My first post showed my foyer and the chest in it that I recently refinished. Now I am going to show the before picture and the refinishing process.
The before wasn't bad, but I was ready for a change. So I went to Ace Hardware and picked out my base coat paint and picked up all my supplies and I was ready to begin. I lightly sanded the surfaces and put on my first coat of Benjamin Moore Georgian green semi-gloss. I did not use a primer since I was going to distress the piece to make it look old and worn. I also just noticed that this shows the way my dining room use to look. I will share that makeover soon.
The next picture shows a lot of the distressing I did and then I painted over it with a mocha glaze and then rubbed off the access glaze.
This is a better view of the glazing done on the side.
And the next picture is the finished product. I was very proud of how it turned our. Even my husband was impressed since this was the first time I had done this.
I hope that may have given you some idea of how to refinish a piece of furniture with the painting and glazing method. It really is easy. It took me a day from start to finish. Just give it a try.
Would love to hear from you.
Would love to hear from you.

For your first time at this you've done excellent. Well done. It looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOf course you know how much I LOVED how this turned out. You inspired me to start painting my own furniture! You took the fear out of it once you explained how you did it and I saw the beautiful outcome. Can't wait to see it in person. It's so pretty!
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, the transformation is amazing. I have a little desk that was mine as a child that I would love to paint but am afraid I would mess it up terribly. Seeing this almost, (notice I said, almost) makes me feel as if I can do it. Alas it will probably stay wood toned. Love your chest, you really did a great job. How is your new grand baby? Hugs Kathysue
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, Congrats on your NEW BLOG! Everything looks GREAT. I love the chest. It turned out awesome. I've always wanted to use glaze but was really intiminated by it. You make it look so easy :)
ReplyDeleteKim, what a thrill to find you here in blogland. I have missed a lot of friends that use to be at Micasa. Your chest is just gorgoeus. It is such a beautiful piece to begin with, but the paint just emphasises the fabulous lines of the piece even more. Your vignette on the top of it is stunning. I also looked at the below post and your home is fabulous. I really look forward to seeing more of your wonderful transformations. Thanks so much for stopping by and letting me know you are here. Hugs, Marty

ReplyDeleteThis turned out great!! After I paint my living room, I'm still thinking VERY seriously about painting my hutch as you suggested. I'm trying to make sure my paint in the living room doesn't clash with my dining room paint and cause me to restart the vicious cycle!!
ReplyDeleteThis is great, Kim! I think it shows off more of the beautiful details painted, too! I love how it looks like your pets were coming by to see what you were doing. : )

ReplyDeletewow, this is such an exceptional piece of furniture. you did such a great job with the transformation! i've never glazed, but this makes me want to try it! in the "before" picture, all the gorgeous details of the piece are lost because everything is the same color, but the glaze just makes those details pop. ok, i'm convinced, i'm gonna try it :)
ReplyDeleteI love the way this piece turne dout. The lines are amazing and the paint & glaze really bring the details out. I also love the color you picked.
ReplyDeleteGreat job... girly! I love that shade of green I'm in the process of painting a vintage buffet. You have inspired me... Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCould you please give me the brand name/label information for the glaze you used on this chest. Thank you and I LOVE the finished product.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Kim,
ReplyDeleteI need your help with something,I just refinished the wood clock in my kitchen I love how it turned out. I sanded and painted it barnyard red, distressed it and then glazed it with a metallic glaze in renaissance brown from Hobby Lobby. Now here's my question since the clock came out so good I'm on to a table in my upstairs hallway but not sure what type of glaze to use. What type did you use on your pieces? Martina
I love this project...you did a very authentic job. I found you on Much to do with Nothing but I actually had already read your post some time ago. Nice to come across it again...makes me want to do my china cabinet. It's fun working with paint and distressing and refreshing!

Forgive me for my niaveness, but I am considering doing my daughters bureau over and love this look, but do you have a page with a step by step guide for this that I can follow. Or do you know of any other resources that would be good for beginners? Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteThis is the only step by step I did on this chest. Just sand the gloss off paint two coats of paint and sand in places you want distressed then wax with minwax paste wax.
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought..Oh no she didn't just paint over such a beautiful piece, but when I saw the after photo I really could see the beauty was much more accented! Very good job!
