A New Vintage Mirror

1.26.2014

When I was in France I did not buy an antique mirror. In fact I don't remember seeing many old mirrors except at the Paris Flea Market and those were way more than I wanted to spend. After buying a rather large buffet over there, that I will share soon, I knew the mirror in the foyer was not going to work with it. So.......what to do? Hunt for a new one, of course.

Since the buffet is very tall, actually comes up to my chest, I thought a round mirror would work better. I wanted an antique one preferably. Maybe a gold tone. Maybe with some details. And I definitely wanted the mirror glass to be old and spotty and worn. Well, I lucked up and found this one at Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta last October.

The lady who had the booth I found this mirror in was also the owner of this mirror so she was able to tell me about it. She said she and her husband had downsized from a larger home and of course some things had to be let go and this mirror was one of them.

She said it dates back to the 1920's and it is really showing its age. You can see how the finish has worn off and I love the fact that the glass is very spotty.

Lots of pretty details.

She said most folks would not buy this mirror because of the cloudy antiqued mirror and that is what I wanted. This was a steal at $80.

Here you can see how foggy looking the mirror is. The frame is solid wood and it is quite heavy. I kept this stored away until my French antiques got here. I was thrilled that my vision for this mirror was a good one.

You can see the mirror and buffet that was replaced here.

Thanks so much for all the rug love yesterday. Didn't know I would get that much response for a rug.

Have a fabulous Sunday!

  6. I'm in love with this mirror! The shape is fantastic and I love the age showing. My favorite thing about older mirrors is when they start to get cloudy and show their age. :)

  12. I love it foggy and all. We were at a party over the weekend and someone had a full wall sized mirror. I think they purposely made it foggy. Loved it.

  15. Oh my gosh, Kim - you totally SCORED - that is an amazing treasure! LOOOOOVE it!

Now, any chance you can take a long far back shot so we can actually see how it looks with the buffet dimensions-wise? I was disappointed not seeing a pic from afar. I know it is danged near impossible to get a decent shot with reflections, etc like that - feel free to just email me. I am dying to see.

    Well done, looks amazing.

  16. Your vision was PERFECT!!! I love it, it reminds me of a mirror my Grandmother had. I always wonder what in the world happened to all her things??? So sad that I have nothing but a few glasses from her, oh and a gorgeous cocktail ring. Your home gets better and better. You have the midus touch, Kim.

  33. $80??? What a steal! It's got such character, and the cloudy glass just adds to its appeal. It looks great. I have a similar mirror - it was my husband's grandmother's, so it is OLD and very heavy. We had it hanging up for awhile, then replaced it with something else. I keep hoping to have an "aha" moment as to where to hang it.

I read your rug post but not the comments. I have to say the larger size is soooooo much nicer.
