Asking For Your Input

7.14.2013

I hope your weekend has been a relaxing one. We took a short road trip and now I have to get on the ball and make a decision about the paint color for the walls in the main body of our home. The painters will be here Tuesday and I know which way I am leaning, but I still am not 100% sure. I am so tired of painting colors on the walls and looking at them trying to make up my mind. Waiting two weeks for the painters to come I knew would drive me nuts and make me change my mind over and over. If we were painting ourselves instead of shelling out a lot of money I wouldn't be having such a hard time, but I can't make a mistake. I would love your input and I have marked the colors on the walls in a couple of the pictures. All paints are Benjamin Moore.

After buying about seven paint samples I am down to three. The white sand is actually left over from the sun room. The Manchester Tan and Natural Linen are very close, but the Natural Linen is a tad grayer and I think I like that.

This is the wall going from the great room into the breakfast room/kitchen. You probably can't see the difference much between Manchester Tan and Natural Linen. The white sand is very white in this light and I think it would probably be too white.

On this wall below the light switch is Natural Linen and the small spot around the switch is Manchester Tan.

This is just Natural Linen around the arched opening. This room gets a lot of light. Actually this whole open area gets a lot of light and this is taken on a cloudy day since the sun is hard to find around here for any length of time these days.

Now with the painters coming I have to clear all the walls. Fun fun. While taking some things down thoughts of change are popping in my head of course about what to put back where or leave out completely.

Last month I shared this cow art craft that I added to the guest room.

This is the farm scene painting that was over the bench on the stair landing and I kind of like it here, but I may paint the frame Luckett's Green instead of the green that is on there now.

where it normally hangs

I'm not sure this painting isn't too large for this spot.
Leave the cow art or use this farm scene with a different frame color?

So all of you very smart design savvy folks, please, I need your input.

Have a super week!

  1. Kim- wow--I'm the first to comment! yay me!! I love and have recommended both but I am really into gray right now (along with everyone else) so if natural linen is going more gray on your walls I would go in that direction. So fun getting the house painted! Good luck. Thanks again for all of your support!!!

  2. Kim, even before I read your comment, my first choice was the natural linen. The Manchester Tan is so close though. I agree that the white sand might end up being too white. Lovely neutrals to work with. We need to do a whole house repaint, but it's so much work. I know you will be thrilled to have this done. ~ Sarah

  3. I liked natural linen as soon as I saw the first pic!

  4. I like the Natural Linen. And I'd use the cow art over the bed.

  5. I am agreeing with the above two responses also. In fact even before I read your comment about each color, I thought Natural Linen looked the best! It's funny, I always think it will be fun when it comes time to choose paint but I usually have such a hard time! Good luck with your decision!

  6. Gosh, the Manchester Tan and Natural Linen are so close it's hard to tell which one would be better. It sounds like you're leaning towards a greyish neutral on your walls so either one would be fine. I would just go with your gut. It's usually right. Regarding the guest room change, I would paint the frame of the new artwork in a dark wood color (similar to the trunk beside the bed). That would pull your eye up and I would remove the Roosters For Sale sign above the trunk so it doesn't detract from the picture over the bed. If you felt like you needed to fill in the gap above the trunk, use a vase of wildflowers or something instead. That's just me though. I'm funny about too many different pictures on the wall. It doesn't give the eye a place to rest. Of course, I'm also seeing it in a picture and it may look different in person. Good luck with your painting next week! I know you must be so happy not to have to do it yourself.

  7. I too like the Natural Linen(Ben Moore paints are so good). As for the pic over the bed, I think the frame needs to be painted...not sure what color. Love the bed covering and the rooster sign and the trunk!

  8. Kim, I picked the Natural Linen from the first photo and continued to like it best in the other photos you showed. I know you'll be so glad to have this project completed soon! And since you asked, I like the cow art better over the bed!

  9. Wow. Both the tan and the linen look so nice. It will be hard to decide. I think the art above the bed looks nice, too. Because your headboard isn't a statement piece, I think you can have the larger framed piece above the bed....

  10. Love the natural linen - a hint of gray is perfect for walls!

Moo - I vote for the cow art!

  12. Colors change with each computer, but I love the Manchester Tan. Hugs, Marty

  13. I would pick the color that is a neutral . By that I mean not a warm tone or cool tone. That way it will go with everything you put with it.

  14. They are all pretty Kim but I like the Natural Linen best. My experience has been that paints that have the word "tan" in them tend to end up looking a bit dull. I agree the white sand is a bit light for your main living areas.
Can't wait to see what you choose! Love the picture!

  17. Natural Linen is my winner! Good luck!!

  18. The paint color is a tough choice Kim. We have White Sand in our Foyer, Family Room and Halls. Love it! Since you have it in your Sunroom, you know that it's a great background color and it goes with everything and competes with nothing. The Manchester Tan and the Natural Linen would look great too since you have good light in that room. I would probably go with the Natural Linen because I love a lighter paint. Good luck choosing! They are all great choices.

  19. I have been trying to pick out great room & foyer paint for 2 years, so I feel your pain. I don't like the white sand there at all. I vote for Natural Linen, but you couldn't go wrong with Manchester Tan.

  20. I like Natural Linen, Kim. I also like the haystack print on the landing and the cow art in the guest room, as they were before.

We started having our painting done about 5 or 6 years ago. It just got to be too much for us with the high ceilings and our ancient bones.:-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Natural Linen. I am in the same predicament! 3/4 of my house is one color, and it is starting to look dull. It is just a big commitment!!!

  22. Natural linen....but they are all pretty.

  23. Ooo I think I like the Natural Linen!

  25. Kim,
They are all beautiful but I am leaning towards the Natural Linen. It is going to be gorgeous which ever one you pick. These areas will feel new and refreshed and I know you love change so this will give you that. Good Luck. It is amazing what painting a room can do.

  26. My vote is the Natural Linen.

And please take no offense, but yes that picture is too large for that spot by the bed. (Sorry!)

    Don't fret! All is good!! : - )

  27. I can tell that the Natural Linen it a tad bit darker and that is my choice for you. Good luck and hope you are happy with whatever one you choose.

  28. I'd say flip a coin between natural linen and manchester since they are so similar. Good luck!

  29. Manchester tan without a doubt.

  30. Went to Benjamin Moore's site, and they say Manchester Tan is a neutral on the khaki side and always classic and elegant. I have Manchester Tan in my hall bath, and it is a very soft khaki-in your large home you won't get the intensity of Khaki because of your windows and walls. Personally I don't see a lot of difference between the the MT and Natural Linen, in fact Benjamin Moore has them on a card together, as being easily changed out. I think with all the beautiful reds, browns, and tans you have in your home the Manchester Tan would be very nice and wouldn't look pinky. Manchester Tan has a good undertone. Are your painters doing any of the other rooms? Good luck. I am sure it will be pretty!

  31. Love the natural linen. Just enough contrast for your white trim and I love the touch/hint of gray.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If you are ready for more of a change, I think that the white sand would be more noticeable. The Natural Linen is a good choice too and it looks like the favorite. A gray based neutral will be lovely. Two weeks! I would be flip-flopping too.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I read all the comments and it looks like the census is leaning to Natural Linen. I thimk it looks great in the samples (on my computer) but I would just caution that whatever colour you choose, make sure the undertone isn't pink-ish. You won't want swine walls lol. Looks like the Linen has more of a grey base.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'll throw in a vote for Manchester tan, but I know whichever you choose it'll be right and it'll be lovely, you have fabulous taste.

  36. Natural linen for sure. Gorgeous neutral that you will not tire of!

  37. I am different, I loved the existing color already ! LOL... My husband does our painting...and does a fantastic job. We just finished 3 rooms...it is a job to do.. I am sure yours will come out wonderful which ever you choose!

  38. I guess I'm the only one who likes the white sand. Hooray for having it done by someone else.

  39. Another vote for Natural Linen. :)

  40. I'm torn between natural linen and manchester tan but Im thinking that manchester tan will be darker in person than in photo so I go for natural linen. Good luck ! :)
p.s. : i love the current color of your walls already. is that eggshell?

  41. Natural Linen. Love the gray undertones!!

  42. Hmm.. I am having a hard time choosing between the Manchester Tan ( very close to what we have in some of our rooms) and the Natural Linen.
I like the new piece over the guest bed.
    Just my 2 cents..

  44. i have had both colours and the natural linen is the current colour of our master bedroom. i did find the manchester tan looks kind of blah on the walls though. i know everyone loves it but it ended up not being my favourite.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I like the natural linen especially if it has a hint of gray that you like! I love the big painting over the bed. Just seems to pull the room all together for me!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Natural Linen, Kim... absolutely!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. As soon as I looked the Natural Linen jumped out at me- I think you have been transitioning away from the warmer colors you used to use? If so, the linen kind of sets the base for a "cooler" palette. xo Diana

    ReplyDelete
  48. Love the Natural Linen right away.....use the cow art above the bed, the other is too large and too dark. The gray tone of the paint will complement the reds in your family room.

  49. Hah I was going to say Natural Linen but it looks like everyone else has beaten me to it!! Should look great!

  52. Ok so not like the last 50+ comments sealed the deal or anything... but for what it's worth, the Natural Linen was the first one that caught my eye. Good luck! Hugs, Holly @ coconutheadsurvivalguide

  53. Natural linen was my consistent choice throughout the pictures. You're smart to try it in so many locations! When I built my new home I loved my wall color from the old home's living areas so much that I had the painters (who painted in both homes, yikes, I understand the expense!) use it in the vaulted main areas of my new home. It doesn't look the same because of the huge difference in light between the homes and I like it less but it's too expensive to re-paint for such a trivial reason. So, lesson learned ... And you are doing it right! Good luck with your choice!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I like the Manchester tan. We had a color similar and just loved it. Easy to live with. As far as your painting goes , I like it in your hall. Looks perfect and interesting in that spot. Your bedroom could use something round above it. Maybe a mirror.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Natural Linen and the cow art in the bedroom. Have fun!

  56. I won't be any help at all.......I prefer the color that is currently on your walls! Warm and cozy. :}

  57. Natural Linen - definitely!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I too like the Natural Linen. As to the picture.....I LOVE IT! And, I love it over the bench so much I felt a heart jump! However, I feel you can pull off any place you put it. Love, love, love your style!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yup, I agree with the Natural Linen as well.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I agree with Natural Linen too. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hi Kim, Wow! You have a lot of comments to consider and it seems most like the Natural Linen. However, consider that the whole "gray tone" trend is just that...a trend. I would vote for Manchester Tan, which is a more timeless color. I've used it in several client's homes and it is a great neutral. I think you should sample a really large area of the color and look at it in both daylight and nigh time lighting before making your final decision. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Natural Linen gets my vote!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. i would vote to keep the existing color! It is so warm and inviting and coordinates with all your furnishings. But if you just HAVE to change the color, I'd be sure it was a more neutral color, or perhaps something with a warmer undertone (no pinks) to avoid that cold, lifeless feeling. Sometimes a gray tone feels lifeless, even in sunlight. As for the picture, I think it looks best in the stairway where it helps with that taller wall expanse. Whatever you choose to do I'm sure it will perfect for you, Kim!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I like Natural Linen! Love the picture over your bed too!

  65. We used to have a professional painting company and I have used both of these colours. We have Manchester Tan in my home. Manchester Tan is my preference since it's a bit "warmer" whereas Natural Linen tends to be a bit greyer. Natural Linen actually turns into a very neutral colour when it's on the walls and unless you have bright white trim, will look like an off-white. Many times when people were selling a home, Natural Linen was the choice of paints because it was so neutral. All that being said, both of them are nice.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I suck at picking out paint colors, so I will just say I had a lot of trouble with the shades of things going with our existing woodwork. Grays didn't seem to compliment the wood, and some beige's had the wrong undertones. I decided if I paint again I'll go with a form of white!

    ReplyDelete
  67. For almost four years my home has looked like there has been a paintball fight. I have chosen Manchester Tan for the walls and have been following your other colors for my bedrooms and kitchen. My vote is for Manchester Tan. I would keep the roosters in the kitchen.

    ReplyDelete
  68. really like the natural linen.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Kim, I think the almost evenly split votes show that either color will work. Stick with what your gut tells you. You have a beautiful home so trusting your instincts works for you. I have a question for you. Why do most decorators and folks on the decor blogs favor Benjamin Moore Paint so much? Obviously, the colors are gorgeous. But, what is it about BM paint that justifies the priciness of it?

    ReplyDelete
  70. I immediately felt the natural linen would be the perfect choice. I think I may have even found my perfect color as well! I was leaning toward BM Pale Oak myself but I really like that natural linen.

Natural Linen seems to be a perfect natural. If you have warmer colors and more tan colors, it works perfectly but if you put cooler colors and more grays up against it, it would still be beautiful.

Can't wait to see which you decide and how the finished product looks!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I love the Natural Linen! I might be a touch biased, though! We just used the same color in our guest room! It's gorgeous and has the perfect hint of gray than some of the other creamer neutrals. But, really, I don't think you could go wrong with any of your choices! LOVE them all! ;) Jesse @ Scout & Nimble

  73. I prefer the natural linen, too. It's a warm gray - and everything looks good against a warm gray. We mounted all our projects on warm gray board in design school. Good choice.

  75. It is all about the undertone! You have wood flooring, carpet and fabrics in those areas to consider as well as the light. That being said, you might go to Maria Killem's website. She is an expert in this matter, and before spending a boatload of cash and getting it wrong, it might be a good idea to consult an expert. She does online consults.

  76. I am way late giving my two cents since the painters come today. I vote Natural Linen. I am having a hard time choosing a new paint color for our main body as well. 1. It was painted Manchester Tan right after that post and any of my photos in any posts since then is that color. The great room, foyer and up the stairs is all the same color. I actually would like to paint it again in French Canvas this time. Just waiting a bit so hubby doesn't have a fit!

  85. Thank you Kim. I must say, I'm surprised you chose MT when so many people picked Neutral Linen (lol). Does it have a gray undertone at all or is it totally tan/beige? Thanks again!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I think it is more beige and it just depends on the light in my house. I love it on my fireplace wall because it stays the color I like in the light on that wall. In my foyer it gets very tan looking. I will eventually paint it once again.
