Just Plain Freaky

7.24.2012

Yesterday morning I came in from my daily walk and was sitting in my chair in the sun room having my coffee and I started hearing a scratching noise to the left of me.

Welcome to my office. Yes, this is where I do all my blogging. As I was saying some strange noises started next to me and I looked in the direction it was coming from. It seemed to be coming from the box in the wire basket or so I thought.

Bailey heard it, too and jumped up on the sofa and was staring towards the basket. So then I knew I was hearing something, but not sure what. I thought some critter had climbed in the box in that basket and was scratching and digging around. Next thing I knew popping noises started and enamel was flying off the vintage French address sign.

These are some of the pieces that popped off and landed on my notebook.

Since the table is bamboo and has slats on top several pieces were on the floor.

As you can see the first number four is losing it's enamel for some reason. It already had some missing when I got it, but is losing more.

Just plain FREAKY!

Thanks so much for all the sweet comments on my guest room reveal post yesterday.

See you tonight for Wow Us Wednesdays!

  3. Totally weird! Was thinking, maybe there was moisture behind the paint, and it is drying out now in the ac, or the metal expanding in temp changes? Love your office! And the basket is amazing!!

  4. That is so strange! I agree with Daniela, thank goodness it wasn't a critter!

  6. Just a suggestion.. Think hard about what the number 4 means in your life.
seems to me there will be a message for you in those thoughts.

  8. As I was reading this my husband walked by and asked what I was looking at. I showed him the picture of your enamel sign cracking. He thought it might be the expansion of the underlying metal due to heat in your sun room, or the sun hitting it directly and in turn heating it up. Metal expands and contracts with changes in temperature, thus if it was expanding it could be causing the enamel to crack off. He said the same thing happens with our tooth (hes in the dental profession). For anyone who has a metal filling, they expand and contract with changes in temperature (drinking hot coffee or cold water)causing small fractures which often lead to tooth fracture. Wheewwww...that didnt seem like it would take that long when I started. Just his guess but it sounded good to me!

  10. I stepfather used to bring us gifts from humid Saigon to dry California, and they would also sometimes fall apart as you describe. :(

  11. Glad it wasn't a critter! Agree, more likely the expansion/contraction of the sign with the heat and A/C.

  12. I thought you were going to say a little tiny critter had somehow ended up in that planter....ick. Glad it was just freaky enamel! lol

  13. It is very freaky. I liked Sonny's explanation, but Our French Inspired Home makes more sense. The guest room looks fantastic. I loved it before but really love it now. Have a great week. Sheila

  14. That is freaky, Kim. I wonder what the heck caused that.

  15. At least the sign looks good with the chipping paint! Just makes it look older.

  16. If you figure out the cause, you'll have a new way of distressing metal to show us all! lol ~ Maureen

  17. Oh, no1 I remember when you got that sign! I love the look of your guest bedroom bed. Stopped by and read the post, just did not get time until now to tell you! I just might be brave enough to paint some mahogany furniture in my bedroom!
Kim, I love all you do!

  19. What the heck?! :)

I'm just glad to know Bailey was there to "verify" the noise...how many times have I looked at one of my dogs as tho' to say, "Did you hear that?" It's very comforting to know I'm not losing my mind when I hear odd noises...or, in this case, if my table decor started popping apart in from on my eyes.

  20. I know there is a logical explanation - but I'd call The Haunted Collector!

  24. How totally bizarre!
    Very spooky too!
Perhaps there is something you can do to preserve the rest, so it doesn't pop off all the numbers!

  26. do,DO,do,do....do,DO,do,do!!!!! FREAKY! That would've been even more scary at night. How wierd. I wonder if you can get Ramsign to replace it? Although, I think it makes it looks even more vintage, but I would hate for anymore to come off. Oh, wait a minute. You found that at an antique store. Maybe that's why they were getting rid of it! Ha!

  27. That is freaky! I wonder if it's the sun or the heat? Weird - I would have run away screaming!

  28. I thought you had an experience similar to mine when I was taking such a relaxing bubble bath only to be disturbed by rustling from the potpourri on the tub. Out crawled a cockroach and ruined what relaxation I had managed to find. So GLAD that wasn't your experience! Hope you can touch up the paint!

  29. Well, on the bright side, now it looks old and chippy!

  32. Oh good Lord that would have sent me running! Once my kids are asleep at night I'm always hearing creepy noises. But if that started happening I don't know what I would have done! Freaky!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would've been so freaked out I would've been running from the room screaming!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Truly spooky, indeed! I probably wouldn't have stuck around to see what it was! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  37. I was waiting for a MOUSE story! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Really weird, but maybe a heat related thing?! Or maybe it's a sign that you need to go to France and find someplace with that street number to visit?!...even better, and the explanation I would go with! ;-)

I love the new look of your guestroom too...so bright and pretty!

  39. Freaky is right, Kim. Perhaps the heat caused some expansion of the enamel??? Hmmm? Still looks great though.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The poor little sign just wanted to fit in! It thought that if it was all chippy and shabby that you might love it more! :)Cindy

    ReplyDelete
  41. Too bad about the little sign. At least now its got patina!

    ReplyDelete
  42. How strange, did the paint get to hot and start to pop off? I like the look of it all chippy:)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I noticed you have a beautiful bottle in the window nearby...maybe the heat from the sun combined with reflection through the bottle? IDK, anything is better than a sneaky, dirty little critter though!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh wow, that is strange. I was so scared thinking you were going to say something jumped out at you! LOL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow- Guess I would not want to use those signs outdoors here where they would be exposed to freezing cold and then hot and humid weather. NOT GOOD~ xo Diana

    ReplyDelete
  46. Freaky indeed! Just glad it wasn't a critter!

  47. This is going to sound crazy, too, but the windows in my bedroom pop when the sun hits them in the mornings during the summer. I asked the glass guys, who thought I was nuts, but I swear it is true. Point being, maybe the sun hits it a certain time of the day and is making it heat up and the paint chip. Or maybe you just have a french ghost. Lol.
