Pros and Cons

6.26.2012

There are many pros of blogging such as new friends, finding inspiration, learning new recipes, learning to paint furniture, and so much more. Then there are the cons. Sitting way more than I use to and gaining blogger butt and extra weight and I bet I am not alone. Of course I can't just blame it on blogging. I am sure my age and menopause, yes the M word, have something to do with it, too. But before blogging I was walking two miles a day on the treadmill and working out on the bowflex and with free weights. The more I got into blogging the less the exercise happened until it was non existent.

At first I was making excuses for not exercising. I was using my age as an excuse for one thing. I have had to diet all my life. I have never been a tiny person and I figured since I reached my mid fifties why keep dieting? Why not just realize that this is the size I am meant to be.

That thinking was wrong. My feet started being achy every morning when I first got up and then my bra actually started hurting because of the fat on my back. That was the last straw! Gotta wear a bra because this girl is busty and they ain't perky without a bra. TMIF....... sorry. Just saying it like it is.

So now I get up at the crack of dawn, get my walking clothes on, get Bailey on her leash, get in the car and drive to the park to walk before it gets too hot.

We walk about two miles up and down hills. I wish I could just go outside my house and walk, but we live on a very busy road so the park it is.

Along with getting some much need exercise I am also watching what goes in this body.

The breakfast I eat most days is this organic cereal with blueberries and usually strawberries, too.

I am measuring out the cereal since a serving is 3/4 cup.

I use 1% organic milk and it tastes just like 2%. I don't use any sugar.

So this is my new breakfast of champions and I am already down 6 lbs in about four weeks.
Slow and steady. Took me a long time to put it on and it will be slow coming off.
I already feel so much better. Hopefully I will have better numbers at my next physical. The doctor told me over a year ago to just get out and move.
The first step is the hardest.

See you tonight for Wow Us Wednesdays!

  7. Great job, Kim! I also gained weight blogging. Can I really blame the blogging? I would like to blame something other than myself. Keep it up and thanks for the inspiration.

  8. Good for you. Amazing how quickly the pounds can pile on, isn't it? Now that I am in my early 50's it seems like it can happen overnight. Moving more really does help. Keep up the good work.

  9. last week, my hubby (who is super fit, but it trying to support me) and I started to really watch what we eat (using My Fitness Pal app on ipod) and exercise more. I've been doing Zumba and ordered a treadmill. I was anxious to see the results and almost cried when I lost all of 1 lb in a week. I gained a whopping 80 lbs this pregnancy, and while down 30, I have A LOT to go. I am still in my mat clothes lol. BTW, you always look great in any pictures I see you in =)

  10. I hear ya! I brought home a very sweet dog from the local shelter last year to help get me off my butt and moving. I knew my new big dog wouldn't take no for an answer to his daily walk, so out in the hills we are everyday together. Now, if only someone would limit my food to three cups of dog food a day I might lose some weight, too! Your post is inspiring.

  11. Great job Kim. Its not easy to loose weight. I lost weight by eating a protein with every complex carb I put into my mouth. I also cut out everything white.

  12. Kim~
    at approaching 67..
gosh hard to believe for even me!
but I'm in the same boat..
before the heat, every morning I was up with hubs..and out the door as i waved him goodbye..
Nikon and I would wander, walking for a good to hours each morning!!
    oh such lovely lovely memories!..
now hubby is on the gulf coast, i'm here in Denver getting ready to close on the sale of our home..and start moving towards our new adventure..
I agree with all you are saying.
the diet, and the exercise is what keeps us fit..and healthy ..no matter the age..
    time for my cereal!
    hugs and smiles!

  13. That's right, Kim! Thanks for the motivation! It's more fun to get back on track and get healthy with someone else!
I swim 4 morning a week just for the very same reason you stated! Well, not so much lap swim as exercise in the water.
Congrats to you for loosing 6 lbs and sticking to a healthy diet and exercise! Keep us posted and motivated!

  14. Kim, you have no idea how inspirational this post was. I am in the same boat as you and even my little Cindy is packing on the pounds from no walk and, of course, she's right by my side when I'm sitting on the computer. So I think I'll put on my walking shoes, gather up the leash, and head on out. Thank you.

  15. I am in the same boat right now. Once my blood pressure started rising I knew it was time to get busy. Keep us posted and good luck!

  16. Sitting is one of the WORST possible things we do for our bodies. I hear you on gaining weight from blogging, Pinterest, FB all of it. Time to move my butt as well. It's been so hot I'm not enjoying my walks at all. I'm much more of a fall/winter walker. Good luck with your changes. Keep us posted!

  18. Good job! I started weight watchers a few weeks ago, and was shocked at how easy it is! I can even eat at restaurants. I even made your squash recipe and still came in under points, so thanks for that! :)

Im trying to think of it as a way of life, and not a diet. Ive gained and lost the same 30 pounds for the last 28 years, and now Im cruising fast towards the "M" word, and it's getting harder! Im hoping this new eating plan will need to more energy and extra health benefits as well. Ive lost 11 pounds in the first month, but Im sure I will now level off at about 1 pound a week.

  19. Kim, you are speaking for all of us. Congratulations on taking the first step - literally! I keep setting a date; right now it is July 1; to get started on my own fitness program. And by fitness program, I mean putting on my walking shoes and . . . walking. I want to start early in the morning, before anyone has had their coffee and can see how I look in a tee shirt and pair of shorts. I hope I have your preservance! Best wishes and great job on the first six pounds!

  21. Great post Kim...when I'm exercising regularly I feel so much better, but it's so easy to sit down and read first thing. I keep telling myself "if not now, when?".
    That motivates me,

  24. Very inspiring post, Kim. I have been small my whole life but now that I have hit menopause due to cancer treatment before I turn 30, I am up several jean sizes and have that pesky back fat. I'm still "small" but rolly LOL muffin top and all. I've never had to watch what I eat and it has been difficult. I started exercising regularly and eating more fruits as well.
We love organic food in this house too!
    (btw your breakfast looks yummy)

  25. Kim, thank you for putting a name to my condition!! BLOGGERS BUTT!!! I love and embrace it! The name, not my butt!!

  26. Jane, you would be surprised how full this will keep you. With the fruit it is a large bowl full.

  27. That's awesome Kim. I have noticed the weight piling on my hips and butt the past 1 1/2 years too since I started blogging. I gained 10 pounds in 1 year. I do try to walk but with some health issues my walks are limited and slow. I should start measuring my cereal. I eat double what I should be. Thanks for that tip! Keep up with your program. Pamela

  31. Good for you! I am sitting here laughing because I certainly can relate to this one. I didn't have to watch my weight my whole life...somehow that makes it even harder. I was so used to eating what I wanted and then everything started slowing down. I can have a fun weekend and gain 5 pounds...then it takes 6 weeks to get it off. I've never been a person who ate huge portions, but once you start measuring out those 3 oz. of chicken or 3/4 cup of cereal...it is easy to see that I was eating too much. You might enjoy my post today since we are around the same age.

  32. same with me Kim, I started a new leaf in my eating habits a couple of months ago and have lost almost 20 lbs. I can't believe how much better I feel. Blogging IS great, but the hours in front of a computer are hard on us.

  39. excercise is good for our bodies as much as it is for our minds...it's a win win!

  40. Good for you, Kim! May we all follow your good example! Blogging wouldn't end up being such a good thing if we all let ourselves get overweight and out of shape, would it? Thank you for being an inspiration. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Although I spend way too much time in blogland…I truly could not give up my exercise ! Otherwise I have no energy whatsoever! Thanks for the encouragement though! I need to set some boundaries on my laptop! I love your breakfast of champions! It really looks and sounds delicious!

  42. The first step is the hardest and go for you for taking it, Kim. I just got back some of my weights that my daughter had and plan on restarting exercises that I did some time ago. They got me started exercising again back then and then I moved onto the gym. Now I think it's time to do planned out exercise again since I haven't been working since September. I used to climb up and down three flights of stairs at work at least twice a day and I'm sure that was exercise I didn't even realize I was getting.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Blogger Butt! LOL!! Too funny but all too real. I run to keep the weight down and I still struggle. Even though I love running, I love to eat, too. So my plan is to have fruit and veggie smoothies for dinner for a few weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yep! I'm hearin' you. I'm in the same boat, even though I walk up and down stairs all day...of course that cup of key lie pie ice cream I had for lunch didn't help any. Good luck on your exercise program. I think I'm holding off till Fall.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm hearing you, Kim! I am trying to regain some strength and lose a few pounds since I've basically been a lounge lizard for a while.

I'm finally back from my blog break! Never expected to be gone so long! I've missed you and all of by Bloggy Friends!

  46. Me too, Kim! I hated seeing photos of myself at Haven...I have gained about 20 pounds this year. You are a good inspiration. I need to, literally, follow in your footsteps to get in shape. I have enjoyed reading your posts about your new frame (it looks so good with the other woods in that vignette), your perky print with the "new" fun mat, and your lush garden.

  47. Congratulations! Just like everyone else I struggle with the big M word which included 10 lbs this past year....I didn't even know that until I went to the ER on Sunday bc I was so sick....THAT info really helped.....HA! Not only the computer time but the creating time eats into my walking or anything else time. sheesh....I'll live vicariously through you I guess...best of luck on the new decision!!

  48. Good for you Kim, you are right it is much easier to sit than get up and get moving. I have had a routine for years, I get up every morning at day break and walk my dog 6 miles. It is such habit now I don't think anything of it. Great job on the weight loss. Don't send what you lost my way thought. LOL

  49. Kim,

  50. I need to get out with my 80 year old neighbors and walk 2.5 miles. Our neighborhood has fabulous hills that really work you out. I pull weeds and cut grass with the push mower but not every day. Good for you for getting down 6 lbs already.

  51. Good for you, Kim. I have also had to diet pretty much my entire life and have noticed in the last couple of years that it is taking even more effort to maintain the shape I want to be. You have to feel pretty good about losing 6 lbs. so quickly and so "healthily"(word?... probably not). By the way, loved your term "blogger butt!"

  52. Ok Kim I will get off of my butt along with you! I have been losing and gaining back the same 10 pounds for a couple of years now and I'm so sick of it. And I have alot more to lose than that (more like 30) I used to be a tiny size 4 who ran 3-1/2 miles every day, ughh. But it's sooo hard when you like to cook, and drink wine while you're doing it, haha! Thanks for the inspiration, I'm going to get back into healthy mode too.

  53. YOU are SOOOO inspiring me, Kim!! I did so good last year and this spring I started eating like a crazy person and have gained back five of the twenty I had lost last year. Thank you for this little pep talk!! I needed it!! You go, girl! blessings ~ tanna

  54. You are so right about the first step being the hardest, but then (for me) it's also about not caving into my old ways too. Every now and then I give in to temptation and have a little guilt about it. But then, I think....well at least I've already made some conscious changes in my life. Perfection is not possible, so improvement is what I'm after. I'm trying not to be so hard on myself when I "fall off the wagon" so to speak. Your breakfast looks good. You better get a very early start on Friday with your walking. Did you hear it is forcasted to be 100 degrees that day? Yuck! I may not leave the house all day. Ha!

  57. That is great Kim!! Good for you! I finally got Luis to go whole foods/low bad carb with me and he has lost almost 30 pounds. Sugar is definitely the enemy, and I feel so much better without it.

  58. Thank you for posting about this. 3 years ago I had the same feet problem, high blood pressure and such bad acid reflux I could hardly sleep at night. I would lie down and my feet would throb and my stomach would get upset. It was miserable and it made me a miserable person. So I finally got tired of it and started to walk and watch what I ate. It will be 3 years in August. I lost 40 lbs. but it took me a year. Recently I have seen the weight creeping back on. I haven't walked in months. I need to get back in the groove and reading this post has helped. Best of luck with the process. Your mind-set seems to be spot on.

  64. Thanks Kim, I do feel so much better when I really move more. I like Leslie Sansone's really fast (3 miles or more) DVDs. Weather is no excuse, it gets hot here too. I just HAVE to do it before I can crawl into bed at night, and I live a low-carb lifestyle.

Glad you are doing so well. I'm cheering for us!

  65. I feel your paint! Oops! I mean pain! I guess I have been blogging long enough now that my fingers just automatically typed paint, not once, but twice! Anyway, I too have made it to the gym less frequently and my diet has suffered since I began blogging in January! Last Thursday, I buckled down and am making a focused effort to reduce my blogger butt! Thanks for sharing this! ~Kristie
