Vintage French Grape Harvest Basket

10.25.2018

I know I just shared my fall foyer, but I took those pictures several weeks ago and didn't want to waste my time by not sharing them. But today I'm sharing how the foyer actually looks right now. After going on a little getaway last week I was able to stop in my favorite antique shops in Fairhope, Alabama again. When I shopped there last June there was a vintage grape harvest basket hanging on the wall and I just knew it had to be more money than I wanted to pay. You know they say you should buy what you love when you find it because it could be gone. Thank goodness it was still there when I stopped back in as it had bugged me ever since I left it. The best part is the price was not as much asI thought it would be. These old baskets get quite pricey in the Atlanta area, but not in this shop.
It's filled with fall leaves now, but it will be fun to change out seasonally and of course for the holidays.

I love how Nora Murphy filled hers with flowers in the summer.

I took some close ups of mine to share all the details.

I should have taken shots of the original rope attached to the back before it was hung, but hubby was not taking it back down. They are so old and worn.

The lady working in the shop said she didn't realize how great this basket was until she took it down. It's circa 1890 and has a great patina to it and all the worn, tattered and rusty parts.

She said it had come over in one of their containers from France last May.

After hanging the basket the vignette on the chest was changed, too.

So if you see something you truly love get it if you can.

I'm going to have fun decorating with this vintage French grape harvest basket.

  7. I think about how hard someone worked in the vineyard carrying this basket over 100 years ago. And now it has ended up being loved in your beautiful home. I’m so glad you went back and bought it!

  12. What a find! This post reminded me of a wall type basket I have had in storage forever! It was made in Germany and my parents bought it while stationed there (and where I was born). It's much smaller, but I wonder if I could utilize it in a similar way...hmmm...
