It's A Love Hate Relationship

6.21.2014

I'll never forget the day when I was around seven years old and was at the beach at St. Simons Island, where we lived for three years, with my family and I was having a good time out in the water when all of a sudden I started feeling severe pain all over my feet and was trying my best to get away from whatever it was hurting me. See, there was a current where I had gotten out to and I was trying to get out of it, yes, I was a good swimmer even at seven, but there was a big batch of rocks with barnacles all over it and my little feet were getting cut up.

This stuff is sharp. Very very sharp and it will cut you. I did finally get away from it though.

Even though this may bring back good/bad memories for me I think it is pretty to look at.

When I stumbled upon this piece at HomeGoods and flipped it over and saw the ridiculously low price it had to come home with me as an addition to my summer decor.

So it got placed on the stack of books on the bamboo tray in my great room along with the other accessories like my magnifying glasses and some tiny vintage fern prints. I think ferns say summer, too. I know we have several around our property.

This textured candle from the Pottery Barn Outlet sits in a wicker wrapped jar that I have had for years and have used it as a vase or candle holder.

Mr. Savvy noticed this piece the other day and asked if it was real? I said I don't think so especially since it was priced so low. I told him it is probably resin.

When you flip it over you can kind of tell it is resin, but hey if it looks like the real deal then that is great.

So even though I hated this stuff when it cut my little feet up I now love to look at it on display in this summer vignette.

For only $7.99 I bet you would have bought it, too!

Happy first day of summer

  2. It looks very summery Kim. I grew up on a lake in Michigan...so no coral or barnacles but we did have a lot of seaweed!

  6. That is an interesting piece. I'm not sure I would've even known what it was if you hadn't told me. Anything from the sea is a great summer accessory!

  9. Ouch! I grew up on the Texas Gulf coast and my childhood memory is of the jelly fish and man-of-war. Talk about hurting if they happened to get you while out swimming! Severe burns that were extremely painful.
Your barnacles look real in the photo. Love the magnifying glasses. I keep one out on a tray too. Your vignette is charming, Kim. Happy First Day of Summer!

  10. What a pretty vignette. I'm a Georgia Girl and I love St. Simons. We use to go to Jekyl and eat in St. Simons. We now vacation at HHI, South Carolina. I can't imagine living on the ocean. Heaven. We have horrible memories of the jelly fish.

  11. It is definitely a conversation starter to share about your life on St. Simon's Island.

  12. Looks pretty lethal to me, Kim. I would kind of be afraid that after dark it would morph into some kind of monster and come get me. But it looks very pretty where you have it. Love the fern prints!

  17. Very pretty Kim...I want to steal that tray lol!! A few years ago we were in Turks & Caicos and we took the kids snorkeling Mackenzie rubbed against some coral and it cut her foot up pretty good.

  19. Beautiful. I have seen a few at our Home Goods, but they had awful silver spray paint jobs!! I would have scooped that one up in a heartbeat!!

  20. Oh yes! back in my home country, you can buy the real thing for pittance as well, only when I came here to the US did I realize that it was bad for the environment. Unfortunately, our country (Philippines) doesn't pay much attention to these kinds of things. :-)

  21. I would have grabbed it in a secdond, in fact, might have wrestled you for it:):):) Love it and who cares if it is the real deal? I bought a new shell on our way home from vacation today! Great minds. I decorated the house with all my shells before we left but still can't post....AAUUGGHH!! Hopefully, tomorrow my hubby will be able to help me. Cross your fingers for me:)

  22. Ouch.. after seeing that it made me think of how cut up you must have been. I scraped myself on some coral in Mexico and I remember the pain. The piece is beautiful and I love touch of summer it brings and at a great price too!
