I told y'all the other day that I am making a couple of changes in the dining room. One was done this weekend. I am only showing you the part I worked on. The ceiling medallion above our chandelier was just plain shiny white. Well, not anymore.
First I painted the whole thing with chalk paint in Old White.
After the chalk paint was dry I mixed some glaze with raw umber to age the piece. I mixed about three parts glaze to one part paint.
I used my old gelato plastic tubs that I saved to mix it in.
I used an artist type paint brush to paint the glaze on being sure to dab it in all the nooks and crannies.
Then I took a rag and started dabbing it back off.
Here is the whole piece finished with the brown glaze, but there is more.
To achieve the look I needed I mixed chalk paints Paris Gray and Old White about half and half to age the piece further.
I did a dry brush technique for this part. I just dabbed the brush on this paper towel to remove most of the paint from the brush. Then brushed over the piece and repeated until the entire piece was done.
I love the way this turned out. You can see part of the piece I was replicating beside it. Pretty close, huh?
So what do you think? Really looks old doesn't it? patting self on back
A peek at what is under that ceiling medallion.
Now on to project number two.
See the finished look HERE
Kim i love it!! It looks great.

I drop by your blog from time to time to see what you have 'going on'. But, I was at the beach this weekend, and had to read the blogs I follow by phone and spent quite a bit of time looking through older posts on your blog I have missed (due to having a 1 year old and 12 year old ;o) So, I just wanted to thank you for keeping me entertained. I do hope you have a chance to get to the beach soon (if it's still there after Irene). I found it interesting that your hubby is from Rabun. I have a friend that works at Rabun Gap school, and I'm assuming it's the same area. I was also wondering if you and Debbie at Confessions of a Plate Addict have ever met being that you're both in Atlanta and have similar interests? Seems like you might be 'soul sistas'. I found it ironic that you posted about 'Details' at the same time. Anyway, just wanted to pop in to say keep up the good work! Hope to find my groove again, one day, but until then, I'll be looking to you for inspiration! ;o)
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Kim.
ReplyDeleteI love the way all the details show up. Another job well done!
Stunning!!
ReplyDeleteOh Kim its absolutely gorgeous... your step by step instruction is very useful and it looks great...
ReplyDeletehope you like to visit again for a pretty pincushion

I bought a very similar medallion earlier this summer to put in my dining room. I painted it pink to go with the pink ceiling but it's still sitting on the kitchen counter waiting to go up. With all the sick people in my life right now....I can't seem to get to any projects. Soon I hope. I can't wait to see that chandelier. I'm loving the drops hanging from it!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty -- excited to see the chandelier
ReplyDeleteOh, you are such a tease showing us just a little drop from that chandy! I think you're a genius with the painting techniques. Can't wait to see the two pieces together.
ReplyDeleteI love it Kim. I am intrigued now!
ReplyDeleteI am working on a project today but not nearly as much fun or pretty as yours....staining new deck boards...ugh! I love light medallions and your redo is fabulous! ~

ReplyDeleteBrenda
I have a question, have not done much painting, but I have a medicine cabinet that is white and I would like to paint this Black, would you recommend, spray or brush for this project. It is an inexpensive cabinet with melamine ....
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your time.
Kathy
I love your chalk paint projects. I have an old sea chest - great piece, huge, looks just like a pirate chest. It is painted solid black currently. I want to bring it into my bedroom and cedar line it for blanket storage. What paint treatment would you dream up? my bedroom is ivory cream with chocolate as the secondary color. Then pops of citron green and all colors of pinks and fuschia. I have an ivory cottage style poster bed and chest with chocolate brown desk & 2 brown chairs.
ReplyDeleteLook forward to your idea(s)! Remember I'm a novice!
Love this. I am oohhhhhhing and ahhhhhing already. Can't wait to see the rest of the project.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to take a second to say "It is about time!!" I can't wait to see that chandelier and the medallion is going to look awesome in there.
ReplyDeleteI have tried to catch up on all your posts but not enough time to comment! Everything is looking as wonderful as ever!
Kathy, hopefully you will look here for an answer since you have no reply comment blogger. Spray paint for plastic would probably be your best bet.
ReplyDeleteSeashellis,
ReplyDeleteHard to say without seeing it, but Old White chalk paint is a beautiful ivory that you can brush all over in two coats maybe more to cover the black. You can leave it like that and wax with clear wax or sand some back off to distress it and then wax.
wow looks so neat...I love it...can't wait to see more
ReplyDeleteYou did a GREAT job on it! It looks VERY old and perfect! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteWow, Kim, awesome! You've nearly inspired me to start hammering on my walls. You know, to create that aged villa look. Can't wait to see the rest of your dining room!

This is great Kim!! Now I wish I had done the one in the dining room this way! Now I would have to decide if I wanted to work on it without taking it down. This is just beautiful and can not wait to see the new chandy!!
ReplyDeleteKim, that finish is spectacular. I thought it looked great after the glazing, but the dry brushing took it to another level. Really nice!
