My Decorating Weakness

2.13.2014

Yes, while many of you think that decorating comes easy to me there are a few things that don't come easy and the main one is styling bookcases.

Especially these bookcases. I don't know why they intimidate me, but they do. After we moved in I just filled them with cheap knickknacks just to fill them up. I couldn't stand them being bare and I couldn't afford nice new things.

Now, I fill them with antiques and collections as I obtain them, but still at good prices. I always try to find good deals.

When my friend Shirley of Housepitality Designs was here visiting we tackled these bookcases and she did a great job.

I love the mix of textures with the old books, boxes, ceramic and silver.

I shared my French auction wins with you and this one sits on the bottom shelf of the bookcase to the right of the fireplace. I did have my house painting here, but the dog etching fits the space and room better. The house print looked like it belonged in an office so I moved it.

The other side has the dreaded television that we of course have to have.

And yes the dreaded antlers that some of you don't like.  I love them leaning in this basket and against the books and silver. The photographers loved this room, too and didn't even restyle the bookshelves. Shirley did good. They love antlers and collect them, too. Gary asked me where I get mine.

I did make a couple of small changes here and there. One was the addition of the box on top that I bought last month at a monthly flea market. I collect these old wooden boxes and it was a great price.

We had a black urn that I switched to this silver one that I forgot I had.

I guess when I am ready to change these up Shirley will have to come back for a visit.
K, Shirley?

What is your decorating weakness?

We had lots of sleet and snow yesterday and stayed hunkered down inside. Hopefully the thaw out will start today.

Have a safe and warm day!

  2. Oh, it was fun styling the bookcases with you...it is easy when you have great things to work with!!!...So glad the photographers liked it too!

  3. Love how you have them styled...especially the books and boxes. The TV is just an inevitable thing we all need to work with. I hear you on being intimidated by decorating certain areas. Mine is my mantel. It is massive and the placement in our living room makes absolutely no sense.

The bookshelves look great. I love the way the book cases frame out the fireplace. You and Shirley make a killer team. You with your great treasures and Shirley with her beautiful vignettes. It looks awesome.

  7. Kim, what great team work! I have to say, I love working with bookshelves, don't like working with paintings or pictures on walls! That intimdates me to no end. Once I start, I'm okay, but that first one going up, yikes! I just love what you all did with those fabulous books, just awesome. Books make such a difference, don't they? Now, when can y'all head to my house??
    Stay warm!

  8. Hey Shirley, come to my house...please! Wow the bookcases look wonderful...rich with layers of interesting treasures. My weakness is definitely bookcases. The other problem is an awkward floor plan in my living room. The furniture is lined against the wall. I know that is not good.

  9. Kim, I think you have done a great job with the bookcases! Sometimes having a friend sharing her eye is all you need if you are feeling a little unsure about things...It happens to me all the time...I have a very long fireplace mantle in our family room which poses a real challenge for me...hope to share it soon, N.xo

  10. You shelves look stunning, Kim! Shirley did a fabulous job. I think book shelves are hard to style and keep from looking cluttered with just stuff. Love the variety of your wonderful antique collections displayed with your artful old books.

  11. Your shelf displays have character and lots of interest. Love your leather books. I'm on the hunt for some, but haven't found any bargains. $20-30 and up in my area. Maybe I'll get lucky at the flea market.

  13. Looks great Kim, but I sure know what you mean! I shared yesterday how overwhelmed I feel FINALLY moving things into the great room. What to bring in, where to put it, and then there's that big black box that has to be incorporated! So nice Shirley was able to help you with the bookshelves. Wish you lived close, I would sure ask you over to help with this room!
    Blessings,

  14. I think bookcases are so hard, there's a fine line between it looking too cluttered. Yours look fabulous and how fun to get to do them Shirley!!

  15. Shirley did a fabulous job decorating the bookcases. I love the antlers and a deer didn't have to die for you to get them as they come off the deer naturally as they age - so I don't know why anyone would find that offensive - anyway - I like them. LOL! I have been looking for some for myself. I like the variety of items on your bookcases and the colors that come off of the books. It is fun to style bookcases. Enjoy.

  17. Oh Kim they look wonderful. Shirley did a beautiful job. But I am sure it was not hard with all your collections. Wish I could say what my favourite was but, I can't choose.
I too have a hard time with shelves, cases... I tend to over do them. So now I place items, and then edit like mad!

  18. Your shelves look fabulous Kim. My decorating weakness is kitchen counter tops. I don't really have enough space to make them look decorated, so my kitchen looks very utilitarian.

  19. Kim, I must've missed a post...is that a new rug in your family room? I love it! Did you purchase it online? I need something like this for my living room.

  20. Shirley has a great idea for putting things together- but the truth is, Kim, you have great taste, too, and could do it up perfectly, too. Anyway, it looks great. I guess my biggest weakness is the surety of mixing and matching patters with various colors int hem. xo Diana

  21. The bookcases look beautiful, Kim! My biggest weakness is editing...I like to put too much stuff out...

  22. My weakness is not having enough bookcases. I've built wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling bookcases before, but there's never enough room for all the books!

  23. Oh yes, thought dreaded TVs! I feel your pain! The shelves look good.....antlers and all!

  24. I love love love those vintage books.. and.. olive vessel? Let's see what I'm learning...lol... You do NOT have a weakness, Kim, of decorating in any way. You oughta be doing lifestyles of the rich and famous homes... seriously, you're that good.

  25. I am so glad I finally got this, I had to shut down and reboot my computer t get all of the pictures. Shirley doo GREAT! And I am sure she would love another visit! Your shelves look amazing, you have such beautiful things. I LOVE the antlers. My BIL sent me a whole box of them along with some turtle shells. Would LOVE to have a LARGE turtle shell. Hope you thaw out. We got 14 inches, then it stopped at noon and tonight we should get 3-6 mORE:( UGH!

  26. The bookcases look great. Very interesting mix of things. I know what you mean about the television. I decorate around mine too. My decorating weakness, editing a room. My house is small and I hate that the furniture in my living room has to line the walls. Also my fireplace is a corner one that is a challenge to decorate because it either looks too sparse or too cluttered. I can't make up my mind on what style I am so I buy what I like and go with it. My home is small so it makes it more of a challenge.

  27. I love how your bookcases look! Shirley really did an outstanding job. It helps that you have a nice selection of books and accessories to choose from too.

My weakness is quadrupeds! LOL! Other than dogs and cats, though, I have a thing for chairs. Too many chairs at this point. LOL!

  30. You and Shirley did a fantastic job. I love to style bookshelves, and just today two different friends asked if I would help them style their shelves. Well, YES! It's even more fun to play the treasures that belong to someone else.

  31. I have the same one: styling bookshelves. I would think yours would be hard due to the curved top. That would intimidate me! Yours looks great though!

  33. That Shirley did good! Kim, what do you think about painting your bookcases to match your fireplace? Too much of a good thing? Tired of painting? Looks good..leave me alone?

  34. The house we are buying has a whole wall of shelves... I'm a little intimidated by it, but will be referencing some of your ideas!! ;) You know we share a love of silver, antlers, and old boxes... most of mine boxes of silver or silverplate. LOL! Thanks for always being a source of inspiration when I need it. blessings ~ tanna

  35. How fun! And the result is lovely too! Isn't it great to have a friend who likes to come and "play?" I moved away from a long time dear friend with whom we would tweak each other's houses. I really miss it. You have such wonderful taste Kim. It's such a pleasure to see your latest tweaks.
