.......shining from my newly refinished lamps. My latest project is two lamps that I have aged with layers of paint and glaze.
This is what they originally looked like. Just an aged brass looking finish.
First they were primed.
Then I painted on a coat of silver mist by Sherwin Williams in satin.
Then I dabbed on green sage also by Sherwin Williams in a satin finish.
These are the paints I used. I will let you in on a little secret because Sherwin Williams doesn't usually just come out and tell you this. You can have any color you want mixed in their sample size. Their sample size is a pint. It isn't the little bitty cup of paint like you get from Benjamin Moore and others. It is a whole pint which is more that enough for most projects. The price is only $4.67!!!! Just tell them you want a sample and what color and they will mix it for you.
I sanded a few places and then started glazing with Valspar glaze in mocha from Lowes.
This shows how heavy I put it on and then I take a rag and dab and wipe some of it off.
Here you can see the spots I sanded and how it takes the glaze.
After I finished glazing I then added some of the metallic bronze glaze I had to add some sheen. Here you can see the layers on the finished lamp base.
I love how these turned out.
Here they are in the master bedroom.
Those are awesome Kim!~ I love the color and the glaze technique. You are the master at that!
ReplyDeleteKim those lamps are just awesome girl..Do you ever stop working I swear you make me tired just watching all you do girl..Oh I better go take a nap now ha ha!! Just beautiful my friend..Hope you had a GREAT weekend..Hugs and smiles Gl♥ria
ReplyDeleteThe lamps turned out really pretty! I think the key is layering. Really give it depth.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny though, I was going to post the same thing about SW samples being so generous. I just stopped in the other day to get a Creamy sample for my cabinets. I had forgotten how large their samples are next to BM. You get so much more!
Oh Kim, they look great!! Love the layers of color! I did something kind of like that with our silver lamps in the family room. You are so talented!!
ReplyDeleteThose turned out beautifully Kim!
ReplyDeleteI just love the colors you used and they look so expensive and pretty sitting on your table!
Just love it!
Cindy
They look wonderful, Kim. I don't know how you figure all these things out - the staining, how much to use etc. You certainly have a gift for what you do.
ReplyDeleteThese are great! You really do have a wonderful talent for this!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Sherwin Williams tip.

Kim they look GORGEOUS! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, Kimmie! These are so pretty! I've got to learn how to glaze! You do such fantastic work! :) I'm a fan, can you tell?
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
shelia ;)
Kim, you are a painting and glazing fool these days and each project is more beautiful than the last! Your lamps look amazing and I love the tassels too!
ReplyDeleteKat :)
Love the transformation!
ReplyDeleteKim-You did a great job with those. I have never purchased SW paint samples before. I often purchase Benjamin Moore and also I have bought several quart sizes from Home Dept. Now I will have a whole new outlet. AND I have to get some of that staining glaze from Lowes when I get down there. Our closest one is about 35 miles away. And I do love their store.
ReplyDeleteNow...if I could only slap a little paint on myself and sand a bit off here and there-Lord...would I look good! Diana
Kim you are a painting and glazing machine, you will be able to teach classes on the subject!! What a transformation!! KATHYSUE
ReplyDeleteKim,
ReplyDeleteYou do such a great job on all your projects. Hopefully, if I quit part-time work for good, someday, I might have time to get back into doing some projects :)
Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWow, super job and I love the height they have and how slender they are. Hey if I can't be slender at least my lamps can be!
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial too.
You are so good at this, Kim. The lamps look fab. I would swim but I have been sick all day. This is the first time I got out of bed. Must have been from that ordeal from the other night but the funny thin is my mom is ok. If you want to know what I am talking about, go visit my blog below before this...Christine
ReplyDeleteKim, I am in awe and amazed. YOu have got this paint thing down pat. I love the look of the lamps. So pretty. Thanks for the info about Sherwin Williams also. I had no idea.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your gracious comments about my breakfastroom wall. I really appreciate it. Hugs, Marty
Hi Kim- I love how the lamps came out. You have refinishing talent!!! Thanks for the tip on the sample sizes of SW paint.
ReplyDeleteMy best - Diane
I'm very impressed. The lamps look wonderful. I've never tackled this kind of project and appreciate your tutorial. Great job!
ReplyDeleteSusan
Mr. Savvy is right you really need to start selling some of your pieces Kim. olive♥
ReplyDeleteThose look truly awesome Kim! Every shot looked better than the last, so the key is layering over and over . I will share a tip that I got from our faux finisher..she worked for SW for years and says that the samples don't actually have the same paint properties as a full can, so you won't want to try and use it for a wall..just wont be the same high quality, just the same color. I have a full shelf of those sample quarts that I need to use up in some major craft project! It really helps when you are trying to decide on the right color!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the paint tip yahoo, you are the glaze master!! I would never think of using all of those colors and glazes!
ReplyDeleteCarol
Wow! You did a great job on the lamps! I really do like them! Thanks for the info about SW.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
Those are absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeleteVery nice!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Kim-
ReplyDeleteYou are so talented.

White Spray Paint
Wow, these turned out great, Kim! I'm remembering the pint trick for SW! Good stuff to know! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Kim and thanks for the tip about the paint!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Kim you are good with a paintbrush! Wonderful transformation. The depth and richness achieved was acomplished with all of your wonderul layers of color and glaze. I have a small gold lamp that I am going to do the same.
ReplyDeleteWhat primer do you use?
Kudos to you!
Yvonne
Yvonne, I used Sherwin Williams primer just because I had some here. For large projects I usually use Kilz.
ReplyDeleteGreat revamp Kim! Yes I LOVE SW sample pints! They rock! My SW asked me what I do with all of mine, I have like 30, and they always tell me how they are not ment for painting projects and will not bond accordingly. I always smile and thank them for their warnings. I use them for everything from our kitchen island, the guest bedroom headboard to our bench in the dining room!
ReplyDeleteWow! Totally fabulous! A very nice job!
ReplyDeleteKim, Glad to see someone else paints and sands on their kitchen counter. The lamps look wonderful! You have been on a roll lately with many projects. xo, Sherry
ReplyDeleteYou are so good at this. I guess practice makes perfect and I need to start practicing on something! Wow...impressed, always.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! That's the one paint I believe I haven't tried yet. lol You did a fantastic job. Love the transformation! Thanks for sharing in the DIY Project Parade. ;)
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!

Your lamps look fantastic. I see a new career for you! You really have mastered the skill of glazing and antiqueing. Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYou are so talented!!! The lamps look really good. I need to stop painting everything white.
ReplyDeleteKim, these are awesome!! Beautiful job!! Seriously, wow.
ReplyDeleteI love how you share how you did your projects. Some of the other blogs I have followed do not... they want to charge you to even ask a question about a color of paint. I have put you at the top of my blog favorites. You are so talented...and THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us so we too, can create lovely things for our family/home.
ReplyDelete~ Lisa ~
Lisa, I don't understand why anyone would want to charge for information regarding a project we have worked on. That is why I blog is to share what I do and how I achieved the look. Thanks so much for the compliment.
ReplyDeleteAhh! I knew they were lamps but I had no idea how beautiful they would turn out! Fabulous! You are quite the expert at glazing and antiquing! I have been working on my lamp again that I glazed awhile back and still don't have it where I want it. You may have given me a few ideas. Love your color choices on those and they look great in your room!
ReplyDeleteYou are the glazing Queen! The lamps look fantastic. Not sure about painting them on top of your granite countertops though (coming from someone who has sanded and painted a big old plywood flag on top of my kitchen stove before).
ReplyDeleteYou are the glazing queen :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on the paint. That is great to know.
-Rene
Love the lamps! One of your furniture glazing projects inspired me awhile back, and I've been on a roll painting everything cream and glazing with brown house paint?! Thanks for the inspiration :)
