Our Cookout and the Deck After Dark

5.26.2016

After receiving the dining table and chairs for the deck I had to host a cookout, right? So I invited my daughter, son in law, and Miss Leila to come and dine alfresco with us.

Early in the day I spruced up the deck before full sun was on it and I snapped this shot. I had Mr. Savvy hang three of my pink ceramic lanterns from the pergola. I had a candle in each one and they showed up a bit once it got dark.

Leila and mom hanging out on the sofa. Leila brought the blue bucket in the foreground so she could wash her shells she brought.

Chillin and enjoying a Sprite.

Grown up drinks for the adults chilling. Oh, and something funny I did. I accidentally bought red wine instead of white. I was in a store I don't normally shop and saw the wine names of some whites I drink and grabbed the bottles and then my daughter poured a glass and asked me do you normally chill red wine? What? Red? No, it was supposed to be white. I sent my son in law to the store to get some white and all was good again.

My granddog Chloe came, too and Miss Bailey is checking her out. They have not seen each other in a long time. Miss Bailey is the bigger silver colored one.

Chips and salsa and some crackers and goat cheese were enjoyed before dinner.

While we were outside these were inside making syrup for strawberry shortcake.

Chicken, steak and veggies marinated all day and were put together and ready to grill.
Marinade for steak kabobs can be found here.
For the chicken marinade I used a bottled marinade and don't remember the name of it unless I find it in the store again.

The charcoals were lit and we waited and watched.

The sun was setting.

Candles were lit.

After we ate we still sat outside for a bit, but it got chilly. I handed out throws to knock the chill off. We have been enjoying low humidity which makes it get quite chilly after dark and I dread when the humidity starts climbing. I know it won't be long.

I didn't get any photos of the meal after it was ready since I didn't think about it.

Here is what was on the menu.

Chicken, beef and vegetable kabobs
Baked potatoes
Corn on the cob
Strawberry shortcake

I hope y'all enjoy a fun cookout a safe and Happy Memorial Day weekend!

  2. I love your string lights! I have been looking for some but haven't found them yet in France. Dusk lasts until around 10, so it will be a while before we need to light the lanterns or candles.
As for chilling red, it works fine for a younger, fruity wine. There's one from the Minervois region here called Sur la Terrace that's meant to be served cold. Very nice.

  9. It is so pretty, I can imagine you are going to eat as often as possible outside now and don't worry about the red wine, the French often drink chilled red wine, especially Beaujolais and Pinot Noir. Enjoy!

  11. Your new deck is fabulous! We've had so much rain here (Kentucky) that I haven't really set up my deck yet. What do you do when it rains -- bring all cushions in or do you cover with tarps? Really enjoy your blog!

  21. Kim, Your deck is so enticing! I would love to sit under that pergola with a glass of wine--red or white! You even captured the twinkle of the lights in your photo. Very special! I have been asking my hubby to add a pergola to one end of our deck but he is thinking he should retire and we should move. I'm going to show him yours! Your granddaughter is growing so fast and she is adorable. Have a wonderful weekend. Linda

    1. I'm glad I finally talked mine into adding the pergola last year. We never used the deck before. I wish we would downsize after my husband retires, but he wants to stay put. Once we have to start hiring help for all the diy's we have done he may change his mind. :)
