Trending....Dark Cabinets

1.18.2019

If you keep up with design trends you may have noticed that there are a lot of dark rich colors in home design now. It seems what goes around comes around again. When we built our house in 1995 jewel tones were trending. Our great room and connecting foyer was painted a dark raspberry color, the dining room was navy and our master bedroom was a dark green and then there was wallpaper in the master bath and in the kitchen that tied all those colors together. Of course over the years the dark colors have been painted over and I have gone neutral. Funny how now the dark jewel tones are back and I have seen several on instagram going to the dark side. Me, not so much, but I do love the look.

Kitchen cabinets have gone darker too with rich deep colors and I'm sharing some I found.

I love all these dark cabinets, but I'm not going darker in my home.
What about you? Do you like the new trend?

Have a fabulous weekend!

  1. Oh my I do like the dark colors. I , like you described, still have the green master bedroom and the wallpaper and the 90's colors that I would like to brighten up, however, they still have a warmth to them that I like in my small home. These are wonderful pictures, thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful weekend.

  2. Funny, I finally have a white kitchen and dark is coming back lol. Anyway, I love some of the navy and dark green I have been seeing but I will stick with my lighter colors for now.

  3. I love all your inspiration photos but my kitchen has only been white for 3 years so I plan to enjoy it for a long time. However, we did paint our dining room navy and I couldn't be happier! It's always fun to see what is trending, isn't it? Enjoy your weekend, Kim!

  4. I have had cherry cabinetry in my last home...they were of high quality and fifteen years later they looked as new as the day they were installed...however, I am so ready for a change to a lighter, brighter kitchen...but I think that putting in a statement of color into the sea of white is a good thing....I am leaning toward a "color" in the laundry room though...Happy Friday Kim!

  5. I have a black buffet in the kitchen, does that count? All the rest of my kitchen is white and I love that it seems so big....I love the drama the black cabinets give in some of the kitchens I see...but it wouldn't work here...just my little buffet for me....

  6. I don't care for the dark cabinets everywhere. I light on top and dark bottoms. Getting older I crave and need the light to see !

  7. I just got my dream kitchen.....white cabinets, faux marble counters, dark wood floors! It is open and bright. I also like color, but not dark and not in abundance as in our last home. My transition to lighter and brighter makes me so happy!

  8. I was determined to have a white kitchen when we purchased our home two years ago. Instead, I have wood cabinets--kind of a warm pecan color with beautiful stone floors. It is, oh so French Country and timeless. I surprised myself when I fell in love with it.

  9. I enjoy the darker, dramatic colors in other people's spaces, but not my own. I've had multiple homes with dark walls and cabinets. I love having a lighter, brighter space. I like using color with accessories, because they are easily changed out, since I get bored with a "color" easily. It's pretty hard to change out cabinetry when you're over it.

  10. I love the look of lighter and darker cabinets in a space. I'd like to think that darker cabinets never really went out it's just that everyone was talking about white cabinets for so long?

  11. My dad is a cabinet maker and at his recommendation I have cherry cabinets. He said that never a year passes that he doesn't install some no matter what is trending. Timeless.

Do I wishfully look at white, light colored kitchens from time to time? Yes, I do but I still love my beautiful cherry wood and would not want to replace them.

  13. These are all beautiful rooms and I have seen this trending too. I tend to stay with what I love and not go with the trends. I am just going to the dark side lol! White cabinets are the what I love.
    Happy Friday.

  14. Oh gosh! We've been pinning some of the same photos! I may get to remodel the kitchen this year and I'm gathering ideas! But I would have to have white uppers no matter what I decided to do on the bottom!

  15. Could live with any of these kitchens but still prefer white. Like to change the colors too often!! Thanks much!

  16. Like you said, what goes around, comes around. I did the jewel tones thing in the 90's also. We were just married and our first apartment was covered in them. While I adore the drama of that second inspiration photo, I just don't think I could go back there again. Too soon!

  17. I thought about going darker in our powder room because it needs to be painted but in the end I couldn't do it yet. I just remember how small it makes everything feel. I've painted over all my dark colors. Our house was built in 90. It was builder white but I painted green and burgundy and eventually cream and yellow. I still love my whiter, lighter walls for now.

  18. I just don't like dark kitchen cabinets. They're depressing to me. I think a kitchen needs to be light and bright. Not so much like a bedroom.
