More Dogs in the House

11.18.2013

A couple weeks ago my mom and I went to my sister's to go out together for lunch to celebrate my sister's birthday which is on Halloween, btw. After lunch we went to our favorite antique mall, The Queen Of Hearts in Alpharetta. I had not been shopping their in months since I was saving up to go shop in France this past September. I had no intention of finding anything to buy, but you know how that goes.

I was just walking and browsing the booths quickly and then there-it-was! Y'all know I love decorating with dog prints and other dog items and y'all know I have a slight sick obsession for lamps.

So when I spied this beauty I gasped and then I stared at it and pondered it and wondered should I or shouldn't I. Well, of course I should.

I love the lamp and the shade, but still not real sure about the crystal finial. The tag on it said it is from the 30's or 40's. I just wonder if it is too gawdy. :)

I replaced the tall brass Stiffel lamp that was here with this dog lamp for now. I may end up moving this to the foyer after by buffet from France gets here. For now I like it in the sitting room.

While at the Country Living Fair Kristen and I spied this dog trophy right about the same time and she knew I would want it.

The pumpkins have been removed and I just added a stack of books and an antler to this silver tray and placed the trophy on top for added height.

And the inscription reads Indiana State F. H. ASS'N 1949 Best Opposite Sex.
What?? What does that mean? We had a good laugh about that.

Oh, and the cutest dog of them all.

Have a wonderful week!

  21. The lamp looks beautiful! And the trophy, I love it!

  22. The Trophy is for the Indiana State Fox Hound Association, no longer holding field trails. Your trophy was awarded to the best dog or bitch of the opposite sex of the Best of Breed. For instance and this is how it generally goes, but not always..... The Best of Breed dog was a dog or male, the Best of opposite Sex would therefor be a bitch or female. For those of us who show bitches it can sometimes feel like a consolation prize or always the bridesmaid, never the bride. HKH

  24. Hahahah, I have no idea what Best Opposite Sex means, but it makes me smile.

  25. Glad you didn't leave that lamp behind. It's a fabulous find. I'd switch out the crystal finial for a simple brass one, perhaps a ball to mimic the little ball feet. Love the trophy too. ;-)

  26. Glad you saw the lamp first. I'd have had to "arm wrestle" you for it. :) I'm with Sarah. The crystal finial is pretty, but I'd change it for a brass one, too. Great dog trophy.

  27. Ha! Kim, just read the comment above! Now we know what the "Best Opposite Sex" means on the trophy! I knew someone out there had to have the answer :) Love the lamp...it's perfect for the room! I wouldn't have hesitated for a second.

  28. Well, glad Fagsworth knew what that was all about- otherwise-who knows where your mind would have gone?;>) Great find on that lamp, Kim. You are right about the crystal finial, though. I don't know that it is too guady but I don't think ti was probably the original finial. It isn't in keeping with the art work on the lamp-at least I think that's what it is. Hope you have a great night- Just finally catching up around here-

  29. I am the same way with dog items and lamps! My attic has many of my old lamps to prove it. ; ) Absolutely love the dog lamp....such a great find.

  32. It's certainly a beautiful and unusual lamp. You and I have the same obsession I suppose. Judy helped me cart about five lamps to the shed yesterday because I can't cram any more in the tiny closet. They come and go. You know how it is.

  41. You have definitely "Gone to the Dogs". The lamp…Fab! I personally would replace the finial, I am sure you will find another use for that dreamy finial. That trophy is so cute. I wonder, if back then, they didn't want to engrave "b***h on the trophy, maybe!
    Have a blessed week, Ginger

  42. Good for you for making the purchase! I think you've made it work beautifully in your home :)

  43. I LOVE your gorgeous lamp! I'm with others about the finial -- it's lovely BUT. I don't think it was original to the lamp. Trade it out for a brass or stone (in a shade that compliments your lamp such as onyx or limestone) or even faux tortoise or ivory. I know you'll find something WONDERFUL as you always do.

  44. I am so jealous, I love this soooo much!!!! You guys find the best stuff. We have garbage here and it is harder for me to do the craft show and shopping circuit. I may have to swallow my pride and get a wheelchair for those events so I can go.

  48. Love the trophy...."opposite" of WHAT?, I wonder! Cute lamp too...I don't think that you have a sick obsession with lamps at all...you're merely a "lamp enthusiast"...that's what I'm telling my friends about my "enthusiasm" for chairs! I'll bet that you can't wait for the container from France! xo

  49. Lamps and shoes Kim! I have a bit of a fondness for those luminaries as well. I am just waiting for Mr. Rosemary Lane to clock me over the head with the next one I bring home!!!

  50. Kim - Total left turn - what are the dimensions of the green hanging shelf in your dining room? Did you make (remake) it?

    1. I don't have a green hanging shelf in the dining room. Maybe you are talking about the one hanging in a little hallway. Did not make it.
