Restyled Kitchen Open Shelving

9.03.2015

The best change I made in the kitchen a few years ago was to remove the doors on this cabinet even though Mr. Savvy was not fond of the idea. I really wanted to take down the whole cabinet and add thick wood shelves, but he said no way so this was the next best thing. It basically stays the same, but recently got changed a bit.

Recently I bought a couple old wonderful crocks from one of my favorite Etsy Shops and had to find a place to display them where I could enjoy them.

I seriously don't know what the attraction is for these old crocks, but I have several of the Dundee Marmalade jars and had to add this one.

It's an old round lipped one with a bit of crazing and stains.

This is my first creamery crock, but probably won't be my last.

This trophy was moved from a spot that got changed up and I had no place to set it so I stuck it here on the middle shelf front and center and liked it. That's usually the normal way things get switched around here.

I added these two scalloped edge ironstone bowls, bought two different times, to this cake stand.

I love keeping this blue striped ironstone bowl that I bought from Marion of Miss Mustard Seed at the Luckett's Fair last year, out.

On the top shelf are two cow creamers and a row of ironstone pitchers.

On the bottom shelf along with the new crocks is this stack of platters and small tureen with wonderful discolorations.

Red striped straws were replaced with some of my vintage silver.

And a few hours after I had taken all these photos I stuck a few pieces of dried lavender in this crock and called it a day.

Yep, ideas are always popping in my head and the changes take place.

Tell me I'm not alone.
:)

  1. Looks great Kim, did you have to fill the holes where the doors were attached? I've thought about doing the same with a portion of my cupboards but then I think about dusting things and change my mind, lol.

  6. Oh I so love the new look and your new/old crocks....yes, that Etsy shop is the best!....I know I cannot convince my "resident advisor" to remove doors, but maybe, just maybe he may consider putting in some glass fronts....maybe!...Great job Kim!

  8. You are not alone. I love to arrange and rearrange too. I love that you have a nice place to display treasures. I would take the doors off of one cabinet for display if I could. My downsized kitchen means I need every inch for the normal and not the pretty storage. ha!

  12. Would you mind telling me where you bought the bar/rack you have on the side of your cabinet in the kitchen. Just love the hooks. I have to tell you your house is my dream. I am always trying to get inspiration from all your ideas. Thank you for sharing them with us.

  13. :) Men and their cabinet hang up. I have the same thing going over here...' nope.. not taking the cabinet down' . Well then remove the doors please, I asked. That was 5 years ago. Still no closer to getting my thick wooden shelves :/
LUV your new display Kim. Just changed out dishes in mine.

  14. You've acquired some nice pieces in your collection! i love the crocks with the typography the best. Doug and Jimmy both seem to feel the same way about open shelving in the kitchen. Jimmy doesn't like it. Oh well. Time will tell if that will change.

  15. No, you really aren't alone..and I think Men are pretty much alike. I get the same response in my house, so don't feel alone for one minute. Love your kitchen, and the way the cabinet looks with the doors removed, and the way the crocks are arranged. Perfect!!

  16. I have some open shelves in my kitchen too and I love them. I am inspired now and will have to think about changing things up on my shelves. My husband doesn't mind open shelving, I just have to keep him from adding "clutter" that doesn't match my display.

  18. I love it!! I took the doors off two of my main cabinets, added mirror for backing and thick glass shelves....and I love it. The light that bounces is like I put in a skylight.

Now if only hubby would have to go out of town for at least 5 days so I can paint the cabinets....I'd be on cloud nine. I have read some of the other commenters and it seems there is a "hubby's against kitchen cabinetry diy: group we don't know anything about....and mine is one of the "no paint real wood" guys....but he'll get over it. Unless he wants me to put curtains in his man garage. LOL

Love the open cabinetry....it makes kitchen look bigger in my book and I love the way it shows off your treasures. P.S. Dust isn't as bad as I thought it would be, with the doors off!

  19. I frequently change things up around here. It keeps it fresh and allows me to enjoy what we have. I think we see things when we move them around to a new place.
Love the creamery crock. I'm always looking for these too. I think it's the graphics that are attractive to me, but like you I use mine to hold flatware or pens, pencils, scissors. Some times I add flowers or dried lavender too. They are useful for many things.

  20. It looks fabulous! I love the open-shelves look, but I'm a little apprehensive about having a lot more dusting. Do you find that?

  21. Very pretty, Kim. That was a great compromise too. Ideas are always swirling in my head, I'm just not so fast acting on them.

  22. The styling looks natural and effortless... which is proof you worked a lot on it! I love all the different whites.

  23. Kim, I love your old crocks, especially the Dundee Marmalade one. I can remember my mom buying Dundee Marmalade when it came in the white crock; unfortunately, I don't think she saved any.
