Great Room Project Reveal

11.16.2015

Two weekends ago when the rain began, that we thought would never end, I decided to tackle a project that had been on my mind for some time. If I suddenly get in the mood to paint then I usually will jump on it before that mood leaves me. So off to the paint store I went and there was no stopping me.

Do you see what got changed?
Let's refresh your memory. This is how it looked a few weeks ago.

I painted the built ins and mantel! I was just tired of the old look. I need clean and fresh.

When I painted the built ins a few years ago I used Annie Sloan Chalk paint™ in Old White. Well they were a bit too yellow or had turned more yellow and the matte finish was just not working for me anymore. Also if we ever downsize and need to sell the house these painted correctly will help.

I decided to paint them in the same color as the wall, but in a semigloss. I used Benjamin Moore Advanced paint in Manchester Tan. I'm loving the monochromatic look and I love how my antiques and collections pop against the neutral background.

Just look at that shine. So much better than the before.

This was the mantel before and it was fine, but when I painted the built ins I wanted the mantel fresh and clean looking, too.

I am really loving this new clean and fresh look. I think as I'm getting older I want lighter and cleaner.

I have changed up the pillows again with these new plaid ones from the country living fair by French Laundry Home. I was so glad to see they were selling just the covers this year if you didn't need the inserts. I have plenty of inserts. Pillow covers are so much easier to store away.

The pheasant pillow that I bought last year works perfectly with the new plaid pillows.

I bought this cotton garland and changed up this basket on the coffee table. I like to bring out my birds around Thanksgiving.

I'm using the old trapper's basket to hold this fur throw. Mr. Savvy wraps up in this almost every night so I set it right next to his chair.

This project took me four days, but so worth it.

Soon Christmas will adorn this room and then more changes are coming in January.
I've been hinting at what has got to change.

Have a fabulous week!

  2. They look beautiful with the new color. I love that Advance paint. I used it when I painted my bookcases and I love the way it doesn't end up feeling sticky on the shelves like other paints can. In fact, you might have been the one who recommended that Advance line to me in the first place! Anyway, it's been a couple years and I am very happy with how it has held up. Have a great week, Kim!

  14. Did I read this right? It says it's the same color as the walls but in semigloss. It looks like it's the same color as the trim. It looks very white not the darker color above the bookcases. I'm confused is it my computer or did you mean to say trim instead of walls?

    1. No, you did not misread it. The walls and my new paint project are the same color. The walls are matte and the built ins and mantel are in a semigloss which causes it to look a bit different. The trim in the room is white. The built ins used to be white like the trim before I painted them the first time.

  16. Downsize and move? Are you really thinking of moving??
In my experience...the children come and go, constantly, and then they get married, and then the family is big again, and then bigger...and then the house is almost too small!
    Enjoy the space...don't move....

  17. Hi Kimmie! I love your new look so bright and beautiful. I'm so glad I was able to read your entire post and comment. I haven't been leaving you comments because I couldn't! Every time I would come over a window would pop up and say 'unresponsive script' or something and it would freeze my computer. I've worked and worked and found an add on for Firefox that has remedied that! Yay.
    Hope you're doing well.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  23. We have used AS Chalk Paint on several pieces and I always wondered if I would be able to paint on top of it with a "regular" paint. Did you have to sand everything with AS and AS wax on it first?

    1. Linda, I did lightly sand it mainly to get the brush marks out. I think you probably should sand the wax off before applying regular paint.

  32. It looks lovely, Kim! I like the light, bright look. I was surprised to read that the paint is Manchester Tan, though--it's amazing how the semi-gloss makes it look like a slightly different color. Great choice!

  33. that room is amazing kim. the new color is so pretty. Love mr.savvy's throw. PB?

  34. Wow! Amazing how the new paint brightens everything, and the new color really accentuates the marble around your fireplace. I guess you're gonna change your red sofa but personally, I think it really warms up that room. But then again, I have a red loveseat that I cannot wait to get recovered in a light neutral!

  35. It's amazing how you are able to keep improving on a good thing, Kim. I didn't think your great room could be any prettier than than it already was, but I'm loving the lighter look. I want to do the same thing in my house - repaint everything, and take down a lot of wallpaper. I get a headache just thinking about it!

  36. Looks great Kim! Love your pillows too.
