The New Paint Color in the Great Room

2.12.2018

Painting a large area with tall walls is no easy job, but five years ago that's what we did and at first I loved the new color, but then I loathed it as it just got more and more golden looking. I kept living with it because it was just too big of a job to take on again. After almost five years I couldn't take the color any longer and since Mr. Savvy refused to go way up the ladder again I had to hire painters. Best money we've spent to get the look I was going for in the first place. The power of paint always amazes me.

Today I'm sharing the new paint color in the great room along with some updates.
Not the best photos as I tried to take these quickly between sunshine and rain coming and long visits at the hospital.

Morning sun coming from the front of the house creates a beam of light on the coffee table.

The new color may not look like a huge difference from before, but if you read the last paint color reveal post from 2013 you'll really see the difference plus the color before that reveal, too. It's taken three tries to get it right. The built ins and mantel are still the same color as before. I may tackle them later or leave them. They do look more beige in person. It's not coming across in the photos.

I ordered these new Aidan Gray candle scones several weeks ago and they arrived last week. I will probably get some short candles for them, but no time to shop these days.

A little rearranging on the coffee table and a new rug just like the one in the dining room. The other rug was getting bad pulls in the threads from miss Bailey's nails.

Of course I changed up the pillows.

This large chest from France moved from the foyer. I shared the change in the foyer in this post where these two chests were swapped.

I created a new vignette on the chest using items I love to collect.

Chairs have been swapped out with the dining room chairs. Always good to add some black.

Shelves were rearranged a bit.

Who says vintage dough bowls need to be displayed on tables filled with stuff? I like to just lean mine sometimes.

Can y'all believe I purchased the gray pillows the last time we painted this room in 2013 and I just didn't care for them enough to use them and this time I love them.

If you don't love the wall color in your home it's best to get it changed when you can as it will probably never grow on you. I know mine didn't.

Paint color is French Canvas by Benjamin Moore Paint.

I cannot thank y'all enough for the prayers and well wishes for my mom through social media, here on the blog and personal emails. They mean the world to me. Mom might be going home today or within the next couple of days, but will still need some care at home. Being home should make her feel much better.

Have a great week!

  5. The room is so much brighter now! Love it! I have Manchester Tan in my family room/kitchen and I know what you mean about the yellowing...though sometimes I like it. It really depends on the time of day! Prayers for your mom!

  10. Kim,
The last pic really shows how much lighter, brighter and fresher the new paint color really is. To me, paint is such a difficult choice as what looks great in one persons space can look entirely different in someone else's due to lighting, room size, ceiling height, etc.

So happy to hear your Mom is making progress and praying for better days ahead. She will definitely recover better in her own surroundings. Have a blessed week!

Love the new sconces! So glad to hear that your mom is getting ready to be released. Also when you showed the new paint a week or so ago I went right out and bought your color and painted my bump out area in my living room With It. Nice Soft Color.

  20. How many rug changes have you had in this room. Then you call yourself decorating on a budget???

    1. Let's see I only had the subtitle of "decorating on a budget" the first couple of years blogging. So this is someone who has been reading my blog for a long time. I have explained that now I buy things to update with from the ad income I make from the blog to inspire others to show how easy it is to switch things up. I know everyone can't buy a new rug and by the way this rug was not expensive at all for a rug. It was on sale and free shipping or I would not have purchased it. My blog is a job and I spend the money to put back into it to share simple ways of making changes. I would have kept the last rug that I loved, but miss Bailey's nails were ruining it. You must like what I blog about or you wouldn't keep coming back for more. :) I still don't buy over the top expensive things because there is no need to so basically yes, it's still on a budget.

    2. Changing things out doesn’t have to cost a lot. You can swap rugs from room to room, it’s called “shopping the house”.

Your great room is wonderful and it's a good thing sometimes to have it done by professionals, I try when I want a big job done, like painting.
    Happy Valentine's.

  23. Just perfect. I'm not a fan of gold undertones either. It's sure worth time and effort to do a lot of pre-planning with lot's of test colors, since colors change throughout the day. Your home and those windows just make it such a gorgeous space. I love how your spaces have evolved thru the years. We've all learned alot about decorating as you've forged ahead. Great job, love it all!

  24. Absolutely stunning, Kim. I know what you mean about tall walls. We've lived in our old house since 2003. The one place interior place we hadn't painted was the stairwell, because it was about 25 ft high and narrow. Someone was going up a ladder and it was going to be tricky on those stairs. I finally did it ;) - and am so very glad. Love your new color - it's perfect. Love your new arrangement of furniture - everything pops - beautifully! Well done!

  27. Love your new color, it highlights your trim nicely still but really brightens your room. I also like your built ins in the slightly darker color, it adds depth, but your vision may be different and you do have a gift for this!
Your black touches add such drama and sophistication, I tire of the all white scheme that has taken the blog world by storm. Your rooms are a vision. Marie
