The Mind of a Decorating Lunatic

10.12.2017

This is how my brain works. It's Monday morning and I'm cleaning the house. Then I look at the pillows on the sofa and think....hmmm, I could switch those up for a new look. Maybe use the striped multicolored pillows and then switch out the brown for blue and maybe just maybe even add a pop of coral. Then the switching begins and it's 10:30 and I'm still cleaning and haven't had breakfast yet. Oh, and I'm still in my pajamas, too. Yep, that's pretty much my normal around here when a new idea pops in my head. It's definitely the mind of a decorating lunatic, but oh what fun!
And girls, I know I'm not alone.

I'm going to say it again. The best thing I ever did was get rid of the brick red sofa and chair. Yep, the neutral sofa is where it's at. Now, I can change up the pillows to my heart's desire.

I also changed out a few other things besides the pillows. You know that snowball thing? Yea, that happened, too. I moved the plant in the concrete urn ( Lord that thing is so heavy) to the sofa table and the confit pot with the maple leaves moved to the bookcase. Just a little switcharoo.

Look how those maple leaves pick up the colors of the pillows.

This plant is loving all this light.

The other thing that changed, actually before the pillows did, is the chairs by the chest. I placed the wicker chairs from the sun room in here. Why? Well, because something new took place of the chairs in the sun room and eventually I will share what that is.
You can see what was here by the chest before in my mini fall tour.

I love texture these chairs add.

See that cushion? The cushion that came with the chair is white and a nylony type fabric so I grabbed a velvet pillow cover and put the cushion in it, zipped it up and voila! Yep, sure did!

Of course I changed the vignette on top, too.

And back to the pillows on the sofa. Just look at all that color on my neutral sofa.

Any other decorating lunatics out there? I know who you are!

  1. Hi Kim. I too am a decorating lunatic!! I was cleaning my master bathroom yesterday and got the idea to move things around in there and that snowballed into the kitchen and family room. Boy it is fun !! Anyway I love the colorful pillows on your neutral sofa!! They look so pretty! God Bless!

  2. Hi Kim,
I can really relate to this one. The only difference is that I have been known to stop cleaning and head to HomeGoods or wherever to buy more pillows or to find a new lamp, etc. I know you get what I'm saying, so yes, I'm a decorating lunatic.
I love your new neutral sofa. It's gorgeous and so is the entire room.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for our malice! LOL!

    hugs,

  4. Decorating lunatic, yes! My husband thinks I'm a little off because I'll stand in the middle of a room and stare at an object (e.g. built-ins) not moving or talking, while my brain is changing things up before I commit to actually making the changes. Great job on the neutral sofa.

    1. Oh, Mary, I do the same thing and my husband will ask me if I'm playing house again. He'll tell Miss Bailey I have that look in my eyes again.

    2. The husband just rolls his eyes and sighs when he sees my arms crossed and eyes fixed on something. He knows what's coming. That's when the 'can't we just leave everything alone for a week?' starts! I should show him this post so he can't say I'm the only one anymore.

  5. Kim, where did you buy the chair that is beside Mr. Savvy's? It's the neutral color one with the wooden frame. Your room looks wonderful, as always. Thank you in advance.

  7. I may be a lunatic, but not a decorating lunatic. (But I'm not home as much as you are.) Yes, I have long had neutral bases (sofas, bed coverings, etc.) and add accents of soft colors with accessories.

  8. Well, I think I am a lunatic all the way around...not just with decorating. lol Anyway, I LOVE those striped pillows...when I first looked at them I thought you had two striped pillows on each end-then realized the strips were a mismatched pattern so it was an optical illusion...lol.
It's a vicious circle when you start moving stuff around--there never seems to be an end and sometimes I end up with an extra piece and wonder where the heck I am going to put IT- Happy Thursday, fellow loony! xo Diana

  9. Ok, I plead guilty as well! I never pass up something I love even if I don't know where it will go. Then when I get home I find a great spot for it and the shuffling starts:) OR, I pull something out that I haven't used in awhile and the same process starts. But it sure IS fun! I have a friend who moved her bedroom furniture in the middle of the night while her husband was asleep in the bed!!!! We are having dinner with them tonight, I'll have to ask her if she remembers that:):)

  10. You just described me to a "T". It's so much fun though! I'm happiest when I'm home and get to rearrange and decorate. I switched out our green sofa in our living room a few years ago for a neutral sofa and LOVE it. One of the best decorating decisions I ever made. We seem to share a love of boxes. I have been collecting them since I was in college and am now almost 50. Your decorating style resonates with me and yours is my favorite blog I follow. You're so real and non-pretentious. My kind of woman!

I've been collecting only for a few years. They can be terribly expensive, but mine were all cheap. 😊

  11. That's what gets me in trouble every time I started cleaning. I think, "hmmm..." and then the snowball starts rolling. LOL
Love the changes. I also love that making just a few simple changes with things already on hand keeps the rooms fresh.

  12. Yep! I'm a decorating lunatic sometimes! Can't wait to get my new sofa in November! I'm going more neautral so I can add color with accessories! I love your living room especially your new arm chair that replaced the red chair! The wood and lines of that chair are gorgeous! Yes it does become a snowball effect! Neutral furniture and walls are definitely the way to go! I love the way you move things from room to room for a completely different look. Now that I'm retired I stay in my PJs have the day if I'm not going anywhere! You are the pillow gal too! So many beautiful pillows!

  13. Count me in the number that is obviously growing. Came into office to log some financial info in computer and got sidetracked by some pictures that needed to be rearranged and that led to removing some books and rearranging the bookshelves. That of course led me back to the desk where pictures under the glass looked crooked so that had to be corrected and the whole room dusted. And yes, I'm still in my pj's, without breakfast at 9:30 and packing and showering for a weekend trip to Dallas yet to do.

  14. Me too. ha! It's like one thing leads to another. Dusting day seems to be the day I go wonkers and get my ideas to redo tabletops, etc

  15. Flying my Lunatic Decorating Flag Proudly!! The other day my Mom popped by around noon and I was still in my pj's changing out some décor as I was cleaning. She is use to now so its nothing new!

BTW...love that coral pillow on your sofa. I am not a orangey fall person so I love using coral as a softer, more muted alternative.

  18. Oh, dear friend, you are not alone!!! Some days it will be midafternoon, still in jammies, no breakfast or lunch, fixing a new floral arrangement, vacuum cleaner in the middle of the floor......and then some one says...'what's for dinner'??

Yes, we need a flag or a membership pin.......

  20. We bought a new home a few months ago and I have had the opportunity to recover and replace and I went very neutral with key pieces. It is so much fun to change out when the basics are neutral. My gosh, I wish I owned stock in Pottery Barn because I have purchased so much from them--and HomeGoods, too! I get much inspiration from you, Kim!

  21. I love how you change things up frequently, Kim. I'm still stuck with my red loveseat. SIGH.

  22. Guilty decorating lunatic! Every get an idea when you are supposed to go to sleep and you end up decorating in your head all night? Been there!!!

  23. If and when I have the time, yes I'm one too! When an idea grabs me I cannot let it go, often though my decorating is at midnight and beyond, not the best light to do anything in, but hey a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!

  26. Kim,
Reading your post is like peeking into a day in my life. I do the exact thing. I can't stop when I get started; decorate...redecorate and then soon, it all starts again. My rooms rarely look the same over a period of two-three weeks. It's a continuous change of pillow colors, moving furniture and sometimes...repainting! So happy to know it's not just me with some strange need to change things constantly. :-)

  29. JUST this morning: what I SHOULD be doing: working on my Thanksgiving schedule, menu and shopping list. What I AM doing: standing in my living room in my bathrobe, coffee cup in hand, rearranging candles on the built -ins and pumpkins and pinecones on my mantel. But that is what makes my heart happy.....

  30. Yep, that's absolutely the way I roll around here....but I call it puttering! During the week, those ideas come flooding into my mind while I'm at the gym, and I cannot wait to get home before I forget them all! Your changes all look great, Kim!
