A Woodland Christmas Mantel

My mantel is very basic and traditional with a mix of vintage thrown in. I was going to switch out the painting over the mantel, but I am trying to keep things simpler this year and that includes not having to move too many things out and in so I just worked with it.

I don't have a large deer so I pulled out this goat thing that I purchased from Wisteria years ago. Hey, it has antlers so we will pretend it is a deer.

How did I put this all together, you ask? Well, I took some faux garland and added some clippings from our Leland cypress trees in our yard. Then I just added some candle holders for some added sparkle. Then I stuck a couple of my antler sheds in the garland. At first I could not figure out what to put at each end. I had two cone trees, but they were too red next to the painting. Then I added birch candles on  stands and they just blended with the wall color. Then I saw a mantel with trophies on it and the light bulb came on. I only have one real trophy, but the black urn has the same shape. I can't remember who had the trophies to give credit, too. So glad someone gave me the inspiration I was needing. The only new thing are the small votives from PB outlet.

Post edit: many of you have said my goat thing is a deer. I believe it was a ram goat I ordered from Wisteria years ago. I know it was not a deer. Don't think deer are white anyway. Here is a pic of a real ram goat.

The Homespun Christmas Party, to link your Christmas vignettes and mantels to, is still going strong and will be open all week so come add yours if you haven't. Thanks to all who have already joined. There is a whole lot of inspiration and talent. You should check them out if you haven't.

Have a super week!

It's a great designer's trick to add live greenery to faux garland. I think your trophies were the best idea for the ends...I love the authentic one...they are getting harder to find these days.

Hi Kim, I think many of us are making Christmas easy this year. It is a very smart idea to use what you have and add the Christmas decor to it!!! Your mantle looks so rich. natural, lush and very Merry!!!!You can decorate anything and make it look like a masterpiece!

Debbie @ MeandMyDIY said...

Kim, your mantel looks so natural and relaxed, not fussy at all. I love hearing how you tried different things before finding something that worked. I have worked and reworked my mantel a dozen times (okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but at least 3) and thought to myself "I have a lot to learn." I've been looking forward to seeing your mantel this year, and just assumed you instinctively know what to use ahead of time, and it automatically looks good. Thanks for sharing with us your thought process. Glad to know you're human. :)

Kim, your mantel photographs are stunning! They look as if they are lifted off the pages of a Southern Living Chrsitmas issue. They also remind me of of era when people used to walk the streets under the light of gas lamps and lanterns and sing carols. Very classic!

Absolutely gorgeous! I love the trophies and the basket of greens on the table. I agree with Andrea, your room looks just like a magazine. It's simply beautiful.

This is my favorite mantle of all the ones I've seen this year - low the woodsy/natural feel, the creation of height and especially the goat..love the goat-wanna-be-deer, lol...everything is just perfect.

Love your mantle. I'm pretty sure that's some sort of deer. We raise goats, and it's not a goat! The horns, ears and face are all wrong for a goat, but spot on for some sort or deer!
