The Bonus Room Transformation

11.17.2014

Y'all just do not know how much better I feel just by getting the STUFF cleaned out of my hoarding bonus room. This is the room over our garage and it is long and narrow with one small window. We don't have a basement so I was putting anything and everything in this room. Finally, I got in the mood to clean it out, after finding out my son, daughter in law, and three grands were coming for Thanksgiving. I needed this push to get this extra bed set up since there isn't a baby bed anymore. There are no more grand babies. They are growing up so quickly.

The first thing you really need to do is go over to THIS POST and refresh your memory of what the before looks like. It isn't pretty and I'll wait for ya. Go on.....

Okay, now that your eyes hurt let's get on to the pretty. All this is just a temporary quick fix. I will be painting the room after the holidays and we will replace the overhead florescent lights with new fixtures. The walls are very banged up and they need to be repaired and painted.

I didn't have to buy one single thing for this new space. Sometimes it's good to save a few things. :)

The white sleigh bed is the one that was in the farmhouse style guest room before I replaced it with the iron bed. I knew I could use it in here some day.

This space feels so cozy tucked under the eaves. Mr. Savvy said he came up here and just sat for awhile because he likes it. Wow, a man that notices.

I found this vintage magazine holder years ago at a local antique mall and it had been stored away until now.

This little table has been used in many spots in this house.

The lamps are from HomeGoods and were originally in my master.

I had almost let these floral pictures go, but for now they work perfectly in this space.

This little rattan table with removable tray is several years old.

This is the new view from the hall. Much better than what was here before.

This chair is the perfect place to take off or put on shoes.

An extra quilt is close by if needed for those cold nights or maybe just a nap.

Glad I hung onto this red wool rug by Surya.

This has to be one of my favorite duvet covers from Pottery Barn. It's a nice textured linen and in my favorite colors.

This is the other side of the room. I'm keeping this table and chairs so we have extra chairs to use when needed and this may make a good craft spot for the grands or maybe even for me There are still a few things that need to go to a consignment shop that were too nice for GoodWill.

Sometimes it's good that things are kept to use again. I'm sure glad I had all these to create this new space.

So until I get the paintbrush out this room will be perfect for my guests just as it is.

I'm guest posting for my friend Doreen at Hymns and Verses today while she recovers from surgery so be sure to check that out, too.

Have a super week!

  2. The new arrangement is very inviting. I'm sure your family will appreciate all the hard work. Bonus rooms can sometimes be difficult to make welcoming but your's certainly is.

  3. Kim, I sure wish I had a hoarding room for all my treasures. I get so tired of trying to find things in this room and that still in boxes after a move to a smaller house last year. I do know what you mean by needing to clean out the space, so us hoarders do know what we are doing by keeping some things for later use. It looks cozy with all you beautiful things neatly placed. Set up a puzzle for the kiddos to work on at the table (if they are old enough). Enjoy Thanksgiving with your family and your new room.

Like you I have more than enough etra furniture to make it into a nice comfy room.
Your looks great and I now your kids will feel cozy and welcome in it.

  5. Just in time for the holidays! Your bonus room is lovely and makes me wish that I had such a space. I love the chair and lamp but the bench at the end of the bed is my favorite.

  6. Wow, Kim, a miracle! Isn't it amazing what you can accomplish when you have the extra incentive of having loved ones visit?

Honestly, you've done more from using odds and ends around your house than most of us could do if we went out and bought everything new! You're such an inspiration. :)

  10. Our bonus room has had many changes over the years. It was really designed for a studio/craft room. That is why there are three sun tunnels in that room. It's almost back to bare basics with the house on the market.Once in awhile I get to thinking about doing a real room in there.:-)
Your room is beautiful! Love that duvet cover and I am always happy to see rattan. That table is fabulous!

  25. This room is lovely, Kim...and it's so great when you can shop your own stuff to furnish it! I love the idea of leaving the table and chairs for a game or crafting area...gives the room double purpose! Bet it felt wonderful to get that job done!

  27. Wow Girl! Your new guest room turned out pretty darn gorgeous. So what did you do with all the extras from your bonus room? I have a back garage and my workshop that look kind of like your bonus room. Every so often, I will go through and purge out things that are sitting there too long. It is amazing what we can find in our bits and pieces to make a room with.

The kids will love it and I know it feels SO good to get rid of some stuff!!!! Wishing you a happy and blessed Thanksgiving. Oh, and congrats on winning the dishes over at Shirleys!!!!!
