My Favorite Room.....Number Fifty-Three

6.28.2013

Hi everyone! I'm Angela from Number Fifty-Three and to say that I was shocked, honored and giddy when Kim asked me to share my room is an understatement.
I decided to show you all my living room because it has undergone the most changes to date in our home. Literally, I don't think that one piece of furniture remains from its previous incarnation!
When I'm decorating it is really important to me to stay on a budget and to incorporate lots of thrifted items. I love my home to be collected and have a fun eclectic feel and the best way to accomplish that is to search thrift stores, estate and tag sales, flea markets and craigslist frequently.

Since I love painting furniture, buying vintage is the perfect opportunity for me to add a bold and fun touch to our living room. I sell a lot of what I paint, but every once in a while there is something that I just cannot let go of...like this peacock dresser. For just $20 and a sample pot of paint, I was able to transform an old and worn piece of furniture into the main inspiration piece of our home. This punch of turquoise is repeated in almost every other room and keeps things from being too bland and serious.

We recently bought this couch, new, after months and months of debating and searching. Typically, I like to leave my dominant items (like the couch, curtains and walls) very neutral so that I can freely add and change accessories. This sofa actually has a very subtle tone on tone herringbone pattern which I love. I adore brass, so that nail head trim was just an extra awesome bonus and the colorful pillow was a lucky Target find. I was so excited to get something that incorporated all of the colors of our room on one item.

One of the big challenges I've faced in decorating this room is that it is very open. It flows as one large room from our entry, and our fireplace lies between the two spaces. To incorporate it all together I've set up part of the entry as an additional seating area. Here's a view of it from the couch in the living room.

Our living room is also open to our dining room through a large archway. You can see our peacock dining chairs in the corner to tie the two spaces together.  This secretary is a really important piece to me and was in my home growing up.

I'm constantly in a struggle with balancing my need for order and neatness with my love for thrifting and collecting.  Thus, I try to keep everything as minimal and grouped as possible. But, I could not resist this little owl family found on a recent outing.

See. I really have a thing for brass. Seriously, every home needs a giant brass insect! And, I love casters so this retro coffee table that I painted in a creamy wheat had to stay!

Part of my love for buying vintage pieces is obviously the financial benefit of not paying full price, but it digs much deeper. I love the uniqueness of finding things that not everyone has, the environmental aspect of saving something from being tossed out and the memories of hunting for these things. I have so many fun stories and memories of acquiring my collections and of the interesting places I've gone and people I've met while doing so.

Again, a huge thank you to Kim for having me share my room with you all today. Savvy Southern Style is definitely a place that I frequent for inspiration and for motivation to get projects accomplished in my own home.

I'd love to invite you all over to take a peak of my entire home tour and to see everything else that I've been up to on my blog!

Thank you Angela, for sharing your favorite room with us. Okay, y'all you know what to do. Grab a drink, get comfy and pop on over to Angela's and look around and say hello.

  13. Someday, you can interview me and instead of calling it "my favorite room" you can call it "my only room." Because although we've lived here 6 years, only one room is finished.
