I Knew This Would Happen

7.22.2013

While there are home tours floating around blog land this week, my home is a mess.

I told y'all a week ago that I would have painters arriving today to paint. Well, since they were supposed to show up a week ago that gave Mr. Savvy time to think twice about what it was going to cost.

I was so afraid that was going to happen and then when he told me I was upset about it.

After 38 years of marriage and 38 years of painting everything ourselves I should have known it was too good to be true to think that I could just let someone else do it for us.

There were lots of holes to fill. Yes, y'all know I move things a lot.

I had to listen to him complain about how many holes there were. He is laying down on the floor cutting in in this photo.

I'm not sure what he was doing here. I didn't have holes all over this wall.

Once the new color started going on I was getting really excited. So glad the yellow toned color is gone.

The arrow shows the old color. It really shows just how golden it was. The new color is above.

The new color is very close to the color on the bookcases which is Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old White.

Here is Stubborn cutting in. If his back hurts him it isn't my fault. :)

Here is a glimpse of the new color. This is my view from the kitchen sink.
I am loving the new brighter feel of the whole space.

When I get to share pretty finished pictures I will share what color I used.

Well, I have the upstairs hall to finish today while he goes back to work.
GRRRRR

Have a super week!

  2. I like the lighter color. You should be able to treat yourself from all the money you saved right??

  3. I feel your pain, Kim!! I hate the process of repainting, but am always delighted with the result...when everything is cleaned up and put back. I really like the color you chose.

  4. OOOH! I love the new color! Give Mr. Savvy a hug for me and tell him that all of US appreciate his hard work...because now YOU get to fluff things up and work your magic and share it with us! (Don't mention the fact that you might have to make a few new holes in his pristine walls, though) Hugs, Kimberly

  5. I'm sorry. You were so close to having someone else do it. Oh well, on the bright side, and this looks really bright....it is a lovely color.

  6. I love the new color! it opens the whole space up! Damn those painters!!! I've had movers not show up 2x now so I feel your frustration!

  7. So, so pretty, Kim! I'd go shopping while waiting for that paint to dry! :)

  8. It's pretty much like that at our house. We are big DIY'ers and hate to pay someone to do something we can do ourselves. Besides that - my hubby is Mr. Perfectionist - so he usually does a better job than someone else would do.

    Enjoy the new paint!

  11. I'm with you Kim. I dream of hiring painters but haven't been able to talk my husband into it yet either and I've tried everything! The color is really going to look great though so I guess it's worth it.

  12. I really like the new color also! :-) In the end it will be all worth it. Good luck.

  21. Soooo close!!! Well, at least Mr. Savvy is a good helper and didn't make you do it all. It's going to look so nice! :)

  25. Loving the new color! What a project to take on. As soon as hubby realizes it requires him to get on an extension ladder he is all about hiring it out! LOL

  26. I love the new color. I am painting some rooms too and at first I wanted someone else to do it, but I have always done it so that is what I am doing. Of course your rooms are alot bigger than mine. Good Luck.

  27. I've always dreamed of hiring our tasks out but my hubby works in the construction field and knows too well the cost of everything. Poo.

  28. I love that beautiful new color!! So fresh and bright! Your place always sparkles though!! I hope Mr Stubborn's back doesn't hurt! At least his wallet won't be hurting.

  29. Knowing men, he'll claim he did it all by himself!

    Looks great.

  30. Hi Kimmie! Oh, the new color is so pretty! Now your hubby is a booger making you paint this big room. After all your dainty talented fingers needed a rest from painting all of your projects! :)

  31. I really LOVE the new color, Kim. MY Mr. Stubborn is really allowing someone to do our deck, hardscaping and pond!!!!!!!!!!! I am BEYOND amazed but also delighted:):) I hope you get to SHOP with the $$$$ you have saved:) Anxious to know what the color is since we will be painting in the Fall!!!! XO, Pinky

  33. I love our little cottage and don't ever plan on selling it. - doesn't mean we won't move somewhere else, but we will always keep the cottage. And one of the best parts is that its lack of stature makes it inexpensive to have someone else do the painting.

  34. Kim,
So sorry you are having to do the work yourselves, BUT it is going to be so fresh and crisp. I love the change!!

  37. Nice, lighter, brighter, fresher... But I know.. it does not help with the pain of painting... taping... We had an estimate and well, he did it himself. Sooo, I feel your pain. Now we are getting ready to do the 2 back rooms. 1 bedroom move and the other bedroom being turned into a sitting room. Sooo, yes, more painting in the near future. Base boards and trim are the worst!!!
Psssttt!! Plan a nice massage and spa day , you did save money. Just a thought :-)
    Big hugs, Gee

  39. Cant wait to see what color you chose. I think I am heading to SW for some samples. I want to get our living room done before the in laws head this way in a few weeks.

  40. It's going to be gorgeous, Kim; just like everything you do. Peggy

  41. Bahaha! That sounds just like my husband! Well, the new paint color looks great! It looks as though we have the same fire place mantel. Mine is just plain white. What color did you paint yours? I'm digging the red too. I love red but I don't have a lot of it in my living room. I might need to change that up a bit.

  42. The new color looks fabulous and so....clean! I was thinking that there would be more money for you to spend on goodies when you go to France! Maybe that was what he was thinking???

  43. Hang in there, Kim! It's looking goooood :) Looking forward to seeing you at Haven!

  44. LOVE the new colour....bright yet creamy and a perfect backdrop for your things. I hate painting too, but think of it as extra money for France :)

  45. I was thinking about the Mr.'s back when you said you were painting. So many high spots and trim but it will be all worth it when it is finished. Maybe you can buy yourselves something nice with the savings.

  46. I love the new color. I can see how it changes the light. You will see a change in the lighting for your photos.

  47. Lovely color, it will look fantastic, I'm sure.
I understand you are tired after 38 years of painting by yourself but try to feel lucky to have a DIY'er at home...and he likes painting! "Mr Tazas" does several things at home but hates painting, he always prefers to hire painters and I like painting and always try to convince her...LOL
    Besos!

Nice and clean and bright and happy.

Even if it is difficult, it is GOOD...and just think- hard as it is, the money saved? Imagine how and where you can spend it, whoo hoo! WIN WIN!!

  53. Ohhhh how I love the new color! WOnderful choice. Let the guys complain...they know we'll shower them with love when they've completed the job. :)

  55. Boy, I can sure empathize. It's looking great, though, and in 6 months (or less) all this will be forgotten!

  56. I feel your pain. My Stubborn is the same way. I call him Mr. Squeaky. After almost 38 years, two heart attacks, and this spring having spinal fusion, he FINALLY is starting to realize he MIGHT need help sometimes. But even so, I want to slap him upside the head sometimes. ;)
Lucky for me my son in law is a painter - if he ever has time, I could use a freshening up around here. Took him a year to paint my master bath, and I think he accidentally used the master been. paint - very similar color - but I ain't gonna knock it! :0)
    MEN!

  57. Too funny Kim! You must be exhausted! I love your new color--much more toned down and not so yellow. I have the same situation in my house, in the kitchen, family room, etc. It's BM's Dijon and I want to tone it down, but just can't decide on a color. The problem is my trim is so dark and I'm not painting it! Hey, do you hire out?
It will all be worth the effort. If I were you I would be in a hot bath right now! Lol! ~Delores

  58. I used to do all the painting myself and did a very good job. Last November I hired someone and I am kicking myself! My white trim is peeling and the paint is uneven. I learned my lesson.

    ReplyDelete
  59. We've always done the painting, except when we had the basement remodeled. With "new construction" I didn't want to do it all and work too. I don't envy y'all doing all that painting. We need to really do some upstairs. Hope the painting goes quickly.

  60. Sorry to hear you had so much aggravation, but the new look is so pretty! I have a golden color in my living/dining room, and I feel I need to lighten it up, too.

  61. Kim...I love the new color...its going to look great!

  62. You're lucky he's a good painter! I have to do all the painting myself or I'll have drips down the walls and missed spots. I leave the outdoor painting to him. The neighbors will tell him if he missed a spot or two.

Your new color is looking good! I can hardly wait to paint over my gold colored living room walls!

    ReplyDelete
  63. So funny, Kim! I know it isn't the way you wanted things to happen, but at least he's helping you. lol I'm soooo ready to get rid of the golden tones on the walls in my house, but sadly it isn't going to happen anytime soon. :(

  64. Awww crap! I was so excited that someone I talked too (even tho I don't know you in real life) was actually going to be able to sit back and enjoy the Pro's doing it....I am so sorry...Well, look at it this way....Hubs can have a really great bowl of cereal for dinner and you use some of that "savings" to go shop...It is going to look great tho, but right now I feel like that might be small compensation, lol

    ReplyDelete
  65. What an awesome hubby you have! Let him go shopping with the money saved!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I am loving the new paint color, and am dying to know what it is. I want to paint my family room, but am having a hard time choosing a color. I dont have white trim which makes it all that more difficult. What color do you use with a brown trim? Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  67. MEN, lol! Actually, I'm sure that your husband is going to tell you to have fun buying even MORE goodies in France with all of that money you saved by *DIY-ing* it! The new color is beautiful ... look forward to seeing more!

  68. What a gorgeous color - I love the fresh new look! Having somebody come in and paint would be a dream come true. I have a feeling we will always do it ourselves too. :)

  69. Mr. Savvy is indeed a "go getter".
So much work but a job well done.

  70. I feel your pain...but it looks fantastic. So bright! While the paint is drying...I suppose you could do some retail therapy since you saved all that money! ;)

  71. I feel your pain, Kim. I am heading over to paint at the new "old" house that we just bought and at 63 and 68 yrs. old we are still doing our own painting. Argh. Guess I will be painting from a rocking chair at 80!!!
Love the new color. What is it?

  73. Hi Kim - First of all... LOVE the new paint. Great choice and it really brightens up the space. And second... you saying your "house is a mess" is like Marion at Mustard Seed last week saying her "house is a mess" with one crumb on the floor. Your home is absolutely stunning even in the middle of all of the painting! I don't know how you do it. And PS - tell Hubby to be careful on the ladder. Hugs, Holly @ coconutheadsurvivalguide

  75. Looks fantastic - love the new color! Kudos to you and your hubby for doing all the work yourselves. :-)

  76. I am so sorry to hear what happened and I can understand the aggravation you must feel after getting everything out of the way for the painters to do it, only to be told its not going to happen that way. Oh well, if it's any consolation, just remind yourself of the money you are saving and also the possibility that he is doing a better and more thorough job than they would have done! ...And that's worth every penny!

  77. This sounds like my house. My husband would never pay someone to do something he can do...even if he can't walk because of his back for weeks after. We have a huge, huge tree in the front yard that has to be shaped and trimmed. He insisted he was going to do it and I threw a fit. Can you imagine him on a propped up ladder with a chain saw? He finally gave in and we are waiting for the tree guys to fit us in. I am afraid I will leave the house and come home to find him in the tree!

  78. Kim,
I am trying to follow you on Feedly. It says I am following you there and yet your posts never show up... which is weird. I finally realized it had been too long since I seen a post from you and came to your blog directly. Is there something you need to do with Feedly so people can follow you there on that reader.. I'm stumped? Marcy

  79. I love the new color! But of course, I loved the old color too. With your decorating talent, I think it would look nice in just about any color though. But it's all about what makes you happy, and sometimes no matter how much we loved a color to begin with, it's just time for a change. And you know how I am about hiring out....but I suppose if I had already had it in my head that someone else was going to do it for me, I would have been disappointed too. I know between the two of you it's going to look fabulous. Can't wait to see the finished photos!

  81. That's the difficult thing about being a diyer and hiring someone to do something for you...you have to wait on them! We had to wait 2 or 3 weeks because our painters were behind, but they finally showed up and did the job well. Mr. Savvy is doing a great job and your new color looks fantastic! Can't wait to meet you next week at Haven :)
