A Room Never Shared

7.29.2013

What? There is a room that has not been shared here before? Yes, actually two, but we are just looking at one of them today.

Now, I should start this post with a warning label. Run before you are swallowed up in a time warp!

We are going back in time somewhat. Let's travel back to 1995, the year we built our home.

The year when jewel tones were the colors being used in decor. And wallpaper. Lots and lots of wallpaper. All the wallpaper in our house has been removed or covered up except this one tiny room.

So, are you ready? Don't say I didn't warn you.

When you walk through the farmhouse style guest room this is what lies before your eyes.
 The bathroom.

Now, I have tried to add a little farmhouse flair in here the best I could.

The brown bathtub/shower with its glorious brass doors is on the left. What, you haven't seen brown bath fixtures? Oh, but it gets even better.

There is the glorious brown throne, john, loo, toilet, commode, or whatever you call it. Yes, we have brown fixtures in this bathroom. What can we say? They were a DEAL and our pockets were not huge at all (and still aren't) when we built this home. These were discontinued pieces and Mr. Savvy said why not? Hopefully one day the toilet will be replaced with a white one and the tub can be refinished to white, but for now it is what it is.

Brass fixtures were all the rage in the nineties, too so of course I had to have them. Oh, and the faux marble vanity top was a must have.

This picture has hung here for years. I just love the vintage style of it. See, not everything here changes.
:)

Oh, but I saved the best for last. The LINOLEUM floor!! Oh, it must go some day soon, please.

I actually kind of still like the plaid wallpaper. It is red, blue, green and tan. When I first decorated this room almost 18 years ago I had Ralph Lauren bedding from TJ Maxx on the bed in a burgandy, green, and navy paisley pattern and it worked with this bathroom.

But, we make do with what we have and that's okay. The guest rooms are basically only used by family and then there is my poor friend, Shirley who has to use this tiny outdated bathroom when she is here.

When I stayed at Shirley's this was the beautiful large guest bath I got to use.

Poor Shirley, it just isn't right.

She gets to come enjoy my lovely little bathroom again this week one night before we head to Atlanta for the Haven Conference.  Yippee!!

Y'all have a super week!

  3. It's not so bad, Kim. I think you could jazz it up a bit even with some vinyl linoleum faux wood plank flooring, which you could put right over the old floor. I like the wallpaper and the brown toilet and tub are clean, and that is all that matters! I know you could do this on a budget!

  4. Poor Shirley!;) Have fun when she visits!:)

  5. You have been holding out on us, Kim! I like the wallpaper. I'm sure you could work with that. We had the same floor in our hall bath and I thought it was so wonderful when we put it in. Ditto the brass fixtures. Will we all hate satin nickel fixtures in ten years? Who knows? Have fun at Haven!

  6. I like that wallpaper in there!! I love seeing your hidden room! Wow, who knew? I'm sure you'll whip that room into shape too.

  7. I actually love the wallpaper in your bath Kim. It does have a RL farmhouse feel to it. I have not shown the master bathroom in this house we are in now....It is terrible! But we are starting work on it this week sometime.

  8. I like the plaid wallpaper, I think it is fabulous. I do agree that maybe the brown fixtures need to go, but all in all it is a cute bathroom. Hugs, Marty

  9. Well, I can honestly say that your "farmhouse bathroom" is really very pretty...seriously..pics don't do it justice...and knowing you, this post must be a segway to another makeover!!!...See you soon!

  10. I was surprised! I thought you were showing the bonus room. I like the wallpaper. It works with your farmhouse room. I heard brass is on the comeback trail...just when I was ready to talk J into a frameless shower surround.;-)

  11. Ahh, yes - jewel tones! I still have a bathroom with red walls, and trust me, your bathroom is waaay cuter than mine! Oh, and I just remembered the kids jack and jill bathroom with hideous wallpaper and some accent tile that I loathe (it's been that way since day one -- builder chose that stuff). I think most all homes are a work in progress, especially when we have budgets and husbands to consider. :) Thanks for sharing this...I love seeing that great blogger homes have unfinished areas too. (Although I think your bathroom isn't so bad...I like the plaid wallpaper!)

Have fun at Haven...I wish I could be there! Maybe next year!

    Have a great day!

  13. LOL- Well, at least it is not avocado green or gold. I'd say it is neutral enough to not be AWFUL. Have fun at Haven- I can't wait to hear more about that- xo Diana

  14. I like it - and I recently read that brass is slowly coming back.......so don't be in too much of a hurry!

  19. I actually like it and if you'll wait just a few more years all that style decor will be back IN vogue. If it were me I'd change out or spray the light fixture ORB and call it done.. its uniquem has great eye appeal, feels warm and cozy and offers the Unexpected and some Whimsey. Every home needs that and you already have it:)

  20. You're too funny Kim. I'm sure Shirley won't mind at all. Can't wait to see you and Shirley at Haven on Thursday!

  21. I like the wallpaper, and think you've done a great job of bringing the updated farmhouse look to it. I have a hideous bathroom, too, but sadly it was brand spanking new when we moved in two years ago. I don't know what they were thinking lol

  22. Hi Kim,
I am sure Shirley is more interested in the time she spends with you than the time she will spend in that bathroom, not that your bathroom looks
horrible or anything close to that. At least your brown fixtures are fairly neutral. In our old bathrooms in our first house we had pink fixtures in one and what they used to call a Sea Green in the other along with green and black tile........that was fun to work with.... so when we built this house I made sure we had neutral fixtures to say the least. lol

I have wallpaper in my kitchen too, and blueberry colored counter tops and this week I changed all the things on the counter top to a more updated look by using the white and creams, and hubby and I both love it, just gave the whole kitchen a totally different look, and bet if you did that in your bathroom you would love it wallpaper and all.................
I will be posting some pics this week hopefully.

Thanks for sharing your bathroom. We all have stuff that needs updating.........will be fun to see what you do when you get to it.

    Blessings, Nellie

  23. Yeah, that wallpaper looks good! I still have the linoleum floors and faux marble vanity tops in my bath, some day, some day they have to go!

  24. Hey I understand totally! Still have lots of things I want to change but my budget can only allow so much.Shirley's bathroom is gorgeous!!! I would be feeling guilty too LOL! Have a great time at Haven.I hope to make it there one year....maybe next year who knows.

  25. I actually like the wallpaper and the brown fixtures, since I am not a fan of all white!!! It has a cozy, farmhouse look and appeal, don't be in a hurry to change everything!!!

  26. Huuum, looks like my EVERYDAY bathroom! LOL! Floor and all! Quit ya Bitch'n! :)

  27. Hey!!!!! I actually love this wallpaper! It looks very farmhouse. You are far too hard on yourself and your gorgeous home. Kim. I'd stay in that room and use that bathroom any time!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Kim, I actually like the brown plaid wallpaper, and the farm theme. I know how you feel about the bath..all of ours need updating..BADLY. Have fun at Haven.

  29. I think we all have those 'rooms' that are on the just a tad outdated trail. That is what we get for wanting the latest beautiful eye candy, right? This bathroom is quite cute and that wallpaper is great. Love it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't feel bad Kim! I have the same flooring in my kitchen.....of all places! LOL :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wow! Thanks for sharing! It makes us all feel like you are more like the rest of us, with a room or two that you don't love! ;-)

I still think it's a nice bathroom, and I love the way you've decorated it!

I'm sure that Shirley loves being in your beautiful home, and in your company! You are tow very sweet ladies! Can't wait to see you both at Haven!!

  32. my old house was built in 1996 and we had that towel holder and brass. its funny how things change .

    ReplyDelete
  33. Actually Kim, you have it looking very cozy and farm vintage!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hmmm... If that is the worst your house has to offer, consider yourself extremely fortunate. I don't mean to knock you, but there are millions of people right here in the USA who would see the bathroom you dissed as the height of luxury. There is not a thing wrong with your tan fixtures or the shiny brass or the faux-marble countertop. When you diss those, you are dissing lots of us.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I actually kind of like the wallpaper. Our house has a bathroom that came with that exact flooring.

    ReplyDelete
  36. you made it work! goes with your theme

    ReplyDelete
  37. Now see....I smiled when I saw this bath...because I remember those good ole colors and days...but seriously, the toilet....it has got to go!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hahaha, you made me laugh Kim!! But honestly, I love all that plaid! and FYI, I too still have the same kind or top and fixtures in my vanity! hahaha! Gotta love the 90's!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kim, I love the plaid, especially because it's red, blue, green and tan! I think it's fun for a bathroom. And, I like the farmhouse motif, too. To me, this bathroom is pure country - not overly done, but right for what it is!

  44. Hee Hee, I love all the honest comments. It's more than fine. Aren't you glad you hung in there...brass is back, so you are in again. I wonder how long until linoleum comes back?

    ReplyDelete
  45. This was like jeja vu....I had almost every single room in the old house wallpapered but THANK GOD I ripped it all out a few years ago:):0 However, I d like this wallpaper, it does seem farmhoise to me. I am SURE you will be putting your magic in here soon. I would be happy to stay in there, our guest bath is about the same size now..........

    ReplyDelete
  46. I like the wallpaper too. And I saw a tutorial on Pinterest on how to paint the outdated shower and such that has brass. And I KNOW you can paint! Now don't knock linoleum floors. That's my kitchen.

  47. I like the wall paper and the art. It's really a cute bathroom. I think the updates you mentioned would be perfect.

  48. Ahem, Jan, I was being sarcastic in this post. Not dissing anything. I know we are very fortunate to have what we have.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You are funny, Kim- I don't think Shirley minds at all. The wallpaper is apparently timeless, because it still looks current to me. I don't even mind the tan fixtures. See you in a couple of days!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Count me among the many that actually like it. I do know what you mean about the linoleum. I have it in my laundry room. I don't love it, but it works.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I like this little room! It's charming. And your linoleum is so much nicer than the dark red faux brick patterned kind that we had :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think your bathroom is very cute and I would be happy to visit it! But that little boy eating the soap - euww his face would put me off doing my mascara in the morning lol ♥

  53. I am not hating that wallpaper in there Kim~ I love wallpaper in a bathroom and it looks like it is perfect for your home! I know you will have so much fun at Haven!! Can't wait to hear all about it!

  54. I am actually kind of a fan of that wallpaper. Plus, I'm pretty sure I currently have that same toilet paper holder/towel holder combo in brass in my one and only bathroom in my house. ;)

  55. I'm going out on a limb here and saying it's not bad at all... adorable in fact. You made do with what you have and it turned into a charming little spot.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Even though the fixtures are outdated, you still have decorated it with flair. I love the sheep print. Is it an original painting or a print/copy?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Those were the days...... ah yes. But I think you have done a pretty good job at keeping it cute in there.
