My verbena never completely went dormant this winter. It never got cold enough and now it looks like it has been given some doses of steroids. I have to keep looking at the calender to remind myself that it is only mid March.
Now only look at the pretty flowers and not my grass. I basically don't have much grass anymore. I have thousands upon thousands of weeds so I will not be showing you the yard anytime soon. It needs some major work. We have done everything we know to do to our yard to prevent weeds, but the weeds won.
See the problem is the ground never got cold enough long enough to kill some of the weeds. This is the worst our yard has been in sixteen years. See the pretty cardinals in the distance?
See the busy bee? The verbena is covered in bees all day long doing their thing.
Another problem is I can't even mow the yard to at least mow the weeds down because our mower had to go to the lawnmower doctor. Yep, I got on it to cut the yard and it would not start. Found out the starter had gone bad so it will cost us over three hundred dollars when they deliver it back to our house hopefully by the weekend.
Spring is my favorite time of year. It means new life and new growth. This bird house has been here for years and it is full of nesting material. We probably should clean it out for a new family to move in.
I took these pictures last week and now the leaves are growing so fast that everything is actually green already.
It's like one day it is all gray outside and then boom it is green.
My neighbor's red bud tree is just gorgeous this year.
I took this yesterday morning right after sun rise through my sun room window.
I am so glad they planted it a few years ago for me to enjoy this beautiful color from my sun room each year.
The pond has been coming back to life the past couple of weeks with this warm up. We have several gold fish that I haven't seen very much in the last few years and now they are nibbling on the stuff floating on the surface. I will have to see if I can get any pictures of them before they go back down in deeper water when it gets really hot.
Are you having unseasonably warm weather, too?
Hope you will join me for Wow Us Wednesdays.

It is the same here Kim.
ReplyDeleteOur lawn guy will not be able to help, so we are looking for someone else. Especially need help with J having health issues this Spring.
We had a landscaper out yesterday to bid on some garden work. Our beautiful gardens are looking ragged.
On the upside, the flowering shrubs and trees are are early and gorgeous this year.
Same type of weather here. I normally start mowing in late May and our lawn already needs it. Your Verbena is just beautiful, is it a perennial in your area? I want to plant my garden but am so afraid mother nature will trick us and give us another dose of snow.
ReplyDeleteIt has been an amazingly strange winter here too Kim...in the South, yes we do get those four seasons which I love. Winter is my least fav, so I am happy it was so short. Gorgeous photos..You will have your lawn looking good in no time.
ReplyDeleteI've had many things not die back over the "winter" here & I live in northern Indiana. I don't have any shrubs or trees blooming yet, but it won't be long. I have daffodils and Hyacinth going like crazy! Weeds are too, can't keep up and the moss has decided to take over my property. Need to get some lime in here STAT!
ReplyDeleteEverything is looking really beautiful, Kim. The blooms are so pretty!
ReplyDeleteThe weather is nuts here too. To have 80 degrees in Central NY in March is very rare!
No winter in NC, either! Your verbena is lovely.
ReplyDeleteLovely colour and it looks very healthy too - you're so lucky to have that in the Winter!
ReplyDeleteCan't believe the weather here either! We are 75+ degrees on Long Island! It is unbelievable and soooo wonderful!
ReplyDeleteSusan
I love it but I'm SO not ready! My verbena is growing like crazy and I've been weeding like crazy already! Oh dear...
ReplyDeleteLorraine
Here in Wisconsin we will be near eighty degrees today! My school has turned on the A/C several times already. And no snow days for us either - but we are loving this! However, it has been a huge financial setback for our tourism industry. On a happy note, your yard is looking great! Jane
ReplyDeleteSame here in NC.. the dafs have actually bloomed and are now gone- sheesh:(
ReplyDeleteBradford pear was a white blossum beauty for 4 days and now its all medium to large green leaves.
I've already mowed the yard 3 times.
weeds are out of control as are all my beds..3
on the bright side I am glad to see so many bees back as they have been very few the last few years..
we'll all deal and in a couple months it'll be lookin good again.
Hi Kim...beautiful post. Same here in KY 80 degrees and beautiful..
ReplyDeleteHardly no winter..loving it!
I am your neighbor over here in Alabama, and I can attest that it has been the strangest winter I have seen, I think!
ReplyDeleteI was just commenting to my daughter "yesterday there were no buds on our crepe myrtles, today 'BOOM'..." Your exact words!
Beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing!
~joy!

Yes, it is the same here. We had a couple of snow flurries this winter but it was mostly warm. Today is going to be in the high 70's. Happy First Day of Spring!
ReplyDeleteI am loving this early spring!! We had just a touch of winter, and that is fine with me. I'm in Tennessee and love having 4 seasons, but winter can be a very, very short season LOL.
ReplyDeleteMy husband has mowed the past 3 weeks I think.
Don't worry over the little things - like weeds. Enjoy the beautiful weather - and enjoy having Leila today. We need some new pictures of her (hint).
Yes Kim the same here. We should have been knee deep in snow. Very mild winter now reaching summer temps.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing those beautiful flowers and blossoms.
Your verbena is stunning! I'm so jealous. I wish I had that growing in my yard. Jimmy heard on the news, yesterday, that GA's pollen count is the highest it has ever been since documenting it! Wow! The nat'l news talked about the weather being so strange everywhere too. They said our weather patterns are changing and we will start to see warmer weather like this as a part of global warming.
ReplyDeleteToday is the first day of spring, and it actually looks like it outside. Yippee!!!
ReplyDeleteLots of weeds popping up in our yard too... ask me if I care. LOL It just is what it is this year. At least everyone has pretty blossoming trees to make up for it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful redbud. We haven't had any cold weather this year in Texas. Pollen is thick and everything is blooming right now. The mosquitoes are already out!
ReplyDeleteThe weeds have one in our lawn, as well Kim. It is just awful! We are having to mow the weeds twice a week because the "lawn" looks like it hasn't been mowed 2 days later. It's really strange to have the weather be so warm and the trees aren't even green yet.
ReplyDeleteI agree Kim it has been very strange weather here. I showed pics of my front yard yesterday with all the Azaleas blooming! Mid-March! Oh well I hope this doesn't mean summer will be awful. We need our yard mowed now also. Your verbena is gorgeous! Lucky you with that redbud tree to look at! hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteOur weather has been crazy too. Well, it's Louisiana so I should say crazier than normal! The pool is actually almost warm enough to swim. Your verbena looks great.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely pictures! Weather has been just as strange and unusual in south GA. We have cut the grass twice this year, makes me dread summer grass cutting!!
ReplyDeleteThat verbena looks absolutely gorgeous. While our winter wasn't warm enough for flowers to survive the weather was pretty great. The past few days were around 80 degrees and now things are starting to leaf out...so happy about that :)
ReplyDeleteYes, it is crazy weather. I had two kinds of parsley in the garden and they never even died. They are coming back really full and green. Bugs are everywhere. I am ready to plant but it is still too early...I think.
ReplyDeleteSherry
Same here,,, i walked around to the front of my house yesterday where I had a pot of flowers last year (that i left out in the "cold") and it didnt even kill them, they have already grown and bloomed. Everything is so pretty and green.
ReplyDeleteWow Kim, your Verbena is so beautiful!!! And your lawn looks WAY better than ours does...I think we have finally given up. You are so right, it was like mother nature woke up and spread color everywhere in the last week or so, everything is blooming here too which is kind of crazy for the first day of spring!
ReplyDeleteKat :)
It is the same here and they say ticks are going to be really bad this year because of the weather and allergies. I will have to keep a close eye on my pups because we get a lot ticks with the woods all around us.
ReplyDeleteEverything is blooming already they say we are 3 weeks earlier than normal.
I guess we can all call this the "winter that never was". I'm thinking bugs may be a problem after no deep freeze. ~ Maureen
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are gorgeous Kim. I love Verbena, it grows like a weed around here and lasts forever. Very strange weather we're having everywhere around the country this year. Thanks for sharing your beautiful outdoors.
ReplyDeleteNot much winter here in Kentucky either!! Lots of rain and dreary, but it looks like it's May here. Your pictures are georgous!
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring! Love your red bud tree. It's beautiful in bloom! Sadly we lost ours in the freak Oct. 29 blizzard we had in Central Mass. It would not have been flowering just yet here in NE though. We lost our autumnal cherry tree too. :( The weight of the snow on the leaves just split both trees into smithereens.... They literally exploded. I AM looking forward to replanting our backyard hopefully in April. Thankfully we have had a mild winter too. It's supposed to hit 80 degrees this week. Yikes! Have a good day!
ReplyDeleteWe had no winter this year and the flowers and bugs are letting us know it. The no-see'ums and mosquitos are already awful!
ReplyDeleteYikes, we had the same warm winter here and a very warm spring!!! My lawn is a mess and the weeds are incredible, not enough cold weather this year to kill the seeds...but everything is blooming at the same time, just so pretty!!! cleo
ReplyDeleteOh you get to see that gorgeous pond every day? Wow!! Love the signs of spring at your place. No cold weather here over winter, but that is not unusual here.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful....we have been blessed with some great weather too but its a little odd and makes me nervous about the kind of summer we are going to have. How beautiful to see all this color...lucky you!
ReplyDeleteYour yard is just bursting forth with beauty, Kim! Thanks for sharing those fabulous pictures of Sping. A group from our church had pre-planned a trip to Calloway Gardens in Georgia but had to move it UP two weeks (to this week)because things there were in full bloom now instead of April (when it usually is).
ReplyDeleteNo winter here in South Central Florida - we usually get a few nights of freezing temperatures then warm up into the 40's or
ReplyDelete50's I don't think we had one night in the 30's. Today will be 89 and my hubby and I have already been in our pool several times. We have had to take the "blanket" off as the pool temperature was up to 96 on Saturday (yep, ninety-six)! I miss the seasons but think this is going to be the new "normal". Thanks for sharing the beautiful red bud tree!
Hugs -
Carol
My verbena is looking good too. I just bought pink verbena and put it another part of the garden. I have been making hanging baskets and cutting grass all morning. Weeds are happy here to but I do use Round up in some spots. Some I pull up-I consider it exercise.
ReplyDeleteOMG Love these pictures look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous bud tree! We have warm, but no moisture, And yes, lots of weeds! Have fun with your baby girl!
ReplyDeleteIf you think it is strange where you are, imagine how we feel here in Illinois! We are already mowing and I've been in capris and sandals for a week. It is 80 right this minute...so odd. I love it but they say the bugs are going to be really bad and who knows if we will get a late winter dose. That would be quite an adjustment after this!
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are so gorgeous. I really would love to plant some of those here.
Your verbena is just beautiful, Kim. And how lucky to have that lovely Redbud tree so nearby. New England has been crazy warm. (They said it might be 80 by the end of the week!) My myrtle is in bloom, the violets have started to send up their shoots, the Tulip trees and Witch Hazel are blooming, and the Forsythia are about to burst. Happy Spring!
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy all over, Kim. We have had 80 the last couple of days, 70 last week and the worst is the humidity came with it. It seems like everything popped overnight. Leaves are coming out on the trees and the flowering pears are in full bloom. It certainly looks beautiful but I dread what this summer is going to be like.
ReplyDeleteWe are warm here in Alabama. Our dogwoods are in full bloom and are beautiful. Not much of a winter for us, either
ReplyDeleteWow! Gorgeous flowers and so many of them.
ReplyDeleteWe are having spring like weather here in the north. It's so nice not to have snow on the ground.
Dee
We are warm here in Alabama. Our dogwoods are in full bloom and are beautiful. Not much of a winter for us, either
ReplyDeleteIt was a crazy winter here in Va. One day it would be 40 degrees and the next thirty degrees warmer. Your verbena looks wonderful. Hugs, Sherry
ReplyDeleteStopping by from the Open House Linky Party! http://queenofsavings.com
ReplyDeleteYes, we have Kim. I have never seen anything like this spring. It is beautiful but not fun if your allergy prone. Thank you for joining me at Home Sweet Home!
