This is the before shot....boring
The after is much better. I primed with a gray primer found in the oops pile at Home Depot. Followed by four coats of the red paint. I will never use Martha Stewart paint again. It would not have taken four coats on top of primer if I had gotten a quality paint. Well, I had never used it before and thought I would give it a try. We learn by trial and error.
New bird from Hobby Lobby half price. Copied my sister, she had one.
Found this urn on sale at a local decor store and thought it would look nice in this
corner across from my bold yellow cabinet in the opposite corner. Filled it with some hydrangeas.
Close up of the detail of the crackled finish.
Thanks so much for all your wonderful comments. I really do appreciate them. I am trying to do better about visiting your blogs, too. Finished the trim painting today. One job just leads to another.

I love the new color on the shutters - what a great shot of happiness into your already beautiful room! :) I have been adding alot of pops of red into my decor this spring too - just brings the rooms to life.
ReplyDeleteLoved the before but the after is GORGEOUS! They just scream YUMMY in their new red color! The whole corner just pops now and your table...I covet this piece...looks amazing with the red as a backdrop!

WOW those went from drab to fab in a blink of an eye. I used Martha paint once years ago...in fact I think on luver doors in our Florida home...it was a nightmare....I do remember. They look fabulous Kim!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great!!! Of course, anything you do looks great Kim!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah..I'm feeling it...the perfect injection of color.
ReplyDeleteThose shutters really needed to be red! Thanks for all your paint tips - I'll be needing them soon for a project.
ReplyDeleteKim, they look fantastic in your sunroom!! I do know that red paint is a pain in the behind. Anytime I have ever painted anything red it has taken 3 to 4 coats so maybe it was not just the paint but the color "red".
ReplyDeleteYou are so much like me, always looking for something to do.
I would love to chat sometime.
xo
LeAnn

Trimwork! Uuggh! You poor thing! Anyway, I love your red shutters! They look fantastic! You have the best sunroom! Looks like you are getting a fresh new look all over!
ReplyDeleteHi Kim. I have been busy painting this week so I am behind in my blog reading. I LOVE the red. Just the right pop of color. We have so much of the same decorating style. You have the same rooster lamp as I do, I have Paula's new decorating book, and I saw a Raymond Waites plate that I use to have. We could really be decorating buddies if I lived back in the wonderful state of Georgia. I will be visiting Georgia in a few weeks. It will be nice to be 'home' again.
ReplyDeleteshutters look great! Love the bird, and can I just say... your blog header, is that your dog? Adorable! I think he/she looks like Dolly Parton. Is that silly? probably, but I'm silly!
ReplyDeletegail
How many time can I say really? I REALLY REALlY, on and on, love the red shutters..That corner is so inviting..
ReplyDeleteWe use MS red paint on a wall and it took 4 coats there too...Ben Moore took one coat.
The red really pops! It looks beautiful! ♥

ReplyDeleteWhat a transformation! I don't think I remember your screen before. I sure won't forget them! As always absolutley beautiful. Could you send some energy my way!
ReplyDeleteThe red color really pops out at you! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteKim Love the shutters and the pop of red. You are just becoming the bright colored gal. Love it! It is sooo perfect for your house. I know red is the hardest color to cover with. I have had professional painters bid jobs of red rooms and they always bid 4 coats to cover. Not quite sure why but it is a bear of a color to paint with. It helps to tint the primer red also, now I tell you right?!! Love the shutters they are PERFECTION!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE RED! It is my favorite color and those shutters really POP! Excellent job!
ReplyDeleteLove your shutters in the new red color!!!! The new little birdie is sooooo cute too! Your sunroom is absolutely gorgoues....I am completely envious! LOL

Best wishes,
Anna
Anna's S-words
They look fantastic in red. Thanks for the warning about the crummy paint.
ReplyDeleteThe red is perfect for that room. And I am a red lover so my eyes gravitate to anything red. I made a Hobby Lobby stop yesterday! I could wonder that place all day.

ReplyDeleteAnd btw, I LOVE this room!
Lou Cinda :)
The red is wonderful. I love it. It really brightens up that corner. You've got the most gorgeous room there.
ReplyDeleteThe red looks awesome! Everything on the table *pops* in front of it now! Very nice :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you had drama with the MS paint - I used it in my kitchen and we only did 2 coats over the previous white paint. Maybe it was a bad batch?
Simply Stunning Shutters from a Stylish and Savvy Southerner!

Natasha.
xo
the red is fab, makes that whole corner stand out.
ReplyDeletethe red gives it spunk! i dig it. :]

ReplyDeleteThe new paint color looks great! I thought at first your husband was going to put a picture rail - but, I them remembered seeing this technique - it looks very, very good.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure about all Habitat stores - there's actually a couple not too far from me. They do have a lot of architectural things - doors, lighting etc...but, also furniture and accessories - from model homes and donations! Thanks for visiting my blog!
Hope you find more good things!
Kathy
The colors in that room are so wonderful and the red on the shutters just adds another pop of WOW. Really nicely done. Your bird and urn accents are perfect!
ReplyDeleteI have a set that hide the Rock Band drums in my family room (I hate having them visible all the time) and was just thinking about painting them red! I love it! They kind of just blend with the wall now. Thanks for the inspiration to do it!

I'm finally have some free time and able to read more S posts :o) I'd love for you to stop over :o)
I read on your profile that you are empty nesters. We are empty nesters too :o)
You have an amazing sense of style and color - love the pop of red and yellow in your room.
ReplyDeleteKim, This is comment is 2 years overdo. Love all the color and your 2010 kitchen update. Isn't is funny? I think about 2007 is when I started using a lot of red and gold in my decor. Now everyone is going in the oppositie direction, lighter palettes. I bet this shutter is now painted with Annie Sloan pating in something off white or gray?
ReplyDeleteIt's interestingn how we elvove and our tastes change isn't it?
Love your blog!
~Sandy
