Favorite Room....Maison de Pax

6.27.2014

Hi Savvy Southern Style readers! I'm Rachel from Maison de Pax, and I cannot tell you how honored I am that Kim has asked me to share with you today. I am so glad to be here and thrilled to share with you my favorite room! I considered sharing my living room or my daughter's new nursery with you today because those are the most "finished" spaces in my home (and I do love them!)... but if I'm really being honest, our attic is my favorite room. Hands down.

It is still VERY much a work in progress, but to fully appreciate this space, you have to see what it looked like just four months ago.

  attic before

One of the reasons we bought this home two years ago was the potential that the attic possessed. It already had a full staircase leading up to it, and it was big. Beyond that, though, a LOT of vision was obviously needed. I think that's one major reason that this is my favorite room: it was our vision and hard work that
made it beautiful.

We hired someone to frame the space and put in a skylight, which gives the most gorgeous natural light - another reason I love this room. Photographing projects in this room, like my Reclaimed Wood BottleCarrier, is just a dream

This stunning carrier made from reclaimed wood holds 6 antique milk bottles and makes the perfect rustic yet elegant piece of decor!

But my favorite feature about this room is definitely the whitewashed planks. I give a full tutorial here if you're interested. I love the texture, the light, and the depth that the whitewashed planks provide.

They inspired me to makeover this bedside table in white, as well. I'm just loving the light, airy simplicity of it all.

Another highlight of the room is the stairwell. As you might expect from an attic, the stairs are fairly steep and narrow. Rather than close them in, we decided to frame one side with a bookcase which we made from cedar we found in the attic.

I still need to paint the actual stairs, but I love how the bookcase adds function and interest to what could have been a rather claustrophobic and boring space.

The closet door also adds character to the room.

I especially love the gorgeous patina on the door knob.

This room blends elegance with a certain rustic quality... just the balance I love.

I haven't decided what to do with the back half of the room. It currently houses an old desk, which has quickly been taken over by projects I'm working on... I love working in this quiet, romantic space.

And, of course, I have about 150 other things on my list I'd like to do in this space... But for now, I am blown away by how much we accomplished (especially given that I was 7 months pregnant when we started this project!), blessed by the beauty and serenity of the space, and giddy with the dreams of what it could become: a haven for me, a place to create and inspire, a retreat for guests, a romantic escape for my children to read and dream... In short: my favorite room.

  10. My Grandmother made her attic into a bedroom much like this in her home. It was where my cousin and I would play for hours on end. Your style is so beautiful, and I adore the patriotic touches!
