I painted and distressed this antique sideboard several months ago, but it was just not looking right. It was too new looking instead of old. So I brought out my metallic bronze glaze and started brushing it on in places and taking it back off.
I am wanting to paint and glaze everything in sight. I truly found something I love to do. Now, like Mr. Savvy said, I just need to make money doing it. Right now I am just enjoying making some things look better in our home.
This is how it looked before I started adding more glaze to it. O.k., but kind of boring.
I stopped to take some pictures of how it looks while I am adding glaze to it. This is how I was brushing it on and then I take a damp rag that is almost dry and start taking it off.
This shows how it looks after taking some of the glaze back off. You just have to kind of play with it. If you take too much off just put some more on. I also sanded some more places to age it more.
Here you can see the top drawer is done and the bottom one is not done yet.
I sanded it extra above the key hole where it would naturally have the finish worn off.
This is how the glaze highlights the crevices.
I love the subtle sheen of this metallic glaze and how it brings out the details.
I did extra heavy sanding on the legs that would be normally knocked up.
Here is the after.
This shot really portrays the true color.
I still need to do something with the knobs. I can't take them off. I can't even open these drawers without some of the trim coming off. This piece is really old and needs to be repaired. I may paint the knobs a dark brown by hand.
The products I used are: Benjamin Moore semi gloss paint in Georgian Green
brushed and rolled on. Valspar glaze in Mocha from Lowes.
Decor Art Elegant Finish Metallic Glaze in Renaissance Brown found at Hobby Lobby.
Wow...I love the finish. I normally paint everyhing white, I might have to be brave and try something new.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! You are very talented in furniture refinishing.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim!
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely piece and you made it even prettier with your paint treatment!
Manuela
It really does look good Kim and I'm just snickering at the thought of Mr. Savvy and my husband having a few moments together to talk about our projects. I'm sure they would make fast friends.

ReplyDeleteThis is such a pretty piece Kim. You really enhanced the detail with the glaze. Love it. Have you ever tried Rub n Buff? It might work well on your hardware.

ReplyDeleteKIM-OMGosh! I absolutely LOVE this piece. I don't care if the drawers ever open. It is one of my favorites that I have seen re-done with the glazing! Great job...and you are right-it did looke very nice before but WOW! What a difference that glazing made. I have to go back and re-read it to see which glaze you used first...or if you mixed them. I want a piece tha looks just-like-that! Diana
ReplyDeleteYou were right! It looks so much better (older) now with the glaze. I love glaze!
ReplyDeleteI was going to tell you to use rub and buff for the knobs and Anita already mentioned it. It's no wonder Anita and I are blogger friends. : )
ReplyDeleteI loved it before but after you added that glaze, it's beautiful!

hugs
Sissie

Oh Kim, what a fabulous finish, your piece looks fantastic! You amaze me with all you do girl!
ReplyDeleteNancy
I love what you did with the glaze! I used that same glaze on my bathroom walls when I did the texture. In fact, I've used it on several walls but never on furniture, so I'll have to try it.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim! Oh, this piece turned out so beautiful! I love the glazing you've done on it! It really is a pretty piece of furniture and the darker glaze makes all those little details really show up! You're just good at everything! Is there anything you can't do? :)
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
I liked it before but I think I like it more now. I agree that the knobs could use some contrast. I LOVE that metallic glaze. I have used it on all kinds of things and it is just great.
ReplyDeleteI have been talking to other bloggers about making over furniture to sell. I think I am going to try but I am always afraid someone won't like my work. They are encouraging me to try so after the boys start school I am going to look for some quality pieces for cheap and see what happens! I know you could do it, too!
Looks fantastic Kim! It looked nice before, but now it looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteLove what you've done with this piece...another talent! .. great color combination...really you have a way of making things come together in such a romantic, cozy, warm way.
ReplyDeleteKim, you've accidentally found another calling. (Of course blogging is one!) Look at Miss Mustard Seed. She does well with her furniture. I can see you doing this for others. Build yourself a little shop out by the pond... Wish you were close enough to do it for me! I'd have you in here in a heartbeat with my checkbook out!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
It amazes me that you can take something that already looks amazing and make it look even more amazing, you da man Kim, rather, you da WOMAN Kim!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat Glazing!! You are amazing, Kim.
ReplyDeleteThis piece is just gorgeous. You did a wonderful job!
ReplyDeletePartying with you tonight. Stop by for a visit.
It is so great watching your skills grow in this blog...I used to do lots of antiquing and decorative painting and there is a super finish you can get using floor wax and any kind of artist oil paint (in the tube kind) just add the color of paint to the wax and mix it up with your palette knife...apply...let dry...buff...This is probably the toughest finish I have ever used. I once did a bathroom vanity and it was perfect for that...I have seen people use it on their kitchen cabinets...Just thought you might want to try this method...there are so many artists pigments available that colors are infinite...
ReplyDeleteThis is really a beautiful piece, Kim~ you have done a wonderful job on the finish!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great. You did a good job.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, You took a beautiful piece and made it even more so! isn't it funny how glaze makes everything look better? I have been glazing everything in sight. If you figure out a way to make a living doing this keep me in mind as your business partner! Hugs, Sherry

ReplyDeleteGorgeous! You are so good at it!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful piece! Your glazing is just right....I especially love that you left the top stained dark!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing this technique... especially "how" to do it and what you use. A great transformation. ...Karen
ReplyDeleteKim,
ReplyDeleteYour buffet looks great after the glazing. Tell Mr. Savvy that I used to make a lot of money refinishing furniture. I hunted for old pieces at Goodwill, etc. then painted and distressed them. Sold them in my space that I rented in an antique mall. I did it for about 10 years. Your garage will never be the same though....Think about it!
What a beautiful piece now...a transformation! I love it! ♥
ReplyDeleteYour project is awesome! I wish I owned it. Now I am inspired to find something to transform in my house.
ReplyDeleteYour sideboard is precious as can be and the antiquing you did is the best job I've seen. It's so authentic looking, not like many you see around that look so contrived. Can't wait to try it!

ReplyDeleteKim, I love how the extra glazing adds just the right amount of age to your beautiful piece! It's funny how little things can really transform something that is already pretty into something even more beautiful!

ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHi Kim! I'm new to your blog and SO GLAD I found it. I linked over from Chic on A Shoestring. I really like the finish you did on this buffet. It is absolutely gorgeous! I'm in the middle of sanding a large armoire and planned on doing the same glazing/sanding/aging technique. I just hadn't decided on a glaze yet and I love the metallic one you used. We don't have a Hobby Lobby, maybe Michael's carries it or hopefully I can come up with my own concoction that will look just as nice.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to following and checking out your older posts.
Have a blessed weekend!
Missy
Kim what a beautiful job love it!
ReplyDeleteKim, It's gorgeous! What a great piece....and you were right on with that glaze! Thanks so much for linking up to Style Feature Saturday...it's an honor! -shaunna :)
ReplyDeleteI love how this piece came out. It looks scary to put that much glaze on at first. Thanks for the great tutorial.
ReplyDeleteThe transformation is incredible. It was a lovely piece to begin with but what you have done with the antiqueing has made it an amazing piece. The glazing you have done is magnificent.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim,
ReplyDeleteI keep staring at this trying to get some inspiration and courage to stain the top of my buffet. Is mine a buffet or sideboard? Or is it the same thing?? I'm going to purchase the stain tomorrow, one step further, wish me luck!
Lisa
Hi Kim, and thanks for the inspiration! I have a old chest of drawers, actually mine when I was a baby. And it desperately needs a makeover. I have been thinking about a white/cream color but thought it too bold. Now I see what I can do!
ReplyDeleteYour husband sounds like mine. And he is right, you could definitely make money selling this. You have a wonderful eye for style.
