Welcome Fall

9.20.2012

Fall is definitely in the air throughout blog land and here in Georgia, too. We have been very spoiled this week with glorious cooler weather and much lower humidity. This kind of weather just adds a little spring to my step. I added the same basket I used last year to the front door, but with a change and different filler.I shared a peek at this on my facebook page a couple of days ago so be sure and join there for earlier peeks.

This is the time of year when my front door color works well with the colors of the season.

I don't have pumpkins and things out yet just a few golden leaves, dried pods, pinecones, and other fall filler. Pumpkins will come later sitting here and there on and around the porch.

This is how the basket started out. It is the same one I used last year.

The paints came out. First I did a coat of Shutter Gray Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint and it just wasn't the right look so next was a coat of Pure White Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I also brushed it over the welcome tag. Then dark wax was brushed over the basket.

Then I went over the WELCOME tag with black and then gold Gilders Paste. Such a quick an easy way to update this plain brown basket.

Summer plants are still thriving right now, but soon pumpkins will replace them. Cornstalks may be used too since we grew our own this year. Might as well recycle them.
I picked up the new black door mat at the store, Tuesday Morning, when I was out with my mom and sister last Monday. They are only $9.99. They also have the real vintage olive buckets for only $49. So go check out your Tuesday Morning store if you have one.

  1. amazing!!! I have a glass 'screen' door to contend w/ when it comes to my front door decor. May just have to find a way to hang something on 'it' this season. I love what you've done here - all of it!

  2. Looks wonderful Kim. Adding the paint is a great idea. Your seasonal plants are beautiful. Ours are finally coming back and the yard is nice and green again. So happy we finally got some rain!:-)

I bought another of those baskets last year. When I did the Fall arrangement for the inside french door I used the new basket and left that arrangement put together at the end of the season. Glad I did now, it is so elaborate I wouldn't like to have to replicate it this Fall. The original basket I change out for the other seasons using less stuff.

It made me remember the interesting post from Nancy's Daily Dish about the story of the artillery baskets used during the wars. Is yours one of that kind? I have never seen one here.

  47. This is so beautiful! You are exactly right, the colors of the leaves totally coordinate with your front door. I love look of this rather than a wreath. Now I'm already planning for next year. Thanks for the inspiration!

  48. Another warm and welcoming Fall welcome from you! The chair is a fun accent, and your fern is ha-uge. And, the added paint to your basket looks great. We put cornstalks by our entry one year, but too many little lizards (gekkos, whatever you all call them down there) would like to hide in them and scare the "youknowwhat" out of me when I'd sweep our entry. Sooo, no more. LOL

  49. Your basket looks great, Kim. I loved the original color, and the new paint treatment looks even better. Decor items that can be freshened up a bit are so much better than having to start all over. Love the dried florals, too.
