My Other Flea Market Find Customized

6.04.2015

I have been on a crazy painting spree lately, but when the mood strikes I just go with it. I have a couple of much larger projects that I need to paint, but the mood hasn't hit me strong enough yet so I will just do the little ones for now. I prefer painting furniture anyway.

On Monday when I shared my flea market finds I told y'all I had one more find that I would share later. It is this claw and ball foot table found at the first stop.

I didn't intend to place it in the sitting room when I bought it. I thought it would work as an end table in the great room, but it is too tall. I also did not intend to paint it, but once I got it in my house it was just too orange.

I wasn't sure what color I was going to paint it so I checked to see what colors I had on hand and grabbed a can of Annie Sloan's Coco.

I painted on two coats and wish I had a photo of that, but once I start painting it's hard to stop.

For the finished coat I mixed Annie Sloan clear wax and Miss Mustard Seed milk paint powder in Artissimo. Did not have a clue how it would look, but I love the way it turned out.

I wasn't thinking about blue and brown creating gray, but it did.

The colored wax created just the right aging.

Table: $70
Paint and wax: already on hand

Have you ever mixed a color with wax to make a custom color? You can mix liquid paint or the milk paint powder like I did.
Try it some time.

  3. Great find, love ball and claw foot table! I'm crazy about the custom color too! I need to get out and find some flea markets! here. I sure miss the Atlanta area antique shops and flea markets. I loved shopping there when our daughter and family lived there!

  4. Oh, wow, love that table after you painted it! As many time as I have painted furniture, I'm still amazed at the transformation that paint can make. I've mixed paint with wax before, but not the paint powder. I'm definitely going to have to try that. It gave that sweet table wonderful patina!

  7. I love the colored wax. Truly perfect finish.

I have a beast of a hutch to paint later this summer. I see a paint wax project in my future. Great job Kim.

  8. I always have wanted to try that but I am not as brave as most. I'm afraid I will make a mistake and then have to the whole piece over again. I also never tried any of Miss Mustard See products. I'll have to check out the paint powder. I'll have to see if it's easy to work with. I'm more of a glaze girl than wax. Much more playtime for me to get the look I always want to achieve.

This turned out great and I like it better painted. It seems to fit in your home better. Not that you need advice from me, LOL

  10. Great idea! I would have never thought of using a dark blue. I have used metallic mica powders and made a white wax with milk paint powder. It's all good!

  11. I did my first mixing of ASCP colors recently and love how it turned out. I have a bench I want to paint and I might just have to mix my own color.

  17. I loved the top of the table pre-paint, but I agree that it was a bit too orange. The paint job and color now is fantastic. The table has such a pretty shape and such wonderful details. Great find!

  18. Love the color! Your house is so lovely. I am up to my eyeballs in painting projects. We had to replace the floor in our entryway and kitchen due to a washing machine leak. This sparked an entire kitchen makeover. I just finished painting the walls and have to start on the trim. After that is finished I plan on repainting two cupboards and possibly our base cabinets.

  20. What a nice piece, Kim. I was painting a two tiered tea table a couple months ago and created a custom color with ASCP coco + old white + a touch of old violet and the result was a gray blue that was lovely. It must have something to do with the mix of colors to create coco.
BTW: I was in Lowes last weekend and saw that Valspar has a new line of chalk paint. Has anyone tried it yet?
