The bookcase in the sitting room, that I just showed you here, was lacking something for me. I did not like the look of the veneer wood on the back of the bookcase so I decided to add some texture to it.
I went to Hobby Lobby and bought this cardboard
and this burlap
cut the cardboard and burlap to size and glued and taped the burlap on
and voila now it looks like this.
I love the texture this added.
I love how it turned out. If I ever want to change the fabric or remove it all together I just pull each piece
of covered cardboard out.
of covered cardboard out.
Thank you dear for helping me with my latest crazy project.

Y'all come back now,

Kim that is such an amazing change. I love the texture and subtle color. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful Kim. I like how easy it is to change out, if you like, down the road.
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing with toile and foam core in the cabinet top, that goes with the base we moved to the living room.
What a great idea, no paint to remove if you change your mind!
ReplyDeleteCarol
Looks great, Kim! I love the texture too and so simple to do!..Christine
ReplyDeleteHi Kim! We made it back home. I need to find something to blog about!
ReplyDeleteThis turned out just great. I never understood why they put the veneer on the back when the rest of my armoire is wood.
I am just catching up. The sitting room turned out nice, too!
Oh Kim...this is wonderful! I have been thinking of having the backs of all of my shelving painted and antiqued...may be I will try this instead! The burlap is gorgeous but the possibilities are endless!
ReplyDeleteYou are always full of inspiration!
Enjoy!
Cathy
Hey, Kim! Love the transformation. You just inspired me because I got a hutch that I adore, but I don't like the mirrored background...I'm so covering it!!! I was trying to figure out how to get material on there, you just showed me...love you!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, do you know the name of the color of your dining table? I love it and yellow is hard to pick. I'm also looking for a complimentary red. If you have names, I'd love them.
Thanks and keep up the great work with all your project,
Mari
We need to meet one of these days since we are so close!
My goodness Kim you are talented and very creative! I LOVE this! Gorgeous change and your entire bookcase is stunning. :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous. I love the look. I've been wanting to do something to the back of my bookcases, but was worried that wallpaper would ruin the wood if I changed my mind. What a great solution and I love the look. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteKim, I love it! I just might steal this idea for the bookcase in my living room! Our house went on the MLS this morning & someone came to see it this afternoon with an hours notice :/ They liked it & are coming back for a 2nd look! I am surprised there was any interest so soon! I would be very happy if we got lucky & sold it quickly!!!
ReplyDeleteVery well done. I came within a minute of buying a bookcase in a thrift store today but someone else got it due to my thinking slowing...I like to ponder. Next time I will get it and use your method of covering the back. Thanks ~olive
ReplyDeleteMy heck girl...you are so full of great ideas! I don't like burlap much but I love it here. I need to do this...it made a world of difference...very nice! :D
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! I have several places I need to do this to!
ReplyDeleteKim, you have the best ideas! This looks great. I think I might try it on my breakfast room hutch.
ReplyDeleteLove the burlap! I have done that with red toile in one cabinet and red checked in another. But that burlap....I am loving that!!
ReplyDeletePenny
OMG Kim that's fabulous. You are seriously one talented and creative lady. Shame you live so far away, I could get you over to redecorate my house.
ReplyDeleteRegards

Hi Kim,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea and it looks great!
hugs
Sissie
This looks great! I have seen this technique used many times before but usually with decorative fabric. I love the texture that the burlap gives this background but with a solid color! I will have to store this one in my memory bank! Great Idea!!!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Can't wait to try this idea out on my entertainment unit. I have some shelves that need some texture and color added, too. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteReally like what you did. I have seen several bloggers covering cardboard/poster board/etc., with fabric or paper, so it can be changed out easily and I love the idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. Looks super!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Nellie
I love the burlap backing. I'm going to use to back a frame so it was nice to see your project complete. The bookcase looks great.
ReplyDeleteA little behind on my reads! What an awesome idea! I love the way it adds texture to your shelves :)
ReplyDeleteHope you're keeping cool with this crazy weather!!
Wendy
My gosh, woman!!! Where do you get these awesome ideas! That makes all the difference in the world! I love it!
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteI have also thought of doing this with a built in bookcase of ours. I hadn't thought to put it on cardboard...great idea! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteAdding texture always adds interest. The bookshelves have some personality and really set off your books and pretties!
ReplyDeleteYou just can't go wrong with burlap! The new look is awesome, and so easy to change when the mood strikes you. Great trick, thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the texture the burlap gives to your bookcase~ what a quick instant update :-)
ReplyDeleteNow aren't you creative Ms. Kim? ;-) That did turn out fabulous.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea...easy, quick and appealing..who could ask for more.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I love the subtle change it adds to the bookshelf. And the texture really warms things up.
ReplyDeleteAren't you so cleaver? That is a great project. What a nice look your bookcase has now. :)
ReplyDeleteDonna
Hi Kimmie! Oh, look at you, the smartest little one! I love the change this burlap makes to the back of your bookshelves! I did this to mine in the den, but used fabric.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice little hubby to go to town for you like this. Now, Kim, I just love how you dress your shelves - they look so pretty and I love those little figurines that are all poked in there.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Clever idea and the results are dramatic.
ReplyDeleteLooks great, what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteKatherine
I just love this project idea....simple, cheap and looks like a million bucks when done!
ReplyDeleteThis came out great!!! I love the idea. I have bookshelves that I might just have to try this on!! LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! I did something similar to this project to an old cabinet that I turned into a pantry. I painted it white and backed the shelves on top with a piece of plywood covered with a light blue toile fabric. I loved the result, and I love that result on yours! The texture gives it just the right touch.
ReplyDeleteWhat next?.....you are too clever, by half! That is such a good idea, and I'm sure you'll have lots of us imitating!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!!
ReplyDeleteWell, how clever is that, Kim?! Great project...the burlap looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteOh Kim I just love it!! It just makes that piece!! The texture... oh ya!! You did a great job, well so did the hubby for putting it on. How fun to be able to take it off and change it when you feel also. Good job!
ReplyDeleteHa Kim'
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful!!
Well done!!
I wish you a verry nice garden day!
Yolanda
Fabulous idea, I never would have thought to do that! Love the new look! ~Liz
ReplyDeleteI tried to leave a comment twice yesterday, but blogger was moving at a snail's pace. I am so glad that you found a solution for your shelves. They look nice and at a fraction of the price of grass cloth.
ReplyDelete-Rene
That looks really nice...I wish I had done something like that on the back of my bookshelf. I might have to pull the back off and do something to it now. It really makes the items on display stand out!
ReplyDeleteKim this looks terrific! This is why I love your blog. You are so innovative and man this looks great!
ReplyDeleteKim,
ReplyDeleteYour shelf transformation is gorgeous!!!!!
What a wonderful addition. It takes your shelves to a new level in chic! And don't you think it makes what you display seem more important? Sure does to me.
I have been toying with either painting or covering the back of my built-ins. Now seeing how beautiful yours look I just might opt for covering them with fabric.
One thing I was wondering... how close did you measure? Exact or about 1/8" smaller?
Thanks for the inspiration.
Yvonne
Very nice! Thank you for sharing. I have the same problem with my bookshelves and was debating on painting the backs. Now I think I will try your method...its a quicker change!
ReplyDeleteLove it... love it! Why didn't I think of that????
ReplyDeleteGreat backdrop, it makes your display pieces really stand out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by NL today,
Maggie
Oh my that is wonderful. What a great idea. I love anything burlap and think three of my last four projects have been with burlap. Might have to be my next project, too!
ReplyDelete~~Nancy~~
What a great idea Kim it makes all your pretties really stand out!! I just did my dinning room hutch with beadboard and painted it I love how it looks!
ReplyDeleteWow Kim, I LOVE this!! I would like to live in your head for awhile and see how you come up with these great ideas. I've seen people put fabric & paint (as you have suggested for me & I'm still teetering) but this burlap looks AWESOME!! I think you might just be a trendsetter on this one! :)

ReplyDeleteAmazing idea! I love how the burlap provides such a low cost yet inviting back drop!
ReplyDeleteI love it too! I never would have thought of that. And how great that is is easily changed. Fabulous project!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea and it looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and I just wanted to let you know I left you a little something on my blog! : )
ReplyDeleteI love the texture and color of burlap (thought that can be almost any color these days... I like the one you chose)! We used burlap on Little Man's table decorations and it turned out so cute!
ReplyDeleteLOVE burlap!! I did a mini post today on some burlap I used in a very simple way! You are right, the texture is wonderful! Yours looks fabulous and such a great idea!!
ReplyDeleteLou Cinda :)
What a great project! Your are right... the texture of the fabric adds a lot. Thnaks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteKim that looks great! It really lightened things up and made your pretties more visible.
ReplyDeleteKim I reallllly like the change I think the textured background makes all of your lovely porcelain pieces stand out more!! Great idea and job!! Kathysue

It looks great Kim. You always make me feel like a slacker! You get so many things done and I just don't know how you do it!
ReplyDeleteLove the burlap look in your bookcase...fabulous.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Please come by and join my first ever link party Vintage Suitcase Friday!
ReplyDeleteI love having a different background for bookcases. Our white ones are all painted a contrasting color in our library and living room. In my classroom I put red gingham on the backs of those bookcases. Love what you did!
ReplyDeleteThat looks so beautiful. I love how the items on the shelf stand out against the lighter color. Fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWell done, Kim!
ReplyDeleteI just staple the fabric right to the back. I think your way is smarter. Thanks for the idea.
XO

ReplyDeleteHi Kim! It's amazing what a simple change can do! Much fresher, items show better and love the little hit of texture! Your previous post is absolutely beautiful - as gorgeous outside as in! Enjoy the weekend - sincerely, Jeannette
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, that looks great! I love the look of lining the back of a bookcase or hutch. I have lined almost all of mine with different things(fabric, wrapping paper, scrapbook paper), but never burlap...I do love the look and the texture it brought to your shelves. I may have to try that next!!!
ReplyDelete:) Michelle
OMGosh this is a great idea and changed the look so easily.
