When Kim invited me a few weeks ago to share in her fabulous "My Favorite Room" series, you could have literally knocked me over with a hummingbird's feather! I have been a huge fan of Kim's style and her blog for over three years now, and I am absolutely thrilled to be here today to share my favorite room, our newly redecorated
Our home is a mid-century expanded Cape Cod which has 3 bedrooms on the second floor and one rather large bedroom on the first. When our two children came home in 2005, (we adopted Michael and Grace from the country Kazakhstan) Mr. Rosemary Lane and myself decided to move our bedroom upstairs so to be close to our little bambini. As it turned out I spent plenty of time decorating and redecorating their rooms but our bedroom was pretty much ignored, and as a result it kind of became the "catch-all" for the entire house. You know, someone would ask "Where should I put this?" and the answer would be inevitably be "Just toss it in our room". Oh and did I mention how dreary it was...really really dreary and completely uninspired. Finally, just after Christmas this past year I began to hunt down ideas for our master bedroom, so I did a lot of internet searching. The inspiration for our master makeover came from this photo of a garden themed bedroom I found on line which belongs to House Beautiful.
I fell in love with the color of the room, "New Leaf" by C2 Paints, and was tickled about the fact that the furniture was a dark wood like my bedroom furnishings. The idea of pairing orange with this soft green would never had occurred to me, but once I saw the two colors together I was totally hooked.
So without further ado, here is our newly decorated master bedroom as inspired by
Oh gosh, this room is my favorite for so many reasons, where do I begin? Well the first reason which pops to mind is that my 27 year old bedroom set looks and feels almost new to me. This is due to all of the beautiful color added to the room in the way of bedding and wall color.
In an effort to keep the budget low for this redo (and to keep the hubby happy) I recycled items I already had in my home to both furnish and to accessorize the room. For example the desk lamp was a Walmart purchase and originally was gold. It received a nice coat of white paint and a new shade.
The desk itself was a yard sale find from a couple years ago. I paid $15 for the piece and all I really had to do was refinish the top. The desk doubles as a nightstand for Mr. Rosemary Lane!
Lucky for me I was able to find a few clearance items to embellish the room and infuse the "feel" of the House Beautiful room into this space. Remember the picture of the horse over the bed in the House Beautiful room?
Well I didn't have a picture but I did find this ceramic horse for only $10 over at Home Goods. Yes this did make me very "Home Goods Happy"!
I am also extremely happy about my newly created mommy nook, a place where I can sit and relax with one of my many magazines!
I swiped the little green chair from another room and paired it with a roadside find table that was painted and distressed. At some point I'd like to recover the chair with a coordinating fabric, possibly in a striped or checked pattern. Or, if I can afford it, purchase fabric in the same pattern as my valances.
One element of the room which I absolutely LOVE in the new area carpet. This was my big splurge for the bedroom makeover. Now I ask you, how could anyone resist the idea of stepping out of bed each morning onto a white fluffy cloud?
I also wanted to make sure to include one or two rustic items in the room's decor. So in addition to my chippy table next to the chair, the second nightstand is comprised of a another roadside find table along with a vintage suitcase on top to provide both height and interest.
The four botanical prints flanking the bed were purchased for my very first apartment. I found champagne color frames at Michael's craft store for just $10 each, so I grabbed all 4 and was able to re-frame my beloved old prints.
The night table was adorned with family photos.
To mimic the beautiful trellis seen through the doorway in the inspiration room, I decided to take on the task of stenciling the entire ceiling! It took awhile to do, I won't lie, but in the end I think it is the star of the room!
Well with all that being said, the absolute number one reason as to why this is my favorite room is because it is so cheery and happy, therefore it makes me feel cheery and happy. No matter how rainy, snowy and/or cloudy it is outside, this room always makes it feel like it is a gorgeous spring day!
