My Favorite Room....Talk of the House

6.07.2013

Hello wonderful Savvy Southern Style readers! I’m Kelly from Talk of the House, and I can’t even begin to tell you how honored I am that Kim asked me to share my favorite room here with all of you. I have only been blogging a little over a year, so this is my first guest post (and I am a little nervous!) Like many other bloggers that Kim has so graciously featured, it was hard for me to choose just one room in our home that is my favorite. There is absolutely nothing formal about our house...we are all about being casual and comfortable. I finally decided that our very livable back porch is my favorite for now - especially at this time of year.

I teach school, and when we get out for summer break, the first place I want to be is outside. The back porch is a good place to cool off and rest when I am working in the yard.

Plus it is a great place for entertaining.

My husband built the dining table using the base from a very old table we had on the deck of our first home. The chairs around it were the first pieces of furniture we purchased as newlyweds.

I like to use fresh herbs in cooking (especially with summer tomatoes), and the porch is right off of our kitchen and dining room. So I mixed geraniums and herbs for the arrangements out there. It really smells good and is handy for adding in dishes.

That skirted table is actually an antique wicker one that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. A new top was built and added to it by my husband a couple of years ago. He also built the cupboard hanging there on the wall above it. Originally, I had it filled with a collection of Meader’s pottery, but it looked too dark and more like fall and winter. So I took all the pottery down and filled the shelves with baskets that now hold candles, floral supplies, and other items I use in decorating.

The labels on the baskets were made from kraft paper that I lettered and glued onto my favorite Christmas gift wrap from Target.

Like many of you, I believe in the power of paint to inexpensively change the look of a space. This wicker has been sooo many different colors….white, dark green, chocolate brown, black, and now taupe. This latest color has worked well for me because it is such a good neutral that can go through any season with a simple change of throw pillows for a new look.

That small desk was my first antique purchase as a teenager. It was painted bright orange, but I stripped it down to its bare wood. It only cost $10 of my hard earned babysitting money back then.

The little wicker chair was my daughter's when she was young, and the other child’s chair came from Pottery Barn Kids.

And that wraps up the tour of my favorite room – our porch.

Thank you so much Kim, for allowing me to visit with you and your readers here! I hope all of you will drop in for a visit over at Talk of the House very soon.

Thanks, Kelly for sharing your favorite room with us. I would love to hang out there.

Don't y'all love her porch? Please go over to Talk of the House and take a look around. Her home is beautiful and she is a fellow Georgian. When I found her blog I was drooling over her style. She loves checks like I do.
