Armoire Progress

5.17.2015

We got right to work on the armoire yesterday and I also sanded the chair I bought. There was also a third project started by me, too. You know how one thing always leads to another. Today I'm showing you what we are working with.

As you can see in this photo there are a few missing parts. Not sure why the handles would be gone and truly don't understand the back panel being gone. Oh, and two shelves missing, too. I took this shot when we were trying out one of the shelves we purchased at Lowes.

Supplies

We purchased two 16 x 72 inch boards which was the closest size to what we needed. This meant some had to be sawed off since they were too long and just a tad too wide. Nothing my handy man can't handle.

I painted on a coat of Dark Walnut stain and was afraid it might be too dark.

But after two coats and two coats of satin poly the shelves will look just fine. No one, but us is going to see them anyway.

We had plenty of leftover beadboard planks from the guest bath project and they were just the right size for the back without any cutting. What's the chance in that happening again?

Today we should be attaching the back planks and placing the shelves in. Then I just need the handles I ordered to arrive.  I will also try to finish the third project I started because my house is a wreck and I can't live with it like this for long.

Have a good one!

  4. A beautiful piece. Perhaps it was used as a television cabinet at some point, hence no back or shelves. Have a great day!

  6. Maybe it was used as a TV cupboard and they removed the back so it'd be easier with wires?

  8. Cool work going on at your house! Betcha the armoire was used to house one of those big hulking TVs we all used to have. . . they were so deep that you would have had to remove the back to hold one of those babies!

  22. Can't wait to see it finished. My guess is it housed a tv before flat screens. We did the same thing to an old cabinet years ago to house the tv and VCR. We did keep the wood from the back and when flat screens and DVD players came in we replaced and wood on the back and now it's my craft cabinet.
