint it, I love it with it's originally stain.

  32. I grew up in Japan and my mom collected tons of blue and white, which I inherited. I packed it away 10 years ago but after seeing your gorgeous display I'm wanting to get it out again!
    Love those chairs too :D

  33. I think we're living parallel lives, Kim! I've started collecting quite a bit of blue and white lately. My goal is to get enough of a collection to display on my dining table.

And, I have the same koobu chairs and the cushions have gotten dirty. I asked WM if they'd sell me new cushions, but they don't do that. So, I LOVE your pillow cover idea... especially since I don't sew. Great solution!

  34. I love the addition of the blue and white Kim. Great idea using those pillow covers for the seat cushions.

Ann's pillow is perfect! She does such wonderful work.

  36. It is funny how our tastes evolve but we always seem to find our way back to or original look. I have tried to take my home in other directions, but it has never worked. What a smart ideas for the cushion covers. I love to use what I already have, and it doesn't have to be a perfect fit:) Lovely pillow by Anna.

  40. Hi Kim, now this is a great do-over! Love the rattan chairs, too! While my blue and white is not spectacular, I still love it and have always had it scattered throughout the house. Wish my parents would have bought more of it, when in Japan in the mid-50's. Se la vie! (pigeon French for "that's life").

  41. Kim, Your dining room is a great mix of traditional, vintage and french! What a unique and upscale look... and a very welcoming combination! the addition of blue makes it just delightful! I chose blue and white also, to accent my neutrals!
We have such similar taste, but you have the magic touch!!!!

  43. Looks great Kim!
I have many pieces of blue and white and used to have shelves full but got rid of so many pieces through the years.
I do have platters from my grandmother that I would never part with, but I have not made room for them here, unfortunately. Browns, tans, reds and greens have taken their place!

My old kitchen was khaki, white and blue in my last home. Decided to change it up a but when we moved here nine years ago.

    My how time flies!!
Hope you had a lovely long weekend.

  44. Also, love your kooboo chairs. I worked two of those into my client's changing room that spills out onto her patio and pool area.

They are so comfy! I was so surprised. Love their grayish tones too.

Yours are such a nice addition to the ladderbacks.

I used to have a collection, but I passed it on to my sister years ago before moving out to California. I wish I still had it.
Uh-oh, maybe it's something new to collect? ;-)
