My French Purchases

10.06.2013

I am not good at waiting. Nope, never have been good at waiting for something new to arrive or in this case some very old things. I took pics along the way with my iphone so I could remember some of them until they get here.

I had a few things on my short list to find and I did find all those things except one.

The main thing on my list was a French farm table and boy did I find a beauty.

Just look at those beautiful chunky legs. just excuse the dust

Look how thick the top is.

She has a wonderful old drawer in both ends with an iron handle.

Vendu means sold in French. Yep, VENDU to me!
Oh, and it comes with a leaf that attaches at each end which is very rare. So this baby will seat 12.

This beauty wasn't on my list, but when I saw her I couldn't stop staring. This was in the same store.

Just look at her scrumptious inlaid top and those little buckles don't bother me at all. It just shows she is old and has developed a few wrinkles like me.

Love her scalloped skirt. So dainty and pretty.

And another "sold" sticker. Mine all mine.

This large buffet wasn't on my list, but it was gorgeous and an unbelievable price. It is 44" tall by 51"wide. This picture does not do this piece justice. This was in a huge place stocked full of furniture and accessories and smalls of all types. I could have spent hours in here.

I also wanted a few confit pots and I found two like this one and much better prices than here. Of course I do understand why things are priced the way they are here now. By the time you figure in shipping and mark up for profit they do get pricey.

A couple of demijohns were purchased and they are called demijohns as our hosts did confirm. This amber color is a little harder to find and this one is huge.

This chair wasn't on my list, but I loved its shape and it is quite sturdy and comfy to sit in. I don't know why chairs jump out at me. This will replace the one that I could never get shipped that I bought in Connecticut last October.

Alain took us by an auction house where we could place bids on any items we saw. I placed a bid on this lot of two dog paintings and WON!

At the end of our visit in Normandy we went by Alain's warehouse where we gathered
all our smalls together. This is my stash on the table.

I have some missing photos of a large scale with a marble top, a nice balance with all the weights, two long benches, a couple grain sacks, vintage hand towels and some very old pharmacy bottles.
I am probably forgetting something, too.

Now, I am just waiting for the stuff to ship and the boat to come in.

When our stuff arrives at the port in Charleston, S.C. it will mean a trip to Charleston.
I love Charleston so another trip is no problem at all.
:)

We're off to celebrate Mr. Savvy's oldest sister's 88th birthday this afternoon.

Have a fabulous day!

  2. Oh my goodness - Kim you went to town! Those are lovely purchases. Half the battle is getting things safely packed and shipped, so you were fortunate. I can't wait to see it all in situ.

  3. Gorgeous items that you bought, Kim. If the patina of the farm table is half as pretty in real life as it is in the photo it will be a stunner. The wait may seem long but you will have lots of time for finding spots for everything.

  10. Wow! You found A LOT of stuff! I forsee a major truck needed to take to Charleston to retrieve it all. I love all of the furniture pieces you found. I bet you've been deciding on what you're going to part with in your home to make room for all of these lovelies. You will cherish those pieces since they came from overseas, I'm sure!

  14. I'm in love with both tables too Kim! Soo gorgeous!!!!Your a real serious shopper, I hope you'll give us tips as to how we can save on shipping and how to ship etc. when your in a foreign country! I've never bought anything so big from abroad, but if it's reasonable, I might do it too! Thanks for sharing your great finds again Kim and hope to hear about the 'technical' aspect of buying abroad soon!

  15. Great finds, I loved it all. Sitting here drooling. While you are here in Charleston, I can give the the name of a great antique store in town. The owners go abroad and bring containers of French and English antiques back. I have several pieces from the store. Again great buys.

  21. It's just amazing the numbers of things you found in one trip. I'm in love with that side round table and wish I had seen it before you did!!! I have a thing for armchairs especially those like the one you found, that we call "fauteuil de grand-père" (grandpa's chair).

  22. Charleston is one of our favorite places and a yearly place to visit for us. In fact, I would rather go to Charleston than France! The shipping ports are very interesting.

Now you will have to do some entertaining with that new table!

  35. That farm table is awesome, as are the demi-johns & confit pot. I just bought a green demi-john that has dimpled glass just like that, so it makes me wonder if mine is from France. I know you must hate the thought of going to Charleston to pick that stuff up! ((NOT!)) And my husband thought I was crazy for going back down to Alabama to pick up a piece of furniture...glad I'm not the only one. I don't know how you stand the wait!

    ReplyDelete
  36. you must be antsy waiting for all these goodies to get over here. I'm excited to see what you have planned for that fabulous table!!

  45. Hi Kim, You made some wonderful purchases! We have such similar tastes, which is probably why I keep coming here! You'll enjoy all of these goodies and they will remind you of a wonderful trip! Now, as far as Charleston, is concerned, I've only been there in July. It was so humid and hot, that I couldn't move! I'm sure fall and spring are wonderful there!
    Take care,
    Barbara

  46. I like the 2nd mantel better, too, but they are both pretty & fall-ish. I was in Home Goods this morning & saw the prettiest cream & indigo (betw/ a royal and navy) buffalo checked wool throw that reminded me of you. If I had room on my phone, I would have taken a picture to send you....it had your name all over it.

  49. My husband would like to "NOT" thank you right about now. Ever since you had said you were going I told him it was on my bucket list as well. I'm going to Normandy next summer to see my grandfather's grave there, he died in WWII and I will be first of family to visit. My daughter graduates high school in June and a 3 week trip to Europe is her present...but I want to go do what you did separately LOL if I can. What a dream come true and those goodies are FABULOUS..can't wait to see pics of them in your house..you totally scored!
