Turn Those Lamps on and Save Energy

10.30.2014

If you have been reading my blog for any length of time you may have noticed that I have a thing for lamps. When I go in a home decor store I always check out the lamps even though I don't really need new ones. In fact I have a bunch that I need to take to the consignment store.

This weekend is the end of daylight savings time which means the days will be even shorter than they already are. I love lamplight and really don't like overhead lighting at all. So every day when it gets the least bit dark in my house I go around and starting turning my lamps on. I cannot stand a dark house. Light makes me happy.

I recently switched out the DIY demijohn lamp with this red French country style lamp that was in my hoarding storage room. I took this picture around 4 pm when it was just starting to get a bit dark in here even though this photo doesn't quite show that.

Then I turned the lamp on. Ah, much better.
I'm sharing some more shots of the lamps that get turned on every afternoon or on a rainy dark day.

Ah, yes, I love lamplight. So am I worried about burning all this energy with so many lamps turned on? Nope! I'm using Cree LED bulbs that burn up to 85% less energy and last 25 times longer than your incandescent bulbs which means big savings! I'm sure this makes Mr. Savvy happy, too. Did you notice that they emit a natural warm glow? No weird looking light like other energy saving bulbs. They also create a natural light that makes colors look true.

Cree bulbs are a bit different looking and feel different. They have a protective coating and they stay cool. No more burnt fingers changing out a bulb that just burned out. These last around ten years so no more constant changing of bulbs. I change incandescent bulbs all the time.

I truly would not be talking about these bulbs if I didn't love them. I could stand out in a crowded place and hand these out just to get everyone to try them. That's how much I love them.  I can't wait till all my lamps and most overhead lighting are switched out to these.

Do you love lamps and lamplight like I do?

These are available at The Home Depot.

You can find out more about these bulbs at creebulb.com.

Hooray for lamplight and saving energy!

Now, don't forget to turn your clocks back an hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

Disclosure: I am a brand ambassador for Cree bulbs and was compensated for this post, but all opinions are my own. You can view my full disclosure policy here.

  1. Nice tip on the bulbs. Do you use the soft white or the daylight bulb that they make? Also ever try their bulbs for can lights in the ceiling? I too love to turn on lamps. Copies up the space!

    1. Yes, I have replaced two of my nine kitchen canned lights and WOW what a huge difference with just two switched out. Can't wait to replace all of them. Then I will have to dim them down. I believe I'm using the soft white.

  2. I am with you...I LOVE lamplight and have lamps strategically placed for just the right ambience. I'm very ocd about it. I hate overhead too. I was just looking at those bulbs the other day. They are not inexpensive, though. I'll definitely get some to try. Looks like a great alternative to fluorescent.

    1. Anita, they cost more upfront, but pay for themselves in the long run. They last for over ten years and burn way less energy!

  5. Hi Kim! I was the lucky winner of the Cree bulb giveaway earlier this year and I absolutely adore them! I was not a fan of led because I really like the warmth of a traditional bulb...something most led bulbs don't have. But the Cree brand...Oh my! I cannot tell the difference at all. I highly recommend them and I thank you for my first bulbs!! Jane

  6. I'm a cheapskate but I've started the switch over and Cree are the most economical. I also love how they immediately turn on like an incandescent and don't need time to "warm up" to come to full power like a CFL. I'll believe the lifespan when I see it since I remember them saying CFL's would last for 5 years when they came out and I've probably replaced all of those on the same schedule I did the old school ones. For the price I paid, I hope I'm pleasantly surprised!

  10. OK, I will try these as I LOVE lamplight too, and like you turn them on all the time. The builder had all LED light bulbs in the house and I HATED them and changed most out. BUT, I will try the Cree ones since you said they give off a more natural light. Thanks and have a Happy Halloween!!! (Wish you could ahve been with us yesterday, we had a fun day!!!!)

  11. Oh Kim, you are so right. They are great bulbs. I can't stand the other energy saving bulbs that take longer to get bright because when I turn on a light I want it on now! That is not an issue with Cree!

  12. We changed our whole house out months ago to Cree bulbs love them...I'm like you I like having a light on in every room! The only bulbs I haven't changed are the chandeliers...I don't like the look of them.

  13. Your home is lovely. Thanks for the lightbulb suggestion. I was looking for a good energy-saving bulb. I think I'll pick up some of them.

  15. I am just like that- I ALWAYS check out lamps and light fixtures although I do NOT need another lamp in my life. Consignment shop is a great idea for those lamps you are tired of - I should do that. I love some of the ones you have here.

We are slowly switching light bulbs, too. We started with the outside ones that are constantly burning out. It is so cold here that it is hard to change them out after this month. I will look for Cree. The ones we have take a while to come all the way "on". xo Diana

  16. Kim, I too have a lamp addiction. I have them all over the house and even have 3 in my office at work! Thanks for the info about the Cree light bulbs. Can't wait to try them. The light looks so soft and natural and not harsh like other CFL bulbs. Love that lamp in your sunroom...Don't remember seeing that one!

  17. We all sound like "kindred spirits" when it comes to lamp loving! I have 16 lamps in my downstairs alone and they all come on in the a.m. and I turn them off on my way to bed at night! I call it, "waking up my house". I don't care for overhead lighting, either, well, except for in the kitchen. I have mostly flourescent bulbs (warm light) in my lamps and they last a very long time, as well, and give off a soft warm glow. I will have to check these out, though. I don't like the "blue" or "green" light that led bulbs emit. These must be improved! You have some very pretty lamps! :)

  18. You have beautiful lamps. Glad to learn about Cree bulbs as we have tried some others and the color they emit is wierd. Will try to find these. Thanks.

  19. Kim,
Love your lamp collection. You have so many pretty lamps. I too love the soft light of a lamp. I will check out these bulbs and I like that they give off soft light instead of that harsh blue/white light of other energy efficient bulbs.

  20. Kim, I remember learning about these bulbs through your giveaway earlier this year, but I have not tried them yet. I need to pick up some new bulbs this weekend and I will definitely pick some up this weekend. If you say they are good, then they must be!

  21. Kim, I love all of your lamps! And these bulbs are a favorite of mine as well.

  22. You have quite the collection of beautiful lamps!!! I seem to have a wee bit of a lamp addiction and always look at the lamps too even though I certainly don't need anymore. I turn all my lamps when the sun begins to set, it gives the house a warm and cozy feel. I have tried several of the new light bulbs out there but have not found any I like yet. I recently stocked up on regular light bulbs out of frustration but will be looking for the Cree bulbs when I run out again.
    Happy Halloween!

  23. Thanks for the info on Cree bulbs. I keep lamps burning 24/7. Can't stand a dark house either. I switched out bulbs but will definitely check out the Cree now.

  24. Kim, I know what you mean about light makes you happy! I love your lamps and now I want to get some cree bulbs. I love clocks like you love your lamps. I always want to know what time it is...lol! Thanks for the inspiration...now, I want to share my clocks!

    1. I know what you mean about clocks! I'm crazy over mine. And I feel the same way about watches, too. I also hate a dreary dark house! I was headed for HD today anyway, so I'll definitely try out these bulbs.

  25. Thanks for the recommendation....my husband put a few of our lamps on timers so our house looks like we are home when we are not....I like this because we don't come home to a dark house. :)

  26. I'm with you on not liking a dark house,
I like all your lamps and I have been selling lamps since I had so many.
I hoard lamps and chairs LOL

  27. I've been switching and changing lamps today too. I love lamplight! I'll look for these bulbs next time I am near HD.

  28. I'll try these bulbs. I hate the florescent ones. If these give a warm glow like incandescent I'll do them. Im with you...I like light in a house. I can't stand for it to be dark unless I'm sleeping. And I like the whole house lit up...I don't like to walk into a dark room or be able to see a dark room from where I am sitting or working. I leave lamps on in my living room 24/7 because I like my house to always look warm and happy. I like to drive home at night and see it a glow. I don't have overheads on very much unless I'm working on a project. Most of my friends keep their houses sooooo dark! That drives me nuts. If I like the light from regular old bulbs....do you think I will like these?

    1. Nita, the light from these is better than incandescent bulbs. They make colors natural and true and are a bit brighter. I love them!!

  30. I love Cree Bulbs. Their headquarters is in my hometown...they are great community partners and have switched all of my lights over to Cree products.

  31. I love these bulbs. I've changed out all the lamps and ceiling fan light bulbs.
With 31- can lights & 18-chandelier bulbs to go it will be a chunk of change. It helped the cost to just buy a few each time I went to Home Depot. I've had the first one I bought in a lamp upstairs for over a year. And I was having to change the old bulbs ever few weeks in that lamp. That one has already paid for itself.

  32. I will definitely try the Cree bulbs! I love lamps, especially when they don't match! Kim, your home looks beautiful as always!

  33. Cree bulbs are definitely the way to go and my "neighbor" agrees!!

  34. I love table lamps and have more than my small Cottage can handle. I have small windows as the Cottage is old and the table lamps make a soft light that is a lot cosier than overhead lighting. I'm slowly switching to led bulbs. I love your collection of lamps, especially the one with flowers on its base and the second one you showed, which we would call "lampe bouillotte".

  35. Definitely and at night I only have all the lamps on in my living room instead of overhead. ;-)
