You have probably seen these, but I hadn't until I went to my sister's last week. She had these awesome books in a basket on her coffee table and I loved the different look to them. She bought a couple that were made like this at a local decor store for $7.95 each. What?! She realized she could make them for a whole lot cheaper. Then I copied her!! Thanks sis for the idea.
Aren't these great?
First you go to Good Will and buy some cheap books. I used the paperback ones for this project.
Rip the covers off and get some twine. You can use jute like I did or the twine that you wrap with. My sister used the twine and they look really good. I used this jute that I had on hand.
Now for a twist. I poured tea in a large bowl and placed the books in it to make the pages look older and to make the edges ripple.
Then I place them on a towel to dry. Ignore the filthy towel.
Then you just take a very long piece of twine and start tying it around the books like you would put ribbon around a package. Wrap horizontally and then vertically and flip it over back and forth until you have it wrapped several times.
Then tie a knot on the back side and cut off the extra length left over.
Just place them in a basket or a bowl like I did or stack them on the table or a shelf or mantel.
Simple project and I love the look.
Books $1.50 apiece.
Jute was already on hand.

Oh my! I love it! I am off to the thrift store...specifically to look for candle sticks! Now I need to find some books! Hope you read Tess of the D'urburvilles before you wrapped it! lol It's one of my favorite books! ♥
ReplyDeleteLOVE this idea ... I know what I will be doing today, hehehe. Also, looks like you were watching Oprah. That was such a good show. Fun to see everyone together ~

Kim I spied this idea at your sissy's house, I loved it. I ran out of twine so I do have to get me some!!~ The books look awesome.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, that is a really good idea! They look great. I love the big bowl you have them in.
ReplyDeleteKathy
Well I haven't seen these yet! Kim, you're right at the cutting edge of decorating all the time. How cute!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Cute idea. I've seen something similar on a couple of blogs, but love them tea stained. Great idea. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful, Kim! Have you seen the ones at the Q of H in Alpharetta that look like they went through the washer and dryer? lol I love those! Hope you are having a great week!...hugs...Debbie
ReplyDeleteOH! We of great minds think alike. I picked up several at GW the other day too...I hope to put them together this weekend. Mine are pretty aged looking already..so I may not have to tea dye them. LOVE YOURS- Diana
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea! Thank you for sharing. My daughter is coming home for a visit this weekend and we now have a PROJECT!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteFabulous Kim! I bet I have some old paperbacks in the basement just moldering away. I think I'll give this a try! Love the jute twine with this.
ReplyDeleteThose are really cute Kim. I haven't seen that trick.
ReplyDeleteSherry
I love that. So unique.
ReplyDeleteBrooke
Hey! Yours turned out great! I like the idea of dying them in tea to age them. I should've tried that. It's kind of a fun project isn't it? I love something easy and cheap with a big impact. I just changed up my picture behind my chair in the family room too. I didn't want all that color in the picture, so I covered it with drop cloth fabric (glued the edges inside the frame)then cut my small burlap pillow cover front off and glued it in the center of the frame. Then painted and glazed the frame blue (like my lamps). Then I added a beige braid trim on the inside of the frame and outside edge of the burlap. Now it looks like a unique french picture of something I collected.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim! This is pretty cool. Never seen anything like this before!
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia;)
I did this idea too, but wrapped mine in a different pattern, and then added a black ribbon. They are so cute!
ReplyDeleteI had never thought of the tea - what a great project! Love them and they look great the way you displayed them. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love this craft project! Now I know what to do with all my hubby's paperbacks.

A great idea Kim...and I think that you are very crafty! :D
ReplyDeleteVery cute idea! I've already got the old books on hand I could use and some already wrinkled from leaving them out in the rain too! LOL! Just don't have the twine...yet!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!!!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic, Kim!!
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to make some of these for my staging props!!
I have to use books that are "neutral" in topic, so I am quite picky about the title--but this way, with the cover ripped off, who cares?!!?
Smart.
Just smart.
Hugs,
~me
Kim, you and your sister are both so clever. I've seen old books without their covers in several shops and catalogs lately, but never wrapped in twine the way you did, so pretty! Thanks for the wonderful tutorial!
ReplyDeleteKat :)
Genius! I have never seen books like this, but I can imagine that now I will see them everywhere. Thanks for the tutorial.

ReplyDeleteGreat idea and very cute! I love that you tea stained them, too!
ReplyDeleteXO,

Fun! I've been a fan lately of wrapping a few books together with one piece of twine, but this adds a whole new dimension. Love it! Just might have to borrow this. :) Have a great day, Becca

This is so cute..but..I am so hooked on book covers! I shop for books in wonderful conditions but every now and then I run across one that is NOT perfect but comes home with me anyway. Usually costs me about a quarter...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your sister's idea...and you have done a great job with yours. It's always great to see something different. Thank you for the inspiration! It is always welcome. And thank your sister too! (Aren't sister's GREAT?)
Mona
