It is absolutely nuts that the weather is so warm so early. We basically didn't even have a real winter here and I have heard stories like this all over. I am in the south, but we still normally have the four seasons, but not this year.
My verbena never completely went dormant this winter. It never got cold enough and now it looks like it has been given some doses of steroids. I have to keep looking at the calender to remind myself that it is only mid March.
Now only look at the pretty flowers and not my grass. I basically don't have much grass anymore. I have thousands upon thousands of weeds so I will not be showing you the yard anytime soon. It needs some major work. We have done everything we know to do to our yard to prevent weeds, but the weeds won.
See the problem is the ground never got cold enough long enough to kill some of the weeds. This is the worst our yard has been in sixteen years. See the pretty cardinals in the distance?
See the busy bee? The verbena is covered in bees all day long doing their thing.
Another problem is I can't even mow the yard to at least mow the weeds down because our mower had to go to the lawnmower doctor. Yep, I got on it to cut the yard and it would not start. Found out the starter had gone bad so it will cost us over three hundred dollars when they deliver it back to our house hopefully by the weekend.
Spring is my favorite time of year. It means new life and new growth. This bird house has been here for years and it is full of nesting material. We probably should clean it out for a new family to move in.
I took these pictures last week and now the leaves are growing so fast that everything is actually green already.
It's like one day it is all gray outside and then boom it is green.
My neighbor's red bud tree is just gorgeous this year.
I took this yesterday morning right after sun rise through my sun room window.
I am so glad they planted it a few years ago for me to enjoy this beautiful color from my sun room each year.
The pond has been coming back to life the past couple of weeks with this warm up. We have several gold fish that I haven't seen very much in the last few years and now they are nibbling on the stuff floating on the surface. I will have to see if I can get any pictures of them before they go back down in deeper water when it gets really hot.

We had a landscaper out yesterday to bid on some garden work. Our beautiful gardens are looking ragged.
On the upside, the flowering shrubs and trees are are early and gorgeous this year.
Same type of weather here. I normally start mowing in late May and our lawn already needs it. Your Verbena is just beautiful, is it a perennial in your area? I want to plant my garden but am so afraid mother nature will trick us and give us another dose of snow.

ReplyDeleteI've had many things not die back over the "winter" here & I live in northern Indiana. I don't have any shrubs or trees blooming yet, but it won't be long. I have daffodils and Hyacinth going like crazy! Weeds are too, can't keep up and the moss has decided to take over my property. Need to get some lime in here STAT!

Here in Wisconsin we will be near eighty degrees today! My school has turned on the A/C several times already. And no snow days for us either - but we are loving this! However, it has been a huge financial setback for our tourism industry. On a happy note, your yard is looking great! Jane

Yes, it is the same here. We had a couple of snow flurries this winter but it was mostly warm. Today is going to be in the high 70's. Happy First Day of Spring!

Your verbena is stunning! I'm so jealous. I wish I had that growing in my yard. Jimmy heard on the news, yesterday, that GA's pollen count is the highest it has ever been since documenting it! Wow! The nat'l news talked about the weather being so strange everywhere too. They said our weather patterns are changing and we will start to see warmer weather like this as a part of global warming.

ReplyDeleteThe weeds have one in our lawn, as well Kim. It is just awful! We are having to mow the weeds twice a week because the "lawn" looks like it hasn't been mowed 2 days later. It's really strange to have the weather be so warm and the trees aren't even green yet.

Same here,,, i walked around to the front of my house yesterday where I had a pot of flowers last year (that i left out in the "cold") and it didnt even kill them, they have already grown and bloomed. Everything is so pretty and green.

It is the same here and they say ticks are going to be really bad this year because of the weather and allergies. I will have to keep a close eye on my pups because we get a lot ticks with the woods all around us.

ReplyDeleteHappy Spring! Love your red bud tree. It's beautiful in bloom! Sadly we lost ours in the freak Oct. 29 blizzard we had in Central Mass. It would not have been flowering just yet here in NE though. We lost our autumnal cherry tree too. :( The weight of the snow on the leaves just split both trees into smithereens.... They literally exploded. I AM looking forward to replanting our backyard hopefully in April. Thankfully we have had a mild winter too. It's supposed to hit 80 degrees this week. Yikes! Have a good day!

ReplyDelete50's I don't think we had one night in the 30's. Today will be 89 and my hubby and I have already been in our pool several times. We have had to take the "blanket" off as the pool temperature was up to 96 on Saturday (yep, ninety-six)! I miss the seasons but think this is going to be the new "normal". My verbena is looking good too. I just bought pink verbena and put it another part of the garden. I have been making hanging baskets and cutting grass all morning. Weeds are happy here to but I do use Round up in some spots. Some I pull up-I consider it exercise.

ReplyDeleteIf you think it is strange where you are, imagine how we feel here in Illinois! We are already mowing and I've been in capris and sandals for a week. It is 80 right this minute...so odd. I love it but they say the bugs are going to be really bad and who knows if we will get a late winter dose. That would be quite an adjustment after this!

Your verbena is just beautiful, Kim. And how lucky to have that lovely Redbud tree so nearby. New England has been crazy warm. (They said it might be 80 by the end of the week!) My myrtle is in bloom, the violets have started to send up their shoots, the Tulip trees and Witch Hazel are blooming, and the Forsythia are about to burst. Happy Spring!
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy all over, Kim. We have had 80 the last couple of days, 70 last week and the worst is the humidity came with it. It seems like everything popped overnight. Leaves are coming out on the trees and the flowering pears are in full bloom. It certainly looks beautiful but I dread what this summer is going to be like.
