The Softer Shades of Summer Guest Bedroom

6.26.2017

In the past I was all about vivid colors. When we built our house the dining room was navy blue including the ceiling. The great room and foyer were a raspberryish color and the master bedroom was green including the carpet. Yea, that was the nineties. The kitchen and master bath were wallpapered in prints that pulled all those colors together. I still love color, but I just don't want my whole house filled with deep dark hues anymore. It seems as I age I want lighter and brighter surrounding me with pops of colors through the accessories. Going more neutral allows me the freedom to change the accent colors with the accessories. I'm already scheming some new fall ideas. Today I'm sharing the French farmhouse style guest bedroom in much softer shades which can also work all year.

The Softer Shades of Summer Guest Bedroom

I am loving white bedding this summer. I bought a new linen bed skirt to replace the vanilla colored one that was a bit too yellow for me. I love the casual look of the linen wrinkles and all.

After changing the curtains from the blue patterned ones to these soft striped ones started the change to the softer palate in this room perfect anytime, but especially summer.

All the pillows are ones I had except for the two Euro pillows.

The soft blue linen shams, bought years ago from an Etsy shop, add a nice soft color and brings out the blue in the curtains and goes well with the artwork over the bed and the French blue armoire.

The striped Euro pillows were a recent find from Dillards online. I was looking at one of my shelter magazines and saw an ad for Southern Living products sold at Dillards and that led me to check them out on line. I searched Euros and these came up and were very reasonable especially since it was the whole pillow and not just a cover. In fact there is no cover....that is the pillow. So eventually I can use these as inserts in covers, too, but for now I love the soft gray stripes that are very French looking just as they are.

I have had this canvas pillow for years that I found at the Restoration Hardware outlet.

If you have summer guests an easy way to show them which towels to use is to tuck them in a market basket along with some reading material.

I moved this Santos doll from my master bath to this room. The bathroom hopefully will be getting renovated soon so I need to start cleaning it out.

Layers of white and cream bedding using a textured quilt and a cotton puckered duvet say stay awhile.

One pop of bolder color was added with the throw pillow in the chair.

The painting over the bed was moved from the master bedroom. I just swapped the frame that was here before with the painting. I will share the master bedroom soon.

I need to get the mister to lower the painting over the bed a bit. It's okay, but it is bugging me.

More summer styled rooms coming and have an awesome week!

  4. It looks beautiful! I'm going lighter these days too. One day, I'll get rid of the cranberry colored print couch in the living room. I agree when the furniture and walls are more neutral, it gives you more options to add color with accessories and pillows.

  8. What are Euro pillows? Square? I have noticed that the default here is 25.5 inches square. But rectangles also can be found.
The one that blows my mind is the "traversin"--a really long, round pillow that goes across the bed. In hotels, I always would banish that one. But I still see them around.

  16. I love the soft shades, it looks so inviting, The square pillows are always useful although personally I don't like sleeping with them. We have never had them in the UK so I think they must only be continental Europe. Interestingly, I recently bought new pillows for our guest house here in France and there was a far greater choice of the standard rectangle than the square, it seems the rectangle is the most popular even here now!

    1. We don't sleep on those either. They are only for looks. We sleep on a standard pillow.

  17. Love your style and your home. The summer bedroom is delightful and so serene. I would like to asked if your wall behind the bed is wallpaper or wood to get the shiplap look? I know they recently came out with wallpaper. I love it no matter what it is!

  18. It looks amazing Kim! I am in love with the cow painting and I need to find some curtains like that for our dining room. I currently have a pair that I love and used at our last home but sadly they do not make them anymore and i need three panels.
